I can't read attachments.

I save on laptop and can usually read some message, but the rest is just jibberish.  This prevents printing.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

What is a notebook accessory?  Do you mean a .txt file type (or another type of file that is supposed to open with Notepad)?  Go to start / Default programs / associated with a file or Protocol with a program and highlight the file type of the attachment (the extension to three digits following the name of the file) and make sure that Notepad is selected to open this type of file.  This happens with all Notebook Accessories?  Try opening a Notepad file on your system that you can read and send email to yourself and see if you can read in the email - if yes, then the process works properly and issues is with these attachments.

If the notebook is properly selected, perhaps these file extensions are incorrect - they do not represent the real file of the file type (so Vista using the wrong program to try to open).  Or maybe that extensions are correct, but they were created by another program that is unable to read the notebook (which happens with some programs where the notebook is considered the value by default but can not read these files, because they were created in a way that cannot interpret the notebook).  Discover the sender, this program was used to create the files - you may need to get some programs which can display these types of files.

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck!

  • I can't read attachments. When I download they are encrypted.

Please can someone tell me how I can make these readable downloaded files?

I created a new user and it works again. Somehow, I think I must have uninstalled Adobe reader from my old account.

    Thanks, it works great now

  • Why I can't download attachments in the emails? I use Wind.Int.Explorer.

Often, I receive an e-mail with a document to open or be ownloaded d. I use the new program area of Comcast .net receive on Vista. Comcast said it was a Microsoft problem. The document said that usually it's a Word 2007 Document allowing macros. When I hit open, it opens a window and save in a file. It doesn't seem to be a way to open this file in the place of «.saved» So, how to open these attachments?

Need a program on your system that can read Word documents.  You have MS Word/Office or the free Word Viewer http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3657ce88-7cfa-457a-9aec-f4f827f20cac&displaylang=en or the free OpenOffice www.openoffice.org (that I recommend in your current situation if you do not have Word/Office) or something else that does the job (but you must be SURE he can read Word 2007 documents allowing macro.)  Earlier versions of Word or Word Viewer (or same OpenOffice) might have problems with such a document unless they have been updated to handle the new format (and can be done at the center of technical support of Microsoft Office or by downloading the latest versions of OpenOffice or Word Viewer).  Once installed, then you can then read attachments and Word documents.  Try to open attachments again.

Maybe there is a problem with the associations.  Double-click on any Word on your system (probably one in Documents or on your desktop) and see if it opens Word and displays the document.  In fact, try to open the saved file to see if you can.  If so, then the associations work and which is not the problem.  If no, go to Start/Default / programs / associate a file or Protocol with a program / search .doc and check the default program - is probably not Word.  Click on edit, then select Word.  If Word is not an option, click Browse and locate the file winword.exe (somewhere in Program Files) and make it the default.  Do the same for .docx and .rtf (and any other type of file that Word to open).  Then try to open the attachment again (you may need to reboot for changes to take effect).

If this does not work and you have the right programs so I am sorry to say that the problem is probably with the e-mail program and not with Microsoft (Word or Vista) - despite what you have been told by comcast.  Try using Microsoft Mail or Microsoft Live Mail like e-mail software to see if you can get your email and download attachments of one of these programs.  It shouldn't be too difficult to implement one of them (Microsoft Live Mail is a little better, but it must be downloaded while Microsoft Mail is already installed) - parameters should be essentially the same that you use for your comcast mail (you may need to go into the settings of mail to comcast to get them because they probably put in place for you and you don't know them).  If you can get Microsoft Mail or Microsoft Live Mail to send and receive email, and then send yourself a Word attachment and then when you receive it see if you can open it.  If you can, then the problem is certainly their e-mail software (and you can prove to them telling them that it works with Microsoft Mail or Windows Live Mail).

A work around until the problem is resolved, just save attachments and then open documents saved - at least you will be able to access the information in this way until common sense is fixed.

If none of the works above, try posting your question in the online Forum to get Networking, E-mail, to: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistanetworking/threads where the people who specialize in problems like yours email will be more than happy to help you with your problem.

    I hope this helps.

  • How can I get Outlook 2007 to read attachments and .eml files?

I'm a web developer, working from home.  Many of my clients tell me through programs such as Yahoo Messenger and Skype conversation.  Often, they send messages to an end-user for me on yahoo or Skype which are .eml files.  These files describe bugs or other mistakes which experienced end users.

I don't understand why I can't read the 'eml' files in Outlook 2007.  Currently, windows 2007 wants to use windows live mail to open these files.

Is there an add-on third party who will give this feature in Outlook 2007?

I solved the problem for users of 64-bit Windows 7 and Vista 64-bit users

    (1) Open regedit.exe (the registry editor)
    2) access HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Microsoft Internet Mail Message WLMail\shell\open\command
    (3) change "C:\Program Files (x 86) \Windows Live\Mail\wlmail.exe" /eml:%1 to "C:\Program Files (x 86)" \Microsoft Office\Office12\OUTLOOK. "» EXE' /eml '%1' (don't forget the quotes!)
    (4) restart your computer

In this way, windows thinks that "Windows Live Mail" is still the default program to open .eml files.  However, we have changed the registry so that instead of open Windows Live Mail, we open OUTLOOK. EXE.  What I mean is that if you open Control Panel, click default programs associated with Windows Live Mail .eml files, we have decked out the registry so that it will open opportunities-even if Windows has always said that it is associated with Windows Live.  Confusing, I know.

The best analogy are these old commercials where "we secretly changed detergent Lisa's favorite new all temperature Cheer!  In this case we secretly changed Windows Live Mail with Outlook when it comes to open .eml attachments.

In any case, this tip worked for me.  I can open the .eml simply files by double-clicking them.  You can always change things if you decide to upgrade to Windows Live.
