How to resize text vs reflow in a text box?

Hello

Two of us at work are using Illustrator CS3. On my computer I can resize text boxes easily and the text redéroule to adapt. On the computer of my colleague, however, drag on the text box control points distorts the text and it is not redistributed. If it resets the character 100% width the can just go back to its original size.

Any ideas on why this is happening and how to fix it?

Thank you

Graham,

If you in the same way (right), your colleague may have corrupted preferences.

Closing and pressing Ctrl + Alt + Shift / Cmd + Option + shift at startup can solve it.

A further reset is, move the folder

If no help, there may be interference from other applications, see in particular point 7 in other options

  • Overview of the disabled scale/resize text box

Usually, when I scale or resize a text box, it will turn into direct, giving me a glimpse of what the text will look like if I let go of the mouse, now if I resized a text box that is exactly the same until I let go of the mouse, how it move to its new position. It is very difficult to explain, and I can't really give an example image. I'm sure it's a very simple solution, I think I just need to check a box somewhere.

  • Help on resizing text boxes and the General image techniques

    Using CS2.

I have two fundamental questions.  We have to do to get the best images to vector (with text) that I can for placement in InDesign documents.  The other relates to the specificity of work with text in FW boxes.

The easiest way for me to produce vector images has been using PowerPoint.  I do all the graphic work, and then save it as a gif file.  I don't and then cropping in a graphic (Irfanview, PS) tool insert or place the image.  As long as there is no resizing, things work fine.  I do not know how things like IPR are controlled using this technique but I'm assuming that would be also with the graphical tool.  I know that Irfanview allows the CIO to clarify when resizing.

The problem starts to appear when the gif object is resized.  Things are distorted and I lose the freshness of the image content.  I'm certainly not an expert on the graphics but I thought either, there is no resizing (just a cropping) or 2) to work in a tool such as FW where (I guess) so I need to make 1) actual size charts PP size of the final image placed there are better abilities to resize the vector images.  My feeling (again, not an expert) is that converts the process I use for vector graphics in PP to a bitmap image in the gif and resizing does not work as well for bitmap images with respect to vector objects.  Don't I have that right?

    Go to question 2:

Can the text boxes be resized in FW without distorting the text?  Their size is visible when initially drasing them?  Maybe spoiled by PowerPoint, I like to define the width of the vector objects (e.g. rectangle) and the width of the text it will fill at the same size.  (I know that PP has the opportunity to put borders on text boxes, but when you work in FW I need to work with 2 objects, the rectangle and the text box).  I have a wide 81px rectangle.  Can I set a text box to 81px wide without distorting the text?

I tend to want to control the dimensions of the real object so I can get good spacial alignment.  For example, I tend to set the width of a text to an odd number of px object so that any line that comes out of the text object coincide well with the text.  I must admit that it was perhaps time for me to use a different technique in FW (for example an alignment more than objects multiple vs knowing dimensions and locations seting).  My approach does need improvement?

    Thanks for the tips

    Tom

As I wean out of PP I started watching FW and Illustrator (I have both).  I did a logo or two in FW and have used it to build simple web graphics (e.g. buttons, menus).  It can, I believe, be a little more complicated than what I need in this case.

Given that the PP is not a graphics program, its drawing capabilities are very limited. As a result, all graphics applications will have many more features that you are used to see and more that you need for a project.

I did a little experiment with Illustrator and my first impression is that it will work better for me for this job.  It seems a little more intuitive.

Is a general rule to use FW for graphics for the web and Illustrator of what I was doing in PP?

Your suggested orientation is good. Also note that if you make a logo or a vector graphic in Illustrator (saved as .ai format), you can import into Fireworks and work with it as a vector object it. FW can import and use, simply create no, files and .ai objects.

FW has some vector tools, they are hidden under window > others > Path. Because the FW is intended to produce Web graphics, it is a hybrid, capable of vector and image/photo editing application. Given that she has some of both, it is not necessarily what is Illustrator, nor all that Photoshop has. It has most of the features of the two programs, as long as the feature is useful for a Web graphics designer. For pure photo retouching Photoshop has the edge; for pure illustration, Illustrator has the edge. Both Photoshop and Illustrator supports profiles of colors and other important features for printing which is not the fireworks. All are good programs, but there are reasons to prefer one over the other according to the type of graphics, you need to create or work with and what is your intended use of the work. (But none of them will be greater than PowerPoint!)

I'm not sure I can unravel the mystery with the resizing of text box.  I suspect theres an option is selected.  Knowing that it's possible, it's enough for me to do some homework.

Maybe... don't think that text boxes at all. You have text objects. The object has a bounding box which is determined by the underlying definition of the police, but he is not in an text box. (Sometimes swooshs goes beyond area of definition of a character in the police, but that's another question). The bounding box of the text object is similar to the of a circle or a star or an irregular shape bounding box. There is a reference to the dimensions box, but the text is not inside some other independent container.

To resize it, select the text object and change the font size using the Properties palette or using the tool of the ladder hanging out on a corner of the hierarchy (different from the bounding box, and I don't know why, sorry).

I think that with Illustrator, you can set text (or other) boxes and fill them with text. * Research * Oh... Like these: http://school.tatoland.com/illustrator/aitype.html

  • How to connect text boxes?

    Hello

First of all: I do not want to link the text boxes, I looked at that, it is not what I'm looking for.

I create a small book containing stories of people. I do not know how what font or size which I use, and I don't know where I want to place all the images in the text. To do this, I want that every story in a different text box. This way, if I change the position of a photo in another story, he is not redistributing the text in all the other stories. However, I want the text boxes must be carefully aligned under eachother. However, if, say, change the fontsize of a paragraph text box, that text box must increase volume. Well well, which is easy to do. However, the area of text below that now needs to be moved. Very good, easy to do. However, all the text boxes below 50 also now need to travel! For every change I make that changes the size of a text area, I need to move all 50...

Is there a way to make the beginning of a text box is the end of the previous text box, even if I move the previous text box?

Or y at - it another way to easily do what I want without problem 50-page-text-reinvest?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

    Ok thank you.

I think I found a way that works for me. I can do a block of text that spans 50 pages (or else I might need) and fill it with text and images that I want to insert specific points in the anchor text. In this way, if I ever change anything, at least the images remain in their appropriate place. It will just be a huge text block.

I think you misunderstand the concept of threaded images. You can't have a single image that spans 50 pages - a framework cannot be in both series only once - but you can have a thread containing 50 frameworks related, and this is the right way to address your problem. Anchoing images on specific points in the text is the standard method to ensure that they stay with the paragraphs appropriate when the text redéroule when editing.

You should be aware that dress works a little differently with anchored objects. Film applied to an object that is inline will affect only the text after the inserted object. Film applied to an object that is anchored with a position of "Custom" affects only the text in the lines that follow the line containing the anchor point. In other words, it is sometimes necessary to anchor an image in a previous paragraph or a paragraph empty to keep the anchor. If the latter, you can set line spacing to 0 so it does not occupy any space on the page (it does not at the top of a column, however).

I created interactive PDFs with many boxes and in the box 'address', I want it to be on two lines in case of long text. When I turn 2 text frames related in boxes of interactive text, they became distinct. But I need the text is flowed by one box to another when the person is completing the form. Help, please!

To bind form fields text is flowed from one field to another you will need to do in Acrobat with javascript, here is a link that describes the procedure. There is no way to do this directly in Indesign.

    OK - on this page-

Notice how the background text box grows vertically when you increase the text size in the browser.  In case you are interested in this technique, Google "sliding doors".

Why is it better?  It is best, because if you use positioning to place the content, you can not use any method to adjust the height of this text box, because positioned elements are removed from the normal flow and can not interact with container elements such as they resize it.  I floated the adjacent divs in position instead, giving me the flexibility of these other methods to stabilize the layout.

As a designer who wants to work on the web, you have to put the idea of positioning pixelated.  The web is not print.

  • Synchronization of several text boxes in a single Indesign file

In theory, this problem seems simple enough and there should be a simple way to accomplish my task, but every search I tried to sync text explains only how to thread text boxes.

What I do is a model that is 4UP on the presentation page. Currently, whenever I make changes to my text, I copy several times change to reflect the change of each instance of my layout on the page.

I want to do is to synchronize all my text boxes so that changes or updates will be automatically reflected in every instance of the layout. In the past I've accomplished this in Illustrator using symbols and instances of that symbol, but I still have to find a way simlar in Indesign.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Zach Barner

    Hi, Zach:

Thanks for the comments. You should not repeat or update several references changed in a document individually.

I did a test on my suggestion, because x - Ref are not supposed to break completely when the context of the source is changed. I saw that I didn't warn you about deleting the cross-reference marker (AKA 'Anchor Text'); When you create a cross-reference to the material of origin, in the same or different documents, InDesign inserts a marker for reference at the beginning of the source paragraph. If it is not visible, select Type > show hidden characters. It looks like a colon (:)) in the indicator of the layer color.

NOTE: InDesign uses the term 'Destination' to describe subsection which shoots a reference in the position of the cursor when you insert a cross-reference, and he uses the term 'Source' to describe the paragraph from destination that is displayed at the location where the cross-reference is being inserted. This usage derives from terms used for InDesign hyperlinks, where it's raining logical. Depending on your experience pre-InDesign with references in longhand, typewritten, or other applications on the computer, you can find, as I do, contrary to intuition. I think of 'source', as what you shoot in 'destination', as the place where you view what is pulled and "reference" the thing that is pulled in. I also use the term "source document" to describe the document that contains the source of the reference, and I use the term 'document container"to describe the document that contains the reference (the stuff that are fired).

Thus, when you change the material source of a cross reference in the source document, if you take care of not to delete the cross-reference markers/text anchors created at the beginning of the paragraphs of source, the reference in links hyperlinks/cross-references Panel of the document container to display a triangle of yellow warning for each source of change and you can update in a single action.

Updating changed references may also be confusing: If no modified references (yellow triangle) are selected in the hyperlinks / Panel cross references are selected (highlighted), you use the update references at the bottom of the hyperlinks button / references Panel, or update hyperlinks reference point / wheel of the panel menu references , EVERYTHING changed references are updated. However, if one or more references in the Panel are selected, the update button or menu item updates only the selected references.

See if this helps you simplify your operations.

    Kind regards

  • Smart txt reflow - how do you work with several text boxes?

    Hello

I create ID cards to work, for 650 employees. I had used the reflow of text before smart on other jobs and I don't foresee any problems with its use for this project. To explain my problem:

I'm doing a template with a trial of ten employees file. The design on each card, it is a name and a unique ID to be used. The name is 18pt and code 10pt.

On my main page, I have a block of text for the name and a text block for the employee ID. The text blocks are as wide as the work plan but only high enough to adapt to a single name by image to the relevant point size.

On the first page of my document, I select 'place' and then select the text file with all the names, I get the change of cursor in the image of the text, I hold SHIFT for the debit option and click on my name text box. InDesign automatically creates 9 new pages, and I now have a 10 page document. So far, perfect.

I select "place" again, choose the employee code text file, click on my block of text in code used on the first page, and repeat the same process as above.

My problem starts - I want codes for the employee to just flow through ten pages, as the names, but when I place the codes file and select the text on the first page, inDesign creates 10 new pages after the tenth page. So I find myself with 20 pages - the first ten pages with names and nothing in the code text boxes and the last ten pages with the codes but nothing in the name text boxes.

I am at a loss as to why he does this. I was playing with the settings in the preferences, but nothing changes. I tried to select both the two text files and import at the same time.

How do you work with several text boxes and several import of text file on a doicument? There are no extra spaces or something like that in my text files.

I really don't want to have to link all text blocks - that will forever, but right now it's the only way I can get it to do what I want.

Also, is there anyway to specify the font and the size of the text is important as? Because it keeps import as minion pro, even if the text boxes on the master are set to the correct font and size. Not a big deal though.

Help, please! Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance!

Ah, I think I misunderstood your original post and thought you wanted to do 10 badges per page. If it's only one, you need only a set of images. Same procedure for setting in place, but you have no need to screw anything or use the step and repaet to make copies.

Place the file name in the frames of name and ID will add pages and then return to the first page and place the numbers. Just don't forget to put the bad slider in the space where the framework and to stay away from the guides (if you click on a guide, ID will ignore masters executives) and hold down the SHIFT key when you click.
