Then I accidentally deleted my slui and rundll.exe and couldn't get them back because there was no previous version.   Thanks for posting on the Microsoft answers Forum.  The first thing I would suggest running a virus scan.  Make sure you have no virus causing problems.  If you do not have an antivirus program, then you can download it free here: http://www.microsoft.com/Security_essentials/

  If there is no virus or it still does not work after virus cleaning, then start in safe mode and test from there.  Here are the instructions for Safe Mode.

  I use Vista.  My main account on the computer (private) is also the administrator account.  The password has expired.  I saw a warning a week previously, but not once since and completely forgotten.  I can access the other user account, but not my main account Vista was preinstalled on the computer so I can't reinstall windows.  I thought to restore my computer to an earlier date (for example,), but do not know if that would restore my password expired or not.  Other solutions?   You can contact your computer manufacturer and ask them to send you a set of recovery disks.

  They should do this for a small fee.

  And if you have never received a recovery disk when you bought your computer, there should be a recovery Partition on the hard drive to reinstall Vista on how you purchased your computer.

  The recovery process can be started by pressing a particular combination of the key or keys at startup. (Power on / start)

  Maybe it's F10, F11, Alt + F10, etc., depending on the manufacturer.

  My first step would be to uninstall Norton. It's a bad choice, there are a number of best freeware options. The first thing that many experienced users do when you buy a new laptop should immediately remove preinstalled McAfee or Norton trial copy.

  This means that a different password was in effect at this point, even if your daughter thinks otherwise. There are a lot of options built into Windows to help you out of this situation:

  • Log on to your account admin to spare, and then reset the password for your existing account (works only if you set up an alternative admin account).
  • Log in as administrator mode without failure, then reset the password for your existing account (the password is usually empty).
  • Insert your flash drive USB with the password key file (only works if you have taken the time to create such a key file).
  • Use the password indicator (only works if an indicator was created and if it's good enough to allow you to guess the password)
  • Check your paper files (works only if you threw down the password somewhere)

  The most important point would be: run a machine without a spare admin account is about as risky to have a house key. Sooner or later, he is at risk for any number of reasons.

  If you did something else - and return to a 2008 version of your desktop sounds as you did - then the answer is that your data is probably missing.
