    Hi Annavan,

Microsoft or our partners make unsolicited phone calls (also known as the telephone canvassing) you charge for security patches or software. These calls will be made by a person with whom you can check that you are already a customer. Cybercriminals often use publicly available telephone directories so they might know your name and other personal information when they call you. They could even guess what operating system you are using. If you receive an unsolicited call from someone who claims to be from Technical Support Microsoft, hang up. We do not have such calls.

  • How can I stop CHKDSK from running on startup?

CHKDSK turned on somehow and now every time I start my Pc it runs this program.  It is on my hard drive and takes a long time to startup!  How can I stop the program from running at startup?

The next time your system starts and installs, you should check the bit of impurity of the volume as follows:

Click Start, run and enter in the box:

    cmd

Click OK to open the command prompt window.

To query the bit of impurity on drive C, type:

    fsutil dirty query C:

    The sample output:
    Volume c is dirty
    Volume C: is dirty

Type "exit" to close the command prompt window.

Is your disc dirty or it is not dirty?    If you have more than one volume, check all out them.

A volume is marked usually dirty of a power outage or something like using the power button to restart the system.  One of this kind of thing has happened before this problem?

The command chkntfs /d to clear a chkdsk waiting you plan yourself, but it does not clear the dirty bit.

The command chkntfs /X C: never say XP check the reader for inconsistencies again and perhaps not a good idea since the reader may really need that chkdsk to run on it.  If the dirty bit is just NOT clear, no matter what you do, your HARD disk may be failing / failed.

The only way to clear the dirty bit is a success of chkdsk /r and if she will not clear at the start of your system, I would run it from the XP Recovery Console so you can watch it run and if you like, run it again until it runs its own.  You cannot check the good bit of impurity of the XP Recovery Console, but you can see what chkdsk/r.

Since we don't know anything about your system, here are some instructions for making a CD of bootable XP Recovery Console and from there, you can run chkdsk/r until it comes clean.

Boot into the Recovery Console Windows using an XP bootable installation CD.

If you have no XP bootable media (or aren't sure you have) create a bootable XP Recovery CD of Console and do not forget.

This is not the same as recovery disks that might have come with the acquisition of the system store.

You can make a bootable Recovery Console CD by downloading an ISO file and burn it to a CD.

The ISO bootable image file you need to download is called:

    xp_rec_con. ISO

    Download the ISO from here:

    http://www.mediafire.com/?ueyyzfymmig

Use a new CD and this simple and free program to burn your ISO file and create your bootable CD:

    http://www.ImgBurn.com/

When you install ImgBurn, DO NOT install the Ask toolbar.

Here are some instructions for ImgBurn:

    http://Forum.ImgBurn.com/index.php?showtopic=61

It would be a good idea to test your bootable CD on a computer running.

You may need to adjust the computer BIOS settings to use the CD-ROM drive as the first device to boot instead of the hard drive.  These adjustments are made before Windows tries to load.  If you miss it, you will need to restart the system again.

When you start on the CD, follow the instructions:

Press any key to boot from CD...

    Installing Windows... going to pronounce.

Press 'R' to enter the Recovery Console.

Select the installation that you want to access (usually 1: C:\WINDOWS)

You may be asked to enter the password (usually empty).

You should be in the folder C:\WINDOWS.  It's the same as the

C:\Windows folder that you see in Solution Explorer.

The Recovery Console allows base as file commands: copy, rename, replace, delete, chkdsk, fixboot, fixmbr, cd, etc.

For a list of the commands in the Recovery Console, type help at the prompt of commands or read on here XP Recovery Console:

    http://www.Microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/proddocs/en-us/recovery_console_cmds.mspx?mfr=true

A good idea before you start things must first verify the integrity of your file system by using the chkdsk command.

In the command prompt window, run the chkdsk command on the drive where Windows is installed to try to fix any problems on the afflicted player.

Running chkdsk is fine, even if he finds no problem.  It won't hurt anything to run it.

Assuming your boot drive is C, run the following command:

    CHKDSK C: /r

Let chkdsk finish to correct the problems, he could find.

It may take a long time for chkdsk complete or they seem to be "stuck".  Be patient.  If the HARD drive led blinks always, chkdsk is something.  Keep an eye on the amount of the percentage to be sure that it is still making progress.  It may even seem to go back sometime.

You must run chkdsk/r again until it finds no error to correct.

Remove the CD, and then type "exit" to exit the RC and restart the computer.

You have not to set the BIOS to boot the disk HARD since the CD won't be.

  • Function of gradation on background of what I posted windows screen - how can I stop this? (Windows 7)

This has been driving me crazy and I can't seem to understand what it is or how to stop it!

Depending on whether the window/application/website that I posted is dark or light, my screen will slowly decrease or brighten in response.  For example, if I open a Web page that is all black, my screen turns off slowly.  If I switch to a blank Word document with a white background, the screen will slowly ease back.

It is incredibly annoying and really caring about my eyes.  I tried the steps to disable the Adaptive brightness, but it doesn't seem to be the same thing.  Any suggestions are appreciated!

If it helps, I am running Windows 7 on a Dell Latitude laptop.

Dell has their own extra brightness setting that works regardless of your Windows operating system, you will need to check that.  If you can't find it, Dell.com has 'chat with a tech' to guide you.

  • How can I stop MSN Messenger running at startup in Windows 7?

The options listed for XP or Vista don't work or are not available in Windows 7. I prefer not to uninstall it completely, but if it's the only option, I'll have to. Any suggestions?

    Hello richy1995,

Thanks for posting on the Microsoft answers Forum.

You can try the Windows Installer Cleanup tool. It helps with programs that are installed by using an .msi package.
It does not uninstall the program and will not remove the actual program from your computer. However, it will remove the installation files so that you can start the installation, upgrade, or uninstall on. Click here to download the utility.

Then, use the instructions below to uninstall MSN Messenger.

    • Go to the Control Panel
    • Click on Add/Remove Programs
    • Scroll down to find and then click MSN Messenger
    • Click Remove

Follow the prompts that results, and MSN Messenger are uninstalled.

If you talk about Live Messenger,
    Go to add/remove programs
    Click Windows Live Essentials
    Click Change/Remove
You will get an option to uninstall part of windows live essentials, which includes messenger 2009.

Hope these instructions for your question.

  • How can I save and synchronize Windows 8 startup screens

I have two desktops Windows Pro 8, with two different copies of Windows 8 Pro on each machine.  I connect both machines using the same account Hotmail from Microsoft.  Of course, the start screen a metro looks different than the other Metro Screen start, because they are two different and two different Windows 8 Pro activations or facilities computers.  There is a handy tool to help me quickly and effectively synchronize two different splash screens so that in the end, the two look alike?  Is there a tool to maintain the provisions of start screen and groups synchronized in the future?  If not, is it possible to copy groups and page of the start screen of 'Favorites' on the first machine to the second machine, forcing start screen of the second machine to look exactly like the 'Favorites' splash screen on the first machine of tiles?  Then all I have to do is to get a screen begin to look the way I want it, and then periodically copy this splash screen "Favorite" for the second machine for the same look, so not having to build and maintain two completely different search screens starting on two completely different machines.  Is it possible to sync up to the tile of the Office on both machines so that the Office looks the same on both machines?  I guess I want to synchronize all of the loading, instead of synchronizing individual files.  Is it possible to do?

I would like to start on the dual core to look like and receive the screen start I built on the old machine of single base.

I thought that was why we were using Live ID.

Saved settings are available when you connect to your account on any PC in Windows 8. Your PC will be set up just the way you are used to!

  • Can I create a second Windows 7 startup disk?

    Here's the question:

Even though I have an install of Windows 7 perfectly well supplied with the Inspiron 3847, can I format a second disk and reinstall from scratch on that one?

    Here's why...

When I got my computer a few weeks ago, it has a large and I started to install all my programs.  A specific program ran very well in the beginning, but after a week, he started to break with a stackhash_2264 error.  I did some research to death and found nothing.  I just installed MS Expressions, and it crashes with the same error.  I have to figure that something I installed along the way don't play well with others.  I tried to start with only basic services and startups, but nothing works.

What I would do is to do a fresh install and start to install my programs in the same order as I did initially and to locate the place where things got ugly.  I spent a LOT of time to install and configure all my programs, and I really don't want all uninstall if that can be avoided.

    Thanks for any help

DBAR = Dell backup and restore.  If your menu button is updated you have 1.5 or 1.6 and should DBAR before MAKING the UPDATE of the USB recovery media.

You can't save everything, including the new software installed without the version $paid of DBAR.  For this, I recommend a flash drive 128 GB usb of the MicroCenter, which costs $50.

Mine was 1.6 and I got my 3847 at Christmas with Windows 8 pro "with windows 7 installed pro" label while it was important to me that I get a GOOD backup who would work in the event of disaster.

If you have the old version, I do it again and delete the backup on the flash drive.  New version 1.7 will restore on any size HDD while the old version will insist that she's as big or more drive to work with.

Aka, I used an old 80 GB drive that I nuked to see if the FlashDrive bootable restore would work.

USB drives will last 50 years without problems, but the recovery DVD burned disks deteriorate over 10 years or less.

Recovery and backup of Dell. DBAR

These issues Existed with the safe Application of data as well.

    Download Dell backup and restore

    1. 16 gig or major media USB 2.0 should be recommended on DVD burned, because they don't last.

    2. you cannot recover to drive SMALLER that the original AKA 250 GB SSD drive cannot be the recovery with 1 TB or deleted 500 gig drive. (This has been fixed with version 1.7.0.64)

    3. the recovery partition is encrypted instead of a hidden factory WIM file that can be saved.  This means also you cannot use Ghost or Acronis to clone the drive and keep the factory restore F8.

(This also has been fixed with version 1.7.0.64)

    4. a recovery media made with previous versions of DBAR cannot be upgraded.  You need to update or install the new version and then perform a full bootable backup.

The problem with that need 3 DVDs or more to make a recovery media are one of reliability.

That's why I recommend a 16 Gig or more USB flash drive instead. (It takes 10 min to do concerts)

"Error 0 x 4001100200001005 if the problem persists contact Dell technical support.

You get error 0 x 4001100200001005 is because the OEM hard drive was replaced by a hard drive of retail sales.  OEM drives are or "tattooed" brand and the DELL recovery media it will search before installing.  This is also why you cannot clone Dell new blank hard drives.
