  If you have a lot of disk space on the ESX Server, yes creating and adding a new virtual disk (vmdk) to the VM Studio is the way to go. Mount the new drive for the Studio colleagues OS (Ubuntu), and the key is/opt/vmware/www/build simple installation on the new disk to create the new space drive for Studio use. In my case, I found that my problem was caused by the stripping of command/opt/vmware/share/build/datastore on the "------" to my domain\userid. I could see what happens when I ran the/opt/vmware/share/build/datastore command with the option - debug. After figure this out, I removed the prefix field of my build settings tab in the profile of my Studio and worked to build.

  As the error that you are experiencing is simply due to the fact that recovery disks will not properly install on a disk smaller than that they were created on, I just burn the ISO correct on a blank DVD and use it to run the installation - there is no need to create a bootable USB key, unless you have a problem with the optical drive of your laptop.
