I - delta.vmdk files, non - .vmsn files. It is safe to delete all the snapshots in snapshot Manager?
Hello
Our VM froze because our ESXi data store is full. I deleted - .vmsn for the 1st file snapshot via CLI (using the "rm" command).
VM is on thick disk and have 2 snapshots. so I still - flat.vmdk, - delta.vmdk. (for the two snapshots) and - .vmsn (only for the 2nd snapshot).
wouldn't be all right if I delete all the snapshots in snapshot Manager? ATM, we don't have that 8 GB on the data store, and snapshot size is approximately 67GB
Thank you
Dan
The lack of . VMSN file shouldn't cause problems because it is necessary in case you want to or need to go back to a snapshot. In all cases, with only 8 GB of free space on the disk, you can consider deleting the snapshot with the virtual machine being turned off. This avoids the need for disk space temporary additional database snapshots while / delta are merged into the base/flat disc.

Hello, I have a great difficulty using the file/collection a large file I did months ago, because when I use it, the file is created, but it takes 2.5 to space! compared to others of my works, taking almost 1 TB of files, this one is too big and I think by deleting some files, but I don't want to make a mistake, so I wanted to ask here, if it is possible to take a main composition and only do a file/collection of this composition, objects and elements that serve there (the last I made on my account at least, with the elements used on that, because I think that there are many (if not a large part of them) files and elements that are not used in the final version, as scenes of the version beta of my work, the problem is the composition is too long and have a lot of different archives or drop movies then it could take forever to do it manually...
Thanks for reading me! I hope that this is a solution...
It's a two-step process:
1. reduce your project to the desired composition.
2 recover your files.

Hello
Coincidentally, using the browser data store, I've deleted almost all the files in one of the guest OS. Only files vmdk (dish and delta) have survived. So far I've managed to run (using this link http://tinyurl.com/yda5f8d ( ) the guest using OS his - flat.vmdk file and it works very well. The problem is, it's an operating system in the former State, and I would go back to the last snapshot (I have two actually).
I have ESXi 3.5 and the use of the Mode of Tech support. So I base (flat) file and not visible (from vClient) snapshot two working files. Browser data store using I can see them under delta.vmdk - 000001-xxx and xxx-000002 - delta.vmdk. Should what kind of magic I type in the console to restore my operating system in the lates snapshot? It's ok to merge these snapshots in a main flat file if it would be faster or easier.
Concerning
Piotr
OK, let's give it a try.
Attached you will find a collection of files that are generated, assuming that the snapshot 000002 was the last. I'll give you the steps to make sure that the current data files will not be affected where 000001 was the last snapshot.
- delete the virtual machine of the inventory
- Download files attached to the virtual machine file
- Delete the w2003r2.vmsd file if it exists.
- Right-click on the vmx file and select "add to the inventory.
- Open the virtual machine settings and uncheck the box "connect to power on" for the network card (only to make sure that the virtual machine does not connect to the network, where the snapshots are not in the right order)
- Important: Create a new snapshot, and to ensure that the new vmdk file is referenced in the disk of the virtual machine settings
Now you can try it without risk of turning the virtual computer and check if everything seems OK. I suggest that you take a look at the Windows event logs and check if the last entries are from the scheduled date. Because you have turned on on the VM from the file (flat) base, run 'chkdsk /f' for all readers to solve possible problems.
If this doesn't seem to be the right order, please report and I will edit the files to make snapshot 000001 the current.
Once everything is ok you should really consider deleting snapshots. To ensure that this does no new issues, please provide the build number of your hosts ESXi and the amount of free disk space on the data store!

I have deleted all THE files in my libraries FCPX rendering but have still 1.5 TB of unidentifiable used disk space. I don't have FCPX libraries on my 3 TB external drive. The total size of my libraries is 650 GB (when I add up the individual), but when I click on read the information for the reader, it says that I use 2 100 GB! It does not show that everything is on the disk. I went in each library individually in FCPX and deleted all THE files of rendering. Reducing the total size of several concerts, but there are still almost 1 500 GB difference.
I tried to copy all libraries on another drive and they occupy only 650 GB (with no unidentifiable used disk space). I'm a bit confused. Someone at - it ideas? I would like to release 1.5 TB that starting to use the new hard disk with only 650 GB and reformat the drive, but if there is some kind of hidden, important files on the original drive as FCPX needs to work properly I won't ruin the hundreds of hours I spent on editing. I hope that all makes sense. Thank you in advance.

The next step is to reconcile the total for 31 736 Mo C (say 31 GB) to the 51 GB what you said earlier. The formula to reconcile these figures is:
Partition C + folder System Volume Information + Free space + file compression gain = ability to drive or partitionThe figure of the free space are in the lower left corner of the Treesize window. What is the current figure.
To determine the size of the selection of folder System Volume Information start, Control Panel, system, System Protection, click Configure under Protection settings. What is the figure of the current use?

Former delta snapshot is not appearing in the Snapshot Manager
Hello
I have a few VMS with old delta of snapshot that does not show in the Snapshot Manager.
I followed the instructions provided by this KB: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1002310
Down, what is he saying
"Once the validation has been completed successfully, there is no -00000X.vmdk or -00000 X - delta.vmdk files left unless they were not part of the snapshot tree." These files can be deleted. To ensure that the validation was successful, find it out .vmx file, and then check that the virtual disks are now pointing to a basic disk (-flat.vmdk )." "
The virtual machine I have is still show the delta files. These delta seems to have pills of very old date compared to the rest of the files contained in the directory of the virtual machine.
I checked that the .vmx file points to the basic disk. I did it by checking the vmdk file reference by the attribute "... filename =".
So everything in this KB it seems to me that it is safe to delete the "orphan" of delta.
However, I just wanted to check to see if there are no further check I should do before deleting the orphans of the delta which mentions not maybe this KB?
Or maybe I missed an important step! I'm still learning VMWare, so I don't know the ropes yet.
Thank you
See you soon

Hi all
I copied a file from one place vmdk and try to make a new virtual machine with this vmdk file. But when I turn on after the creation of vm error is coming. Error in the text and the image below
Power on the virtual machine: cannot open scsi0:0 disc: disc not supported or not valid type 7. Ensure that the disk has been imported.
See the error of the stack for more details on the cause of this problem.

vCenter Server: vcsa
Error stack
An error was received from the ESX host turning on DBServer VM.
Unable to start the virtual machine.

Could not open scsi0:0 disc: disc not supported or not valid type 7. Ensure that the disk has been imported.
This error message generally if the hard files have been copied hosted as VMware Workstation product, which uses a format of sparse file that is not supported on an ESXi host. Instead of the hard copy, you can use VMware Converter, or - if you prefer - you can convert the hard using vmware-vdiskmanager (before transfer) or vmkfstools (after downloading). I deal to use vmkfstools you will need to load the mutliextent module (see for example "Clone or migration operations involving virtual discs non-VMFS on ESXi fail with an error" vSphere 5.1 Release Notes)

Check orphaned vmdk files are not used before deleting
Hi all
I'm working on a site and after looking through the vSphere platform, it came to light that there are THOUSANDS (well more than 10,000) of orphaned VMDK files, it seems that there is a bug in the backup solution (you think).
In any case I was hoping someone could help me please do you know if there is a way to confirm that a vmdk is certainly not necessary, the tools I've used to identify the orphaned VMDK are the script here practically Jason: orphaned VMDK files and RV tools (health tab).
What I need to do now is to automate the removal of the VMDK if possible, but I need to run a test of consistency first to ensure that the files are actually orphans.
Any help or advice greatly appreciated.
Hello
I can give you only a few rough concepts and advice because I do not know the details.
First, he yells for PowerCLI, below, you will get a few commands. If you are not familiar with PowerCLI/Powershell I highly recommend to get a grip on it.
Second, I'll assume that orphaned files = unused files. If this isn't the case, you can rename/move file instead of delete and wait as these phone calls / tickets
Thirdly, since we will work on files on data warehouses, we will use "vmstores" PSDrive. Get-PSdrive cmdlet will give you all the readers, that you, one of them is vmstores
C:\Windows\system32> Get-PSDrive Name Used (GB) Free (GB) Provider Root CurrentLocation ---- --------- --------- -------- ---- --------------- Alias Alias C 52,39 44,97 FileSystem C:\ Windows\system32 Cert Certificate \ D 218,60 149,80 FileSystem D:\ E FileSystem E:\ Env Environment Function Function HKCU Registry HKEY_CURRENT_USER HKLM Registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Variable Variable vi VimInventory \LastConnectedVCenterServer vis VimInventory \ vmstore VimDatastore \LastConnectedVCenterServer vmstores VimDatastore \ WSMan WSMan
To get your typical data warehouse 'cd ":
CD vmstores:\your_vcenter\your_cluster
On each level, you can do 'ls' or 'cmd '. Tab completion works on everything in order to use it
From now on, all depends on what you already have and what it looks like. These files have a naming pattern names containing the name of the virtual machine or other information ("backup", "tmp" etc.)? You have these names stored somewhere? In text or csv file?
I guess you have the list of files in the text file. So much more simple method would be to be scan all data warehouses and all files. As you can imagine it is very time and resource consumption, so not recommended to all
#we're importing filenames to variable $oldfiles = Get-Content your_text_file.txt cd vmstores:\your_vcenter\your_cluster $oldfiles | ForEach-Object { #we're recursivly looking for file stored in $_ special variable (current object) $deleteme = Get-ChildItem $_ -Recurse #deleting the file Remove-Item $deleteme.PSPath }
If the file names that you already can somehow correspond directly to the VM, then we could use a more intelligent approach.
Let's say we have the testVM001 - bak003.vmdk and VMname file is testVM001. We can remove all characters after the 9th tank and then work on it:
#we're importing filenames to variable $oldfiles = Get-Content your_text_file.txt $oldfiles | ForEach-Object { #getting VM name $vmname = $_.Remove(9) #getting VM path $vmpath = (Get-VM -Name $vmname |Get-Datastore).DatastoreBrowserPath #combining full path $fullpath = $vmpath + "\" + $vmname cd $fullpath #deleting the file Remove-Item ./$_ }
These are simple ideas, it could be useful.

What problems can I hire after cleaned?

If your PC behaves properly, you can remove the hidden Windows hotfix backup files that start with $NTUninstallKB to the WINDOWS folder. There are two ways to do:
A. manually, but copy files on a CD/DVD first to enable their restoration has a fix must be removed thereafter. Now delete the folder \WINDOWS, but leaves the orphan entries to add / remove programs intact. Remove only the $NTUninstallKB files that relate to corrections, not those for applications such as Word, WMP, etc.. In addition, DO NOT DELETE THE folder$ $hf_mig.
B. my preference goes to run a script that also removes the corresponding entries in Add / Remove programs. Once they are deleted by the script, they cannot be restored. Download, extract and run this little scripthttp://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_hotfix_backup.htm creating a system restore point first just in case something goes wrong when the update of the register.
