  Sounds like you just disable the tabs. It was a novelty, and not everyone welcomed it. Go to general Preferences and disable the option to open new documents in a new tab.

  I think I have it solved. I never heard the term "Middle click" but I push down on the roller on my mouse thing and it grew up from the other version.
