I can't restore the automatic update, HELP!

Automatic update has been disabled and I can't turn it back on.
I tried to restore, several times, to no avail.
In addition, Windows Live OneCare is touched by it.
On top of that, I can't uninstall "avast Antivirus", which is in conflict with Windows Live OneCare.

My system is running Windows Vista Edition Home Premium

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html

Above is the Avast uninstall tool.

You will have problems because you have 2 anti-virus installed, (Avast and Live One Care.)

That's a no-no in computer science.

They cause a conflict between them and cause other programs to crash.

See you soon. Mick Murphy - Microsoft partner

  • I can't change the automatic update settings

I noticed recently that the automatic update of windows is no longer asked me whether to download updates. When I checked the settings via the Control Panel setting had been changed to "Install updates automatically". The toolbar is now grayed out and I am unable to choose another option!

I'm the only person using this computer as administrator, with a single user profile. I don't understand why I'm not allowed to change these settings more and you would appreciate the help.

Personal data backup (which none should be considered 100% reliable at this point) then format the HARD disk and do a clean install of Windows. Please note that a repair installation (upgrade AKA on-site) will NOT fix it!

HOW to do a clean install of Win7: see "using the custom installation and formatting the hard drive option" (or "reinstall it Windows 7") http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Installing-and-reinstalling-Windows-7 article

NOTE: If your computer came with a set of disks, there is a hidden partition restore (not to be confused with the restoration of the system) you would use to do the clean install (AKA a "destructive recovery").

After the new installation, you will have the equivalent of a "new computer" in order to take care of EVERYTHING on the next page before connecting the machine to the internet or one local network (i.e. other computers) AND BEFORE to plug in a flash, SD card, or any other external drive to the computer otherwise:

VERY IMPORTANT! -Online free trial Norton will be reinstalled (but invalid) when Windows is reinstalled. You MUST uninstall the trial for free AND download/run the Norton Removal Tool again BEFORE installing updates AND BEFORE installing your new anti-virus application (for example, Microsoft Security Essentials - free, instead of AVG).

If you need additional assistance with the clean install, please start a new thread in this forum: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7repair/threads

[If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, good reputation and stand-alone computer (that is, not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) repair shop.]
