Help, please. trying to open windows Defender, but nothing works. also, what is the best way to get rid of trojans and other horrible virus. I'm learning the basics of computers so I would appreciate comments that includes technical jargon.

Thank you

I'll make this real short (for some it could be true long)...

Question #1:
Did you receive a warning message that your Windows Defender does NOT work?
If the answer is Yes, thanks for posting this message, Word by Word. Then go to Question #2.

Question #2:
You have an antivirus (AV) programs installed?
Norton
McAfee
AVG
Microsoft Security Essentials
If the answer is Yes, then you do NOT have a problem. The AVs have their own advocates, so they close Windows Defender. Raison d'etre: have 2 defenders at the same time will create conflicts.

If you have NOT the above installed AV, then here's a way to re - turn on Windows Defender...

Start button > in the search box, type Services > press the Enter key > scroll to find Windows Defender, click on it >...
topic status , it must be said... Has begun
under Startup Type, it must be said... Automatic
If it does not say that, right click on Windows Defender > click Properties > in the new window, make the necessary changes, as above > click OK when finished.

For the benefits of others looking for answers, please mark as answer suggestion if it solves your problem.

  • How to remove Windows Defender from Vista?

Anyone know how to remove Windows Defender? It is not on the list of programs that can be uninstalled. When I try to remove it from the tree, I get a message that only a "TrustedInstaller" can remove it.

It's been nothing but trouble I got my new PC in August. I spent in Avast and MalwareBytes, but I can't stop the system to get scans in tenacious Defender. I wanted to get rid of it because it will not update install. It keeps telling me that there are updates available, but the progress bar comes in with a small piece of the execution and the stalls.

Updates Windows continues to tell me it is another Defender update available and also stops at install.

Looks like Microsoft could do a better job of coordinating its products. I'm ready to throw the new computer and become a ludites.

    Help!

I uninstall Norton before that I installed Avast. I went to 'Services' and 'arrested' Defender. Then I went to 'Properties' and 'Disabled' Defender. This should at least stop notifications. You can't repeat to you, I got it.

Microsoft Security Essentials already have Windows Defender inside and you are protected and you MUST NOT run Windows Defender when you have Microsoft Security Essentials.

If you have the following AV, antivirus, programs installed, close your Windows Defender. Purpose of these AVs have their own advocates. 2 defenders on the same machine will create conflicts.
Bottom line: it's ok. It's normal.
List of AVs which will stop Windows Defender:
    Norton
    McAfee
    AVG
    Microsoft Security Essentials

If you don't have AV programs above, here's how to restart Windows Defender:

Start button > in the search box, type Services > press the Enter key > scroll to find Windows Defender, click on it >...
topic status , it must be said... Has begun
under Startup Type, it must be said... Automatic
If it does not say that, right click on Windows Defender > click Properties >
in Startup Type, click on the pointer to the right and select automatic
to the service status, click Start
    Click OK when finished.

You are running Microsoft Security Essentials, AVG, Norton or McAfee? If you run one of those, she didn't have Defender. It's good, not bad. Not only is there potential conflict, but there is no reason to have both; basically to have something very similar to the built-in Defender, and both running at a time will be your performance level and create the risk of problems that are contrary to the other.

  • Publish with windows defender - error code 800106ba when I try to open Windows Defender

I use windows vista sp2 32 bit op system.
Windows Defender is set to automatic. but when I try to open windows defender, I get an error code 800106ba
Please notify hw to enable this feature for protection.

If you use another program (other than MSE) AV, Windows Defender may also be disabled. Examples of these other programs include but are not necessarily limited to: AVG, Kaspersky, Norton, McAfee, and Trend Micro.

    Hi the ball

Kaspersky does not automatically turn off Windows Defender. However, it is recommended that, as usual, Windows Defender real-time protection is not enabled when Kaspersky is installed. Its a similar situation with Windows and Kaspersky firewall products that have built in firewall.

I used Kaspersky products for several years and it has always been the case in my experience. I just tested with Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 race and I was luckily allowed to activate the protection in real time of the defenders of Windows and the Windows Firewall.

    I hope this helps.  :)

When I try to open Windows Defender it says it's off, and when I click on "Activate and open" it just does not respond. Any ideas?

If you have one of the following antivirus installed programs, then what is happening is normal.

    MSE - Microsoft Security Essentials
    AVG
    McAfee
    Norton

Anti-virus programs have their own advocates, with 2 defenders running in the same will to computer to create conflicts. Therefore, they will stop Windows Defender.
There is nothing to worry about.

If you don't have one of those installed, then here is a way to reactivate it:

Start button > in the search box, typeServices > press the Enter key > scroll to find Windows Defender, click on it >...

If it does not say that, right click on Windows Defender > click Properties >

You have the MSE, Microsoft Security Essentials, AVG, Norton or McAfee installed?
If so, these programs are supposed to close Windows Defender.
This is because they have their own advocates. 2 defenders running on the same computer is redundanr as well as to create conflicts.
In short, if you have one of the above, you don't need Windows Defender.

Is there another reason you want to open Windows Defender?
