I can't get my external HARD drive to open

I have a number of backups from HARD drive external.  With 2 of them, the usual information of 'loading' is not pop up.  When I go to "Computer" I can not find them.  When I approach using control devices Center I can find them but can not open them.  My all says device driver works.  I have no records, but at least there's nine. I have an acer e-machine with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

Hello

-Have you tried to connect the external hard drive on another computer?
-You receive an error message while trying to access external hard drives?
-Did you do changes on the computer before this problem?

Method 1: I suggest you follow the steps to run the Troubleshooting Utility from the link and check if the problem persists.
Open the hardware and devices Troubleshooter

Method 2: I also suggest you to check the status of the external drive in disk management and check if that helps.

    Hello ShamedMonkey,

Thank you for your message.  The problem you are having is because of differences in formatting between PC and Mac.  You can, however, transfer your files between the two.  I will set out what must be done under and limitations of each.
First, you will need to format the drive on your PC.  When you format the PC, you can format it in FAT32 or NTFS.
(You mentioned that you do not see the drive in the computer) To format drive:
Click 'Start' > right click on 'Computer' > select 'manage '.
    Click on "disk management".
In the right pane, you should see your drive > you can then do a right click and 'format '.
    FAT32:
This format will allow you to easily transfer files between the two.  This format becomes problematic when you transfer files more than 4 G.  There is a limit of 4 GB in FAT32, etc. of many movies are bigger than that and cannot be transferred using this format.
    NTFS
This format has no size limitation, however, in its normal state it will be 'Read only' on Mac.  If you will not be able to transfer all the data itself.  While doing some research on the web, it seems that you can use a program called MacFuse on your Mac to change to NTFS files.  I have not confirmed this, but you can give it a try.  If this program works as planned, it would be the way to go.
Please let us know if it did or did not solve your problem.

Can I use an external hard drive from 1 to 2 to my laptop? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Hi @ptr1959w!

Yes, you can use an external hard drive on your laptop - just connect via one of the USB ports on your machine, partition and format it in disk management, and you should be ready to go. Here is an article with the steps you can follow to do this:

I do not use homegroups, but 'true' to share, so I don't know how this is supposed to work with homegroups. But usually he should share a drive or folder, first before you can access it from another machine. (for example, click on the drive/folder properties and go to the sharing tab)

  • can I use an external hard drive to increase the disk space and memory on xp?

I am considering an external hard drive of 1 TB to trasmet all files on the computer. There is little hard drive space and memory left. Can I use the external hard drive free space and can it will be installed via USB and use my operating system?

You can use the external hard drive to transfer your data from your internal hard drive.  Cannot move system files (such as Program Files, Windows and swap files) well.  Looks like your use of the word 'memory' made reference to disk space - it normally refers to which an external drive would not affect RAM.  If you mean disk space, however, you can certainly free SPAC drive this way.

I hope this helps.  Good luck.

  • I can't erase my external hard drive as my Mac told me!

I have a Fantom external hard drive 1 TB which is my drive Time Machine for years.  Sometimes it disconnects itself, but it has reconnected always very well.  But today as I got an error message that says that the drive could not be fixed by disk utility and would not appear as a disk in the Finder.  Utility disk SEES the drive but can't get it cannot eject it and can't fix it.  I'm ok with totally annihilate and nine.  She had backups, and I can easily do a new backup at any time.  The problem is that the disk utility will not mount it so I can delete it, but when I try just to erase, it cannot do without mount everything first!  I'm in this catch-22: How can I wipe the drive and start over when disk utility can't do?  It also will not mount on my Windows laptop, so I can't wipe it clean there either, reformat it on my Mac.  Anyone have an idea how I can just wipe my own drive so that I can use it on my Mac again?

    UPDATE TO ORIGINAL POSTER:

I was finally able to remedy using Terminal Server by following the instructions described here:

    http://Apple.StackExchange.com/a/105674

    It reads in part:

You can force unmount a disk by running the following command in Terminal:

    diskutil unmountDisk force /Volumes/VOLUMENAME

Replace VOLUMENAME by the name of a volume on the disk that you are trying to take it apart.

I had first to use "diskutil list" first to find out what the Mac called this external hard drive because it was RECOGNIZED but would not mount or dismount.  Instead of using "/ Volumes/VOLUMENAME", my Mac called the drive in question "/ dev/disk2.  My full order was "diskutil unmountDisk force/dev/disk2".

It worked immediately, and then disk utility was very quickly able to erase the disc.  Once erased, he mounted again very well!  So if anyone has the same problem, try this!

  • Where and how can I reinstall the external hard drive to the new HD to the computer?

    Original title: HD crashed.

I want to thank the person who answered my question about the HD crashed I saved all my data and window xp. My next question is, how and where can I reinstall external hard drive for the new HD to the computer? Should I send it to drive c or where? I'm not strong when it comes to computers. I know just enough to get me in trouble. Thank you.

    Hello!

You will need to use a full copy of Windows XP.  Should be a sticker with the product key on the side of your desk or below if it is a laptop.

Once you have this drive, you can reinstall Windows XP.  After you have installed all the software and drivers, you will be able to transfer all your data to the new HARD drive.

If you don't have a copy of Windows XP, you can probably get a copy of the recovery from the manufacturing of computer media.  Just to provide the model and serial number and they should sent it.

  • MY c DRIVE is nearly full. Can I use my external hard drive because it has a lot of space

My ' it shows only 123 MB available disc. I have a 500 GB external hard drive, but am not sure how to use it to free up space on my drive "C".

Any help would be much appreciated.
    Roy Warner

    Hi Roy,

Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

The description of the problem you have provided, I understand that your C drive is full and trying to move some information on external hard drive.

I will certainly help you in this matter.

If you have data files in the C drive, you can go ahead and move them to the external hard drive. You will not be able to move the files to the program on the external hard drive.

In order to get the free space in C drive, you can go ahead and uninstall the software bit that you use it often.

    See the link.

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-in/Windows-Vista/uninstall-or-change-a-program

You can also delete files using disk cleanup, which would reduce the number of unnecessary files on your hard disk to free up disk space.

    See the link.

    Hi John and Missy Verhoog,

    1. What is the error message you are getting?

2 have you checked the State of the drive in Device Manager?

Check to see if the external drive is getting detected in Device Manager.

    a. Click Start, type devmgmt.msc and press to enter.

    b. find the name of the drive in the list of Bus USB controllers.

    c. right click on the device, and then select properties to view general information about the drivers.

You can also read the following article and see if it helps:

As you go only to transfer data from one to the other files, here's a good option...

It is a very useful device to have some kicking around when you need to get data on a drive that does more boot.

You must get permission to access folders on the old disk to the new computer and this is how you do it.

Download the zip on the site below...

.. and it is there that find the link to the zip on the site...

When you run the zip file, it places a new item in the right click menu called 'Take Ownership'

To use it, you highlight the file or the folder on which you want the property, right click and select take ownership.

Then a window will appear and many data authorizations through pretty quickly. When permissions have been granted, the window will close and you will be able to easily access data in the file or the first selected folder...

  • How can I stop my external hard drives being renamed by Lightroom?

Since early December, I had countless problems with LR and my external hard drives. I have 3 all Western Digital external hard drives, 2 x 320 GB passport and 1 x 1 TB elements. I called the hard disks of the computer named them when I first installed them (E & F). Since then the LR calls what he wants when I plug them so there are always question marks next to my photos as LR think I plugged a different hard drive.

Although I don't have 1 x 1 TB hard drive WD Elements LR called something different if I unplug it and plug it in again then it starts and then trying to find all my pictures.

My partner has no such problems as he never unplug his hard drives, but I need that sometimes I'm working on a laptop with the same LR catalog, if I work, so I take a drive with me with the images.

    I could do with:

    (a) a method of naming, my hard drives from WD for LR acknowledges that are connected

(((b) a very simple digital workflow - I have many books of LR but need a genius LR say 1) cela 2) do this etc - I have about 30 000 pictures and even without the hard drive problems make me a bit stuck trying to be organized - I am a photographer not an administrator and I'm really bad on the organizational side.

Help, please, I'm drowning in technology - ps I love Lightroom!

So the question is probably WIndows XP. When you attach a remote drive, Windows XP can arbitrarily assign it to one of the drive letters D: through Z: assignments. A: and B: are reserved for floppy disk drives, and C: is usually indicated on the startup disk where Windows XP.

The drive letters change generally when you plug external drives in different order. So if you have DriveA and DriveB, and you plug in DriveA then DriveB, then DriveA can get assigned D: and DriveB may be assigned E:. If, however, one branch in DriveB first then DriveA, the order will probably flip over in which case Lightroom lose track of all the photos he had previously in location D: and E:.

The solution is to use the windows Disk Manager to force the assignment of drive letters. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307844 for more details. Set mailbox that uses Lightroom.

A problem you may encounter is if you connect a new drive, then attach your photo disks. I believe Windows will give you the new drive D; slot, since it is not used, but then randomly divided the photo viewer because it is defined location is not available. Windows is a manager of poor things, Apple is not.

The solution is to always attach the disks in the same order, and Windows will affect the drive correctly, assume a has completed the tasks in article.

Another approach is to use the Windows mount command. If you're brave, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/205524.
