How to quit hanging out at Cavas in Photoshop

There are times when I have an image open in Photoshop CS 5.5 which is going to be tabbed, which means it takes up the canvas of the entire program. If I then try to drag and drop an image on the desktop in Photoshop to work on it (unrelated to the first), it will not open as a new element with tabs but rather, drag it in the canvas of the existing image as a new layer. It happened not in Photoshop CS4 (meaning that it would create two tabs points in the program independent of the other). Is there a way to stop the Photoshop to do this? I don't want to disable tabs, I like and I don't want to drag my current image down out of his canvas in a floating tab first either.

Any thoughts? Thank you!

one way:

Drag the file tab

Right-click on the file and select: Open with: photoshop
