  If you used the mail IMAP service provider then they should always be on the server. Add your account info to your new installation of Thunderbird and verify the server.

  If you used the e-mail POP then messages were on your computer and are in the center of recycling with your old computer.

  Please do not use e-mail in storage long term of what you are looking. As you can see it does not work so well. At least make backups of your email.

  Have you tried to use the import mail option? Choose you the first alternative for Apple Mail account, and then locate the folder that contains your old data of POP e-mail, search, and select the mailboxes folder that contains what to restore and click the Open/Select button. Data are restored in an import file in the Mail folder list in the sidebar.

  The option "send to > Email recipient" won't work without an e-mail program based on the desktop.  The Surface RT has not one by default, but this October the 8.1 update will include Outlook and this ability will be possible.

  You can have it now, if you're uncomfortable to test a preview version of 8.1, but remember it of a beta and has known and unknown problems: install only if you are ready to deal with these issues in a trial version of 8.1.  Otherwise, wait until October when you can have the final version.

  If you have an IMAP email account you simply re-create the IMAP account as e-mail messages are stored on the server and IMAP e-mail accounts have a remote view directories on the server.

  If you had a Pop e-mail account, e-mail messages are download from the server Inbox for the email account Thunderbird Inbox. By default, they download, and then delete the copy on the server. So now the only copy in your computer. You can set it up so that emails are not deleted from the server. Tools > account settings > server settings for pop mail account Select "Leave messages on the server" click OK
