How to re - enable automatic updates as an administrator?

On my machine, I have 3 users and I am the only administrator. I noticed last night that I didn't check for updates since March 1, 2010, and that automatic Upadtes is "disabled by the administrator.

Okay, all right. However, I'm unable to change the settings. The drop-down list to select the behavior of AU is grayed out & set to off. I checked the service and is has been started and set to automatic (delayed start).

Is there a registry entry, I'm missing? I didn't create a strategy group (AFAIK), but also do not know how to get that in Win 7 to check.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for responding.

I run AVG Free and he is current. It was a clean install - not an upgrade of the operating system preinstalled. Never had Norton or McAfee - too heavy on resources.

However, I found the source of the problem. My manufacturer had installed a kind of active management software that 'managed' my updates. I removed that and was able to change the setting again.

    Hello

change how to get updates to allow you to choose what you and when you install to stop it happening again

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial140.html

Download updates but let me choose whether to install them - if you select this option, Windows will download the updates on your computer, but not install them automatically. If you want to install updates, then you must install them manually. You should only select this option if you have a reason to not install updates automatically. Only advanced users should use this option.

Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them - if you select this option, you'll be alerted when there are new updates available for download and install. You can then choose to download and install the updates that you want. This option should really be reserved for people who know exactly which updates they need, or those who have little access to the Internet.

If you select the download updates but let me choose... option, no update will install without your approval. Suppose an update will require a reboot and does not approve the installation of an update until & unless you are ready to restart.

You can change the setting "notify only". Once you have done this, you will need to approve the updates are downloaded updates are installed commandeLorsque, which they are installed.

    I prefer "Notify only" setting.

What are the differences between Windows updates and automatic updates from Microsoft Updates?

While Windows Update provides updates specifically for Windows, Microsoft Update expands the service to download and install updates for other Microsoft software, such as Microsoft Office and Windows Live [as well as Silverlight & Microsoft Security Essentials]. Update automatic is a feature that allows you to configure your PC to automatically download and install updates using each service, making it easy and convenient for you to keep your current Windows PC.

If you disable Microsoft Update, your default update source is "reversed" update of Windows, but it does NOT neutralize automatic updates.

Windows Update no longer works unless you have at least XP Service Pack 3.

Right-click on 'My Computer' and then select 'Properties' to determine your level of service current pack.  If you are in SP1A or SP2, you can go directly to SP3.  If you do not have the service pack or have SP1, then you must install SP2 and SP3.  You can download a stand-alone Setup for SP2 and SP3 on the following links.  Ignore the verbage on 'professionals only '.  I you hereby dub a professional...

  • Please help - Virus? Can not enable automatic updates and blue screens during the virus scan

Hi, I think I might have a virus.  Here are the symptoms:

    • I can't activate the automatic updates
    • MS Security Essentials blue-screens in an analysis complete (I can do a quick scan)
    • I was able to run a quick scan of the Scanner for MS without problem.
    • When you open Internet Explorer I always get "stopped unexpectedly" and it gives me a choice to go to the previous page or home page
    • I have AVG Antivirus but it was blue-screening during a scan, so I uninstalled and installed MS Security Essentials
    • I ran a chkdsk /r and no errors not found on my hard drive

I searched the internet and I tried a few suggestions, but so far I have not made progress.

I am running XP SP3 and I don't remember disabling the automatic updates.

I am open to any suggestions, just some guidelines at this stage.

  • How to stop the automatic update to 8.0 (1?)

    Related to: installation of updates

For awhile, I had received alerts asking when I tried installing 8.0 (or 8.1... I don't remember).  A drop down menu allowed me to select "Remind Me later".  It has happened from time to time, but was simply a minor inconvenience.  HOWEVER, recently these alerts is no longer offer me the option "Remind Me later".  My choices are 'Now,' 'One hour', 'Two Hours', etc.   The first time it appeared, I was intrigued by the absence of the previous option, but could not get control of my computer back until I got something.  So, I took 4 hours, expecting to be invited again.  Stupid thing embarks on an update in 4 hours while I was working.  I couldn't stop, so I stop it manually to my computer.  He then had to go a process to restore my previous version.

How can I stop these propagandist automated facilities?  Not to be dramatic, but it feels a bit like my computer has a stalker!  It happened twice this morning, and I can just turn off my computer manually to stop the "recovery."  It's not ideal.

I don't want window 8 (8.1?).  I've heard horrible things can happen.  I'm not a programmer, nor a hardware expert, so this is beyond my knowledge.  Anyone know how I can turn off, turn off, whatever, the automatic update unwelcome and unwanted?  Help me please!   «.. . for Dummies"level instructions please.  :-D

  • How to re-enable the updater?

When I bought suite Production CS5 I had an internet connection very poor and unreliable, so I disabled the update as he was demanding always updates. Now I'm back to civilization, but can not find the place where or how reactivate the automatic updates for my Adobe products. Can someone help me?

    Thank you.

BTW: I could not connect you to the forums using Firefox!

Since how long have you installed all the stuff Adobe?  I ask, because I wondered if maybe Windows 7 system restore facilities can help you.

I wonder if trying to uninstall the software from another account from which you used to install might have gotten you troubles here.

Something to try: temporarily disable UAC Windows (drag his control all the way to bottom and then restart), and then log on to the account that you used to install and try the uninstall it.
