I have a Sandisk Cruzer Edge 16 GB Flash Drive.  I use it with two computers, an iMac and a Macbook Air, both using OS X 10.8.2.  Recently, I loaded about 10 GB of files on it.  I have now deleted these files.  However, Finder always shows the Flash drive as carrying 10.8 GB of files and having only 5,2 GB of available.  When I try to record a 10 GB file on the Flash drive, I get a message saying that there is not enough available space.

How can I delete uploaded files from the Flash drive so that I can reuse the whole 16 GB?

  • As I was deleting some files from my hard drive, I came across some files that I couldn't remove with a message saying remove wite protection.

As I was deleting some files from my hard drive, I came across some files that I couldn't remove with a message saying remove wite protection. Help!

This error indicates that an application is using this file at this point here. If you are unable to remove it, restart your computer and then try to delete it.

IF YOU ARE NOT SUCCESSFUL WITH THE above METHOD, THEN TRY to USE UNLOCKER, a free application that disables the application using the file that you want to delete.
    Download unlocker from here-http://www.filehippo.com/download_unlocker/
Click on the above link and click on download the newer version on the right side of the screen.
Download UNLOCKER from the link given above and install it. (you may need to restart the computer)
Right-click on the file you want to delete, and then click unlocker.
A new window opens showing all applications using this file.
Select all files, and then click on unblock.
Now right-click on the file you want to delete, and then click on remove.
YOUR FILE WILL BE DELETED SUCCESSFULLY.
If you are still unable to delete that file and unlocker shows no application, then follow these steps-
Right-click on the file you want to delete and click unlocker.
    A small window will appear.
In the drop-down list, choose delete, and then click ok.
Your file will be deleted on the next reboot of the system.
  • Copy the files from the flash drive on the hard drive but I don't want to copy the files I already have.

I have Windows XP.  I have a flash drive with many files that I have on my second hard drive.  I just it copies the files that I have on the hard drive and I don't want to have to sit and answer 'yes' or 'no' question about the replacement of files each time that it recognizes a file duplicate. How do I do that?

When you see this double prompt or not, are there not a checkbox that says something like "Always do this for all files" or something in that sense?

You can manually copy the files. Here is the CTRL key while you click the files you want and then just drag them to the location on the HARD drive.

I gave a flashdrive to someone else to look at some of the files it contains. They came back with several deleted files and refuse the removal of these files. Is it possible to prove their computer or device removed these files?

Even if you haven't "proved" anything (you don't go - your answer is 'no')-you were the one who gave it to them, transferring the trust of these files for them.  I hope it wasn't the only copy of the files you had (that you approve of someone completely with.)

After you delete the files from the drive 'C', the fragmenteur of disc (under Tools) does not work.  What should do?

    Ron

In which window you find "Tools"? To run under Vista Disk Defragmenter, I would choose to start, all programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter.

What is the exact error message when you try to run Disk Defragmenter?

Is the hard drive, a conventional or solid state drive?

  • I deleted a file from my portable hard drive, can I get it back?

I deleted a file from my portable hard drive, I need help to get it back?

First stop using your portable player as your deleted folder is now considered to be unallocated space and can be replaced by new data. This would then make your chances of recovering your file much less likely.

First check your trash. If it is not there then...

There are some free and paid for recovery software. Just Google.

If there are companies that specialize in data recovery. This would be an expenditure of significabt, but would probably be to maximize your chances. It depends on your expertise & how data is important for to know you which way you want to choose.

One last point if your data is important, be sure to have a backup plan in place. Having your important data in one place requires trouble.
