  You don't mention if your computer comes with Win 8 is installed.  If it was the case the product key is integrated into the BIOS.  There is no way to recover it without third party software.

  I'm sorry to know that you are facing problems with activation.   Hello

  The product key of Windows 8 (I guess it was the operating system that came with your laptop) is integrated into the chip of your system BIOS. Even if the hard drive is replaced, the product key remains intact in the motherboard BIOS chip.

  So, when you put the new hard drive & try to recover the Windows 8 operating system in your new drive, the OS will automatically activate of the product key in the BIOS chip. You don't have to do it manually.

  But, in case you got a message to activate Windows 8, you will need to contact HP or Microsoft technical support in your region.

  This problem can also occur if the Windows activation file is corrupted. I suggest you phone activation.

  1. press Windows + X key then click Run, and then type: slui.exe 4
  2. then press the ENTER"" key.
  3. Select your "country" in the list.
  4. choose the option "activate phone":

  5. stay on the phone (do not select/press all options) and wait for a person to help you with the activation.

  NOTE:  if your system came with Windows preinstalled 8 then you need to install Windows 8 of disc/partition recovery and then upgrade to Windows 8.1.

  Looks like a bad HDD. Your product key of WIn7 which carried out the sticker on the underside of your laptop. You must get the HP HP recovery or 3rd party disc to restore your system to the rear. And there's a good chance your HARD drive is bad and must be replaced.

  Thanks for your replies. My reason for decommissioning is a requirement with my Autocad Architecture 2012 which does not work on windows 8.1. Stupid me! I should have looked into this before buying the computer. But I like the computer because it is a 64 bit with 8 GB of memory and I love the W8.1 too.   If you reinstall the operating system or restore factory initially provided for the computer disks or if you use on the computer factory restore partition you need not the key product on the sticker of the computer (COA SLP below.)  That is only used when you upgrade the bios of the computer, or another problem it happens that the installer cannot self turn on the computer.

  The following text was published previously in another forum by Darin Smith MS (MSFT) and can probably answer better I could question:

  "Computers, which are built by the large manufacturers come with Windows pre-installed, come with 2 two product keys:

  (A) OEM SLP: this key comes pre-installed in Windows, when it comes to the factory. This key is designed to work with Bios OEM flag only on the hardware of this manufacturer. Then, when Windows was installed using the OEM SLP (in factory) Windows key leans on the motherboard and he sees the flag proper Bios OEM (for the manufacturer and the version of Windows) and activates.   The computer that needs validation has been custom-made. It has not come pre-configured with an activated copy of Windows. This DVD is all I have. Can someone suggest a good course of action?

  If the product key was installed on the computer, we could get it back with a software, but when you re-installed you erased it is is no longer available.  I'm afraid, there is nothing really that can be done - you need the product key to activate and Microsoft is not going to give you one just because you have a disk (or even if you have the receipt).  The same thing will happen to you if you try to activate without a valid product key.

  I'm sorry, there is nothing else we can do to help you - but without the product key you have little or no options.

  Yes, you're in luck because you do not have the original DVD plastic case. The product key, if I remember correctly, is on a sticker inside the DVD case or on the back of it.

  And, moreover, there is now a new streets and trips 2010. It has several feature improvements.
