  Thank you all for your advice. The key to solving this problem is

  (1) define a name for the VC created by programming:

  ViewCriteria vc = createViewCriteria();

  vc.setName ("myCustomVC");

  (2) apply to adding 'real' as second parameter, otherwise previous VC added at design time will be lost:

  applyViewCriteria (vc, true);

  (3) after that, the Victoria Cross can be removed with:

  Boolean result = removeApplyViewCriteriaName ("myCustomVC");

  For some strange reason, Acrobat Standard does not allow you to edit JavaScripts at the level of the document, use a different approach.
