  It is a problem due to the fact that AOE 2 was built on the platform Windows 95/98 Win9x. It will expose a few graphical artifacts while playing. You can try setting compatibility Win98 or Win95 check. There is also a workaround that may work in my opinion. I've recently been playing with full screen exclusive and JInternalFrames mode. What IV ' e noticed is now on all platforms I have tried works very well. By clicking and dragging the JInternalFrame to a new location, it's fast and responsive. However when you do this operation even under Windows 7 the JInternalFrame lags significantly behind the location of the mouse I'm dragging the inner frame. I did have the chance to test this on all other Windows such as Vista or XP platform, but I don't think that happens on these platforms, at least I don't remember that ever happens when I had Windows Vista and it does not occur in Mac OS 10.6.
