  Shane: I called technical support today at HP as you suggested.  The technician only quoted me the same driver, I tried to install and have problems with getting my printer to print.   He said that they allow to continuously improve the driver files and try the installation again from time to time.

  I couldn't find much information about the program. In addition, the Windows 7 Compatibility Center doesn't have any information about this as well. It seems to be a fairly old program that is not compatible to be used with Windows 7.

  You can try to install in Windows 98 compatibility mode and see if it makes a difference.

  a. right click on the installation file (setup.exe for the software), and then select Properties.

  b. now, click on the Compatibility tab and check the box that says run this program in compatibility mode for.

  c. Select Windows 98/Windows Me. Click on apply and OK.

  d. now right-click on the configuration file and select run as administrator and follow the normal installation procedure. Check if you can install the program now.

  You do this using a technique called "slipstreaming".  You start with a genuine XP installation CD and add in the necessary service packs and updates.

  If your CD-ROM is sp1 or 1A, you can just slipstream sp3.  If you have XP 'or' (pre - sp1), it is more complicated.

  There are many websites that explain how to do this.  Google for "slipstream sp3 of xp" or something similar.

  This site claims to have a script that will create a slipstreamed XP sp3 and all post-sp3 CD critical updates (description wrongly "sp2").  I the have not used and do not have any information on how easy it is or if she actually does what it says.
