    Hi @kvartsnorsk

Welcome to the Forums of HP Support!

I know that you are looking for drivers for Windows XP, unfortunately, this laptop was not sold configured for this OS. Drivers are available for windows 7 and 8 (32 and 64 bit)

What happens if I do not see my operating system?

On the boot USB device, it is likely that your bootable usb image isn't UEFI, so you should enable legacy boot in the BIOS to allow boot off this device.

Is it possible for a start of it on the y500 with sli? How? When I turn on the laptop that I can hear the cd loading, but it still goes to windows.

    Hi September,.

Ishaan is correct since only today, I managed to get my hands on a Y500 to test. I have to admit that the Y500 is a great machine to own :-D

In any case, with regard to get this to work, you will need to go into BIOS.
To start the BIOS configuration utility:
    1 turn off the computer.
2 press the Novo button (small button with the curved arrow, located next to the receptacle) and select Configuration of the BIOS.

    > Go to the tab "BOOT".
    > Under"Boot" change into "Legacy support".
    > Press F10 and save the setting.
    > Machine will restart and boot press F12
    > When the boot menu appears, select desired boot.

Hope this helps and post your results.

  • How to boot from a USB - Portege R500 flash drive

    Hello

I have a Portege R500 running Windows XP, presented about 2 years ago and recently contracted a virus that has infected some of the startup files as the minute I connect it disconnects again, even in SafeMode! The quickest way I can think sorting is to reformat with the XP Recovery disk and reinstall windows.

Problem! The CD/DVD drive on the computer laptop stopped working earlier, tried almost everything in the thread on this site, but had no luck.

So my plan was to boot from a USB flash drive and do it this way. However in the boot parameters I only have the options of HARD drive / floppy drive / CD-ROM / LAN, none of them work. Does anyone know how to boot from USB flash drives?

Any help would be really appreciated

    Hello

As far as I know, it should be possible to boot from USB FDD

I don't know if you would be able to boot from a USB flash drive, but it of certainly worth a try m

Generally, you can try to press the F12 key when the laptop is turned on.
A start menu should appear on the screen, then you should see all bootable devices.

PS: as far as I know the USB startup was available in ToshibaHWSetup (tool of Toshiba which changes the settings of the BIOS under windows OS.) So I guess boot from USB must be possible.

    Welcome them

  • Can't boot from USB-DM1-4020sa

    Hello

I just bought a HP DM1 Netbook AMD E-450 (4020sa).  I'm just getting started get the configuration of the computer and try to run through some diagnostics to make sure that the material is good.  I have created a 16GB bootable USB key with Memtest on it, formatted FAT32.  Works quite well on my desktop.

However, for the life of me I can't figure out how to boot from USB on the netbook!  I tried to change the boot order, updated the BIOS, trying all 3 USB ports.  Nothing works!

To the first pressing ESC then F9 for the start menu gave me 2 options, one to boot from USB to boot from the hard drive.  I could not choose the USB, it was selected on the hard drive of permenantly.  Now, I don't see the option at all!

I'm considering installing Win7 x 64, Ubuntu and in future Win8... so I need to know a USB booting is possible on this netbook.

    Help, please!  Thank you!

Well, although Memtest86 + v4.20 is supposed to support AMD E-series processors, maybe this doesn't completely still.  I created a key Reader USB with the ISO of Windows 7 x 64, following the instructions of Ars Technica and has worked without any problems whatsoever.

Anyway, do not know why the Memtest86 + won't work, but eh... Well.  The laptop can boot from USB.

My desktop HP Pavilion P7-1074 4.5 years computer dropped last week. Planed to get a replacement on Black Friday or the day after Christmas. Hi @db69613,

Welcome to the HP forums! It's a great way to engage, ask questions and find resolutions by working with specialists from the community of HP. I understand that you need assistance with your desktop computer HARD drive that is connected to your laptop via the USB port. I'll be happy to help you with this.

I'm just surprised at the levels of technical knowledge and technical skills that your possession. Hats off to you for this. It was very clever of you! It has been a privilege to have shared this platform with you and work with you.

First of all, programs of a different version or windows session will not work on another computer as it was installed on the computer of origin at this time. It is an installation and application software, to the difference of the data or information that is accessible by any computer when the hard drive is connected. It is because no software installation binds the application of this specific operating system installed on this specific to the time machine.

If the computer does not and the hard drive is accessible, all the content (such as music, photos, videos, and other information are accessible), but the programs have been installed originally are not available and will not work on any other computer when it is connected to the outside.

However, if the hard drive works fine, windows is correctly installed, then the same hard disk can be installed on another PC of office and some of the programs should work ideally.

I hope this helps! Please let me know how it goes. I really hope that the issue is fixed without hassle.

To simply say thank you, please click the "Thumbs Up" button for appreciate my efforts. If it helps, please mark this as "'Solution Accepted". " If you need more assistance let me know and I will gladly do whatever I can to help.

Please take care now and have a wonderful week ahead.

  • How can I boot from USB - Portege A200

    Hello

I have a Portege A200 which is only a couple of years, but the hard drive no longer works. Initially, I thought that this was due to corrupt the boot disk record, but after trying to replace the drive hard (with two different readers), is showing a #0 IDE error when starting. So I came to the conclusion that the IDE controller chip is dead.

In order to get labour latop, I burned a cd with the ubunto ISO. It starts off ok but due have only 512 MB of RAM, the system is somewhat limited and nothing installed is lost each time that I reboot.

Now, I bought a 2 GB flash drive and installed ubuntu on it. My other problem is that there seems to be no boot from USB HDD or USB option in the bios.

The options I can think of are:
    (1) Upgade the bios so that it supports the start of memory stick (although no HARD drive so do not know how I could reflash the BIOS or if there is even an upgrade of the BIOS that would support this feature)
    (2) create a cd that starts the boot process then tells the system to continue the initialization of the USB key (this is possible and does anyone know where I might be able to get these software)
    (3) boot from CD but the use of USB to keep any recorded information / everything installs etc (I suppose that similar to option 2 except the cd would manage the entire OS and USB would just "extra" information)

If there are other options if someone may think I am happy to give them a go. Seems a shame to have to chuck to a laptop that is not particularly old, because the IDE controller chip has failed on the mobo.

I have apppriciate any help anyone can offer.
    Thank you very much
    Mark

    Hello

First I have to say that it of not possible to boot from the external USB device as USB, CD/DVD USB drive or USB HDD.
It of only possible to boot from the external USB FDD (floppy) disk

However, no opportunities for startup are clear, but I think that you misunderstood the IDE #0 error message. According to m that the IDE controller is not defective but only the new drive HARD is not compatible and not recognized by the BIOS.

There are different reasons for this problem
For the most part this error message appears if the HARD drive master/slave/c-salt settings are not correct.
Generally these settings don t need to be changed or switched on the 2.5 hard disks but some hard drives support a rider that needs to be fixed in the correct position. But I put t if your HARD drive supports this

In addition, the size of HARD drive isn't is not compatible could be the reason for these error messages!
I would recommend so finally communicating with ASP in your country to get a new, compatible HARD drive and see if the same error still occurs.

    Good luck

  • How to boot from simulated USB (flash drive) mass storage device?

I do some development work on the anaconda, the Installer used by Red Hat Enterprise Linux and reconstructions based off of him.  I'm testing support of USB flash drive facilities and would rather test my changes using image files from a USB drive physical - a bit like editing an .iso image to a CD instead of using a physical CD of closure.

I found a reference to the Framework of Linux-USB Gadget API, which looked exactly like what I was looking for.  After the reconstruction of the almond, I was able to run:

    • modprobe dummy_hcd
    • modprobe g_file_storage file = CentOS - 6.2 - i386 - netinstall.iso

After that, the office immediately get the image as if I had actually plugged a USB stick with the same content.

I am also able to connect this virtual USB device to a virtual machine, but when I start the virtual machine, it has no option to boot from the virtual USB device.

    Any ideas?

VMware Workstation does not directly support boot from USB but you can use a third-party utility called Plop Boot Manager to boot a bootable USB disk and you may be.
