How to configure HA when vCenter is running as a virtual machine in one of the army?

To install HA with VMware EVC, guests must be first maintenance mode before moving into the HA cluster. The problem is, vCenter runs as a virtual machine inside one of these hosts. If I stop vCenter downwards so that the host in maintenance mode, how do I setup with VMware EVC HA without using vCenter?

If you do not feature vMotion, right down your vCenter VM and you unsubscribe eg. ESX1 can record for example. ESX2 then turn back on. ESX1 maintenance mode and then back ESX1 on your cluster file and exit once done maintenance mode. It goes the same for ESX2 and the rest of the ESX host.

I'm more ready to go this way than before, but I'm always cautious when I consider the complexity of chess.

If host ESX running vCenter server completely failed, then, Yes, vCenter will re-start on another host.

But there are opportunities far more problems than that.  What happens if the data store becomes unavailable?  What happens if the ESX host is suspended from a problem that connects the CPU?

Be extremely careful, I can not far because virutalizing vCenter means basically that it have more complexity in the layers beneath him and therefore more opportunities for the failure of the recovery are introduced.

I know vCenter running on material means that layer may still fail, but we're watching all of our physical servers that run our ESX host.

Put a hypervisor on them prevents us from having to deal with the problems of disk/network/fiber channel / local memory.

The design of vSphere course has this as the best exercise of the profession - the reasons have already been identified. From VMware, it's a virtual vCenter server has high levels of resilience and redundancy, you can not necessarily with a physical server or having to pay a significant premium to achieve, that is to say MS clustering.

It also gives you the possibility of increasing resources - CPU and ram discs if you need to. With the help of a physical server you reaches the limits of physical capacity.

If it works as aVM you use common sense - if you have one or two hosts then risks may outway the benefits, that is a failure of a single host leaves Infrastructure depend on the remaining host. If you have 10 hosts and a resilient storage solution then why not.

There is quite a response to the host to vcenter environment - person has never shot to run on a physical server and can say the same for virtual.

    Hello

as this comment by DOC from VMWare, in the 'internal' invited you will just be able to run 32-bit clients, never a 64 bit one.

  • Move a virtual machine from one host to another without vCenter Server

    Hi all

Something's been recently who raised the question on moving a virtual machine between hosts without vCenter.  I am running vSphere manage 3 blades in a c3000.  I have a shared storage iSCSI blade which all the blades connect to.  All of my virtual machines are in the same data store on the shared storage.  I'm also under vCenter Server as a virtual machine on one of the blades.  The blade that hosts the vCenter Server VM dead recently. What I was hoping to do is use vSphere Client to connect directly to one of the other blades and hover over the vCenter Server VM to one of the blades of the good, but I can't find a way to do this.  Using the browser of data store and see all of the virtual machine on the store of data without problem, but I see no way to migrate the virtual machine without vCenter server.  In the end, the blade has only had a problem of memory I corrected and managed to raise the blade but I now think of the future.  I use only Essentials, so I don't have access to vMotion and Storage vMotion.  I know that running vCenter Server is supported by Vmware, but I wonder if it's the best practices.

    Any thoughts?

Hi, I assume that you get this error because the machine is running, try to connect directly to the host and do the same with an engine off the machine.

  • VCenter U1 patch that runs in a virtual machine.

Hello, I have recently updated my ESX infrastructure to vSphere 4.0U1. I run Server 4.0U1 with Update Manager vCenter. I'm confused as to how I can keep my current VM with patch vCenter. When I try to scan the virtual machine with the Update Manager - I get the following error:

CK-VCENTER VM is a virtual machine that has installed VMWare or VMWare vCenter Update Manager vCenter. This virtual machine will be ignored for scan or clean-up.

I know vCenter running as a virtual machine is officially supported by VMWare - so I'm confused as to how I can keep this compatible virtual machine. I have several tasks such as improving the VM hardware version 7 to 4, while keeping the of Windows OS virtual machine patched, etc. This must be a common situation for those who have a similar setup as me. Please notify.

There are no Patches VMware vCenter, just for vCenter and those are re - installs the application.  Regarding Microsoft security patches, you would have to patch as if it was physical.  We use Shavlik.  But you can use WSUS or even windows updates.

with regard to the update of the virtual hardware. Go to the ESX, the guest host is registered on, stop the VM vCenter and upgrade the equipment this way.

  • How to change the memory allocated for VCenter server, which is a virtual machine

I'm trying reclassification of 3.5 to Vsphere 4.1 and I improved VCenter first, making it a virtual machine.  However, when I created the server I did not allocate enough memory for it and I'm getting errors.  How can I allocate more memory for the virtual machine while it is stopped?  I can not allocate more memory, except if it is closed, but with it being the VCenter server if I stopped him so that I can access with the Vi client.  Is there a service console command?  I searched for a few hours and found nothing.

    Thank you!!

Discover what the vCenter ON WHAT VM ESX host is marked (e), connect directly to the ESX host and find the vCenter VM and make the change.

  • Catch22, how to change the settings for VirtualCenter, running as a virtual machine

I'm running as a virtual machine under ESX 3.5 VirtualCenter. I want to change the setting of this virtual machine, but of course, the only way to change many parameters of a virtual computer is to stop the guest OS. I just changed the type of NIC on all my virtual machines, except VirtualCenter, using this procedure:

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1007195

I want to change the adapter for VirtualCenter to improve vmxnet as well. How to work around the Catch22 needing VC running to change virtual machines but requiring judgment VC to edit it?

    Laughing out loud

Shut down the virtual computer. Open the VI Client and instead of the IP address / hostname of the VC Server enter the IP address / hostname of the ESX host. You must use an ESX account for it! If in doubt try then the VM VC is still under way.

  • VCenter Server installed as a virtual machine within a ESXi servers it manages?

Hi all.  I'm new in the world of VSphere... still in my evaluation period.

I have only a single ESXi server running at the moment but plans to add a second later for high availability, vmotion, increase general capacity, etc.  They are / will be ESXi running on the internal storage and the virtual machines running on a shared SAN.

Today, I installed VCenter Server 4 on a server at bottom of range/Office that I was carrying around running XP Pro x 64.

As I was installing I read the guide installation and to my surprise, it seems to recommend that I have installed VCenter Server 4 as a virtual machine on my ESXi host.

Now maybe I just spent too much time setting up my without new Lefthand requiring a 'witness' during the failover of one SAN to another... but I was under the impression that VCenter Server is not designed simply to host configuration, but is also designed to act as a 'witness' or to take account of quorum whenever a failure scenario occurred on one of my ESXi hosts.  I also noticed the VCenter Server features of a port "heartbeat", which I suppose one would use for the ESXi server heartbeat, but perhaps it is used for "connected mode" with other VCenter servers (I was intending to use only one since it is a small scale installation) I also felt that it would be useful enough to restore a damaged or shot ESXi host.

So my question is, if my ESXi host dies and it is where I have VCenter Server installed, then high availability will be unable to work?  I guess there are going to be other issues with me unable to access VCenter Server while I have an ESXi host shot, too, as a greater difficulty to get the ESXi up?

Maybe I'm wrong understand the purpose of the VCenter server... maybe it's not something that's necessary for HA, recovery, etc. and acts only as a configuration tool until something is wrong?  Or maybe I misunderstood the installation guide and they recommend only installing VCenter Server on an ESX box... they don't want this ESX box to be part of the group that manages the server?

Finally, if indeed they recommend I install this on a ESXi host manages... would I ideally be install this for local storage on the server (where I installed ESXi) or on the SAN (where all my other virtual machines are installed)... or is it just personal preference?

    Thank you!!

When you add hosts an active hemagglutinin vCenter cluster HA agent is installed on it.  This agent is what is actually the HA.  While necessary to add new hosts in a cluster and configure some specific parameters of vCenter vCenter's agents HA are self-sufficient and can handle HA failover so vCenter is offline.

You must install the vCenter VM on SAN storage, so that he can use the vMotion, sVmotion, DRS, HA, functions etc. that require a SAN.

  • How to move virtual machines from one host to another without full VI and vMotion?

    Hello

could you help me with a question?

I have two installed hosts with ESXi 3.5 U5, which are connected to the shared iSCSI (Openfiler) - VMs storage are installed on the storage disk. My requirement is to have a cheap solution of DR - in case of failure of a host, I need to move and start VM on the host of work. How to achieve without going through VMware Infrastructure 3.5 and vMotion?

    I found this article:

    http://www.virtualizetips.com/2010/04/how-to-move-a-VM-without-vCenter-or-storage-VMotion/

but RCLI needs Infrastructure of VMware ESXi does not have default CLI So, how to move VMs between hosts (of course I mean "cold" move) without byuing any additonal VMware SW? It is generally possible in my situation?

    Thank you.

If the virtual machines are running in shared storage (two guests see the same storage iSCSI or NFS) then it's simple. If a host goes down, then look for the data store on the ESXi host work. Navigate through folders for each virtual machine, right-click on the VMX file and add to the inventory. You will then be able to turn on the virtual machine.

To move a virtual machine from one host to another, as long as both hosts had the same processors, you can pause the VM on the single host, browse and add the virtual machine to the inventory on the second break host and the United Nations.

If the virtual machines are on local storage, but the two hosts are connected to the same shared storage, clone virtual machines on a daily basis from local storage to shared storage. Use something like ghettoVCB http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-8760 make the clone. In the case of a server failure, you will be able to browse the data store, add to the inventory on the shared storage and switch the cloned machine.

  • The host CPU is not able to run 64-bit virtual machines

I am running VMWare Server Console on a Windows 2003 64 bit OS 1.0.3 and prepare to create a 64-bit VM server to test a new application on.  This forum server works on is a SuperMicro SuperServer 6025 B - TR +.  I entered the bios and activated the virtual bios in the CPU settings.  However, when I start my VM, I get the following error:

«You have configured the virtual machine as an operationg system 64-bit client.»  However, this host processor is not able to run 64-bit virtual machines or this virtual machine has 64-bit support disabled.

I looked online and saw some references to allow an EM64T which was to be activated but I do not see this option in my BIOS.  Someone at - it any other suggestions as to what I have to do to get the virtual machine to use the 64-bit compatibility.

Unfortunately, the 1.x server logs are a little sparse in this regard.  However, it seems that you have mixed steppings of physical processors.  In this range of models, Intel changed the VMCS review between the Bx steppings and Gx steppings ID, making it incompatible for the execution of VT - x.  Realizing their mistake, Intel has provided to OEMS for a microcode patch that makes the revision ID the Gx stepping VMCS matches that of the Bx stepping.  OEMs distribute this patch of microcode as a BIOS update.

In short, an update of the BIOS of your system provider should solve the problem.

  • Sorry this application cannot run under a Virtual Machine

How can I solve this problem. I can not choose the option of Windows 8 and activate the button of Hyper-v. I try to get a game running on windows 7.

Sure, I can. All first, open the settings of Bitdefender, antivirus and silence him Active Virus Control. After that, I was able to play games like Dead space 3, Kane and lynch etc. That is the question on Windows 7 for the warning to error: Sorry, this application cannot run under a Virtual Machine.

  • I'm not sure how to make it work. 2 guests, 2 virtual machines, trying to keep the traffic on the Server Blade.

I have two blades on the same chassis running ESXi 4.1, each has an Exchange Server on it. Im trying to keep the traffic between the two Exchange boxes contained between the two. I thought that I could put in the same vSwtich, but looks like I need vDS for this. I don't have this license level.

Now, I found myself with two separate vSwitches with the same label. network, it shows them on the same vSwitch so they don't transmit traffic. because they are separate switches... my vSphere networking missing a bit... need to study more.

Since you have virtual machines on different blades that the traffic between the two will have to cross a physical network card.   If you need to segment this traffic, you can configure a VLAN in your network, add a new group of port on each host to ESXi virtual machine and then set up a NIC in the virtual machines to use this group of VIRTUAL LAN port.

Though the virtual machines on the same host (always) you can configure a single vSwitch.   In this case the traffic between virtual machines would not hit the physical network and you wouldn't need even a physical NETWORK adapter, attached to the vSwitch.

  • How to use an iso of media store in a virtual machine?

I know this is a stupid question, but I can't understand how to use an iso of media store in a virtual machine in a laboratory Manager configuration. I copied on an ISO in my store of media NFS and its all synced to the top and available to use. But what I want to know is, is there a way we can map the iso in a virtual machine in the config of lab manager and make it look like cd?

    Pls advice.

    just a couple first checks:

    1. the ISO standard appear in the media section of the organization who needs to use it.

    2. the NFS store is accessible by all esx hosts used in this organization

    3. go to the page of the console for the virtual machine that needs to use it.

4 right-click the VM name to get the full menu

    5. Insert the CD

    6. choose the ISO from the menu drop down.

All this is in the user manual.

  • How can I make a copy/clone of an existing virtual machine?

I have VM Fusion 2.0.2 running on my MacBook.  I have several virtual machines running, and I would like to copy them and use it as a starting point for a new virtual machine.  I know how to take a control point, but what I want to do is to create a single independent computer separate from an existing machine.  is this possible?

I have VM workstation 6 running on a PC and I know I can do it by cloning the virtual machine, I just want to make something similar.

    Licensing issues aside...

With Virtual Machine to stop target, not suspended...

CTRL-click on the entry of the Virtual Machine in the Virtual Library Target Machine and select Show in Finder and closing of the merger.

CTRL-click on the target Virtual Machine in the Finder package and select duplicate and it will create a copy of the virtual computer target package in the naming convention of "copy" and you can rename the Package by selecting and pressing ENTER.

Open Fusion and drag and drop the Virtual Machine copied/renamed on the Virtual Machine library package to how you can change the display name of the Virtual Machine library.

The first time you start the virtual machine copied/renamed be sure to select "I copied it".

Note: If you are using Windows then you will need to run NewSid to change the name of the computers and the security identifier.  Also if Windows and not a VLK version, you need to activate Windows again.
