  A pretty easy regedit should remove an application from the section "recommended programs". Here is a procedure step by step on how to do it. Unfortunately, I don't think that will solve your problem. What seems actually to have occurred is either your .lnk .exe (or maybe both) have inadvertently been associated with WMC. Out of the list of the programs recommended for the open with dialog box will not change. In fact, the next time that you open the program, it will open in WMC and add automatically return a program recommended in the open with dialog box.

  There really should not be whatever it is that you open a .lnk or .exe with because you really don't want to open them... you want to run. To determine if the .lnk or .exe associated with wrong, you can either watch the extension file associations in the control panel > programs, or you can see if it's a shortcut or the actual executable file that does.
