Hello

Are you running MSE or other antivirus/security programs stop Windows Defender from
running? Whether Windows Defender is blocked from running by them. McAfee, AVG, and
others do this. MSE includes Windows Defender features in it run
separately would be redundant.

Troubleshooting of Windows Defender

"%ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MsAsCui.exe" is the folder of the default Defender

Start - type in the search box-> Windows Defender - find top - make a right click on it.
RUN AS ADMIN

If no joy using Start - computer or Windows Explorer to access this folder and create a
Shortcut to put on the desktop and the Start Menu. You can also right click on a shortcut this and
see if they point to here.

Goal

Start in

Maybe something here if necessary:

What is display / causing the error message? Some anitvirus/security/antispyware products can
cause this error. On those that you use including THOSE that you had never even those
uninstalled (the remnants can cause problems). McAfee is just an example of what many can do.

Start - type in the search box - Services - find top - Right Click - Run as Admin

Windows Defender - value STARTED and AUTOMATIC

or set MANUAL and STOPPED if necessary

    Original title: windows defender error.

I get an error of windows defender, 0x800106ba, whatever that means?  I am not able to turn on the Defender because of this error...

What other security programs you have running? Many as MSE, Norton, McAfee, AVG, etc., will stop Windows Defender because they have the same functionality, and having two programs running at the same time and make security the same work can lead to conflicts. This is by design and must be accepted by the user.

How can I turn on windows Defender? error 0x8001o6a,

    Hello, Michael

Do you have an antivirus or anti-malware program?
    If so, what is?

Most security software have their own form of protection and disables Windows Defender. Microsoft Security Essentials for this example. If this is the case, you can ignore the error.

If you don't have any installed security software, check that the service is enabled and started:

    1. click on start, in the search box, type: "services.msc" (without the quotes) and press ENTER.
    2. double-click on the service "Windows Defender".
    3. click on the 'general' tab. Make sure the "Startup Type" is "automatic". Click on apply. Then click on "Start" under "Status of Service" to start the service.

You are running Microsoft Security Essentials, AVG, Norton or McAfee?
If you run one of those, she didn't have Defender. It's
good, not bad. Not only is there potential conflict, but there is no
reason to have both; essentially, they have something very similar
for the Defender integrated and running both at once will hurt your
performance and create the risk of problems that are contrary to each
    others.

  • I can't update the Windows Defender definitions and get this message: the program can't check for definition updates. Error: Code 0xc8000408.

Impossible to find info on what this means or what to do so I can again update in Windows Defender. This error message has begun to appear recently, or at least I think. I thought it was set to automatic update, but when I tried to do it manually because it says it's expired. Tried several times but get the same message every time.

You are welcome. Your computer must NOT be connected to the internet or networks without a fully functional antivirus, completely update installed application. But first, let's take care of any Norton "leftovers"...

    1. download the Norton Removal Tool, save it to your desktop: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

    2. close all open applications (that is, anything with an icon on the taskbar).

    3. click right on the file saved in #1 above, and then select run as administrator to run the utility. DO TAP not your keyboard until the race ends, then restart.

Now, you will need to download/install an antivirus application. While I do not recommend professionally AVG, you might find that AVG Free 9.0 more compatible if you choose a CUSTOM this time installation above and don't install NOT of Linkscanner Search-Shield, Active Surf-Shield, security or the email of crawl components toolbar.

Why you don't need your anti-virus to scan your email
       http://thundercloud.NET/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

Otherwise, I can recommend Microsoft Security Essentials*, Avira AntiVirand Avast (all free) and NOD32 and Kaspersky (not the suites 'internet security'). After you have installed your AV application selected, manually & repeatedly updated until you get one invites 'no more updates'.

[Avoid Norton & McAfee IMHO applications.]

    =============================
    * Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) includes components of antivirus and antispyware protection. The latter will replace (and must turn off automatically) Windows Defender in Vista.
