  I worked on a work around for this customer which was to remove Office 2003. Once I removed the office, all other udates Windows worked without any problems. At this point, you can mark this problem as answered.

  Finally, I was able to get good support from Microsoft. A Microsoft support engineer remotely connected to my machine and was able to fix the installation/update directories corrupted microsoft who were at the origin of the problem. I managed to install office with success and things are back to normal. I had given up hope after my original support request (2 weeks back) and the first experience with the customer. But MS technical support engineers (the less one that helped me yesterday) seem to have a good idea of what was going on and was able to solve my problem quickly. Thank you MS support

  Have you looked to see if your motherboard has a BIOS update available?

  I have personally had updated the BIOS on my motherboard during the upgrade from my old i7 920 quad-core CPU for an i7 960 hexa-core CPU.  The motherboard wouldn't even POST after upgrading the CPU without BIOS flash first, it might be interesting to try.  It might be better to install the old CPU and make sure that everything is working normally before flashing the BIOS.

  I strongly recommend to back up important documents to an external storage device before you attempt this, since there is always a risk when you perform upgrades to your hardware.  In addition, please take care to follow the instructions exactly as directed.  You wouldn't want an as the result of this expensive paper weight...: o

Ive uninstalled my DVD drive & reinstalled after startup & has nothing there is never, ever a update for my via DriverBooster, DriverScanner or my in-kind Assistant from HP DVD drive & I used a certain programs to update my driver (Driverbooster, DriverScanner etc.). NEVER. If HP can give me a BIOS update, why not send me a DVD Player update through me HP Support Assistant HP?  Well, I think this is a time of combat that HP should create an update to solve all the problems of DVD rather than depend on Microsoft to fix it. If my DVD drive was well Windows I would use the microsoft Fixits, but since it is a HP DVD drive, I think HP should solve the problem, not Microsoft.

  What you see in the Device Manager is the driver control for the dvd player, what are you really need to look at is the version of the firmware on your dvd player & see if a newer firmware is available.

  Usually many even intermittent faults are more material than firmware, readers are very cheap but & can access a job of 2 minutes to replace if necessary more you a better quality disc & spec as you wish.

  I think KH21 is new firmware for this dvd player.

  Have you tried to install the updates manually?  If this isn't the case, I would start by doing this.  Click Start > all programs > Windows Update > view update history; Double-click a update failed, and then click the link under "More information."  This should take you to a page on this update and the file available for download.  You can then save on your system and run it manually by simply double-clicking it.  Alternatively, you can perform a clean boot before installing.
