  It depends on if you have encryption enabled or not.  If you have the encryption on, then you will need a copy of your encryption key or the files will be locked forever.

I was able to move the correct files on the drive, but now I want to move photos and videos to my Macbook, but it won't allow me. It shows a circle of gray with a line through it, when I try to drag the file on the disk. Photos and videos are in the documents in the finder not in the photo library, I don't know if that makes a difference.

  Apparently, my hard drive failed on my HP.  I'm running Windows XP with the latest service pack.
  I get a black screen that says "disk error, press ctrl + atl + del to restart".
  Given that it is a 7 year old computer, I don't see the need to put a lot of effort in intensive care there.
