  I used my HP mini 5101 (Windows XP Home Edition 2002, 1.66 GHz, 0.99 GB of ram) Fortunately for 13 months, and this worked without a Nick. Yet, in the last days he suddenly started to freeze completely unannounced and apparently more frequently. I can't make any specific action that leads to the gel. It happens when I have it on the desk, on my knees, while the screen saver is activated, as I write, when I pull the internet cable etc. The screen freezes completely.   As you mentioned a few times that happens when you move, I was wondering if HP 3D Driveguard may be responsible because there meant to park the heads of the hard drive in case the machine broke etc.  Maybe it's parking the drive heads in response to even the smallest movement for some reason any.

  You can start safe mode?  When you turn on you should be able to press the F8 key about once per second, until you get the advanced boot menu and select Mode without failure.  If you do this, you can select the system restore to get back before the beginning of the problem.  System Restore is under start-> all programs-> Accessories-> system tools.  Click on the box that says «Show restore points more»

  When you say that your laptop is not a hard disk, which it start from?  An SSD, a flash drive?  You neglected to mention that relevant detail.
