I get the message asking me what program I want to use to open the program
When I'm online and I try to change the programs, such as clicking 'send' or any change of clock, I will get a window with about 6 choices that says: "what program you want to use to open this program" no matter which one I try, I got nowhere. This all started 4 months ago. How can I get rid of this nuisance.
Thanks, Dan

My system has developed a strange (and annoying) issue that no longer allows me to double click on the shortcuts of programs or EXE files. When I do, I give myself a menu asks me what program I want to use to open the file, as if I was trying to open a file with an extension that is not associated with.
The only way to get all the programs to run more is to right click on the shortcut and select "Run as Administrator".
Right click on the shortcut also reveals a new 'momentum' (Yes, spelled with one S tiny) option in the menu. I have not tried it works, in my view, it could be related to some false recently-removed security software that appeared out of nowhere last night.
Any help to remedy this situation and get back to normal functionality would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
If program shortcuts are not no longer works, you will need to use a procedure special difficulty fo files .lnk (similar to the one used above with .exe files).
Go to http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/06/22/reset-and-fix-broken-windows-vista-file-ext-and-type-associations-include-exe-com-sys-zip-lnk-folder-drive/ and select the .lnk and run it. That should fix your shortcuts. Or you can use the link provided above by Michael Murphy - it does essentially the same thing.
I hope this helps.

Hi, in case of doubt, to check updates, open the 3-bar menu > help (question mark below on the right) > on Firefox.
It is possible that the notification is from your McAfee WebAdvisor extension, you can try to disable if you wish (Ctrl + Shift + A to open the Add-ons Manager).
If your question is resolved by this or another answer, please take a minute to let us know. Thank you.

I started having trouble opening all my programs... A 'Open with' box appears only the message "choose the program you want to use to open this file: file: * .exe ', and I only have two choices, either Microsoft Office OneNoteQuick Launcher or Wordpad... Internet Explorer is the only exception it opens when I click on Cancel.
