I wipe my hard drive.

I want to start with my custom PC. What concerns me is after I do a Disk Wipe I will be able to reinstall my Windows xp Pro without having to buy a new key?

Comments and or advice will be appreciated.

You have the product key associated with your current installation?  If you have custom built PC, without doubt that you have installed a copy of XP retail.  If this is the case, then Yes, you can reuse your product key if you install the same version of XP that you did originally (Home, Pro).

If you used a retail installation CD but lost the key, an instance where the key finder like Magical JellyBean Keyfinder tools will find the correct key for you.

If it has been a while, online activation will probably work OK. Otherwise, you will have to do it by phone.

Be sure to get the necessary drivers and a current Installer for a good antivirus application before you begin.  Install your antivirus software before connect you to the Internet.

See the tips of long date MS MVP PA Bear. Choose the section corresponding to the question if your XP CD includes all service packs.  You can also create a CD slipstreamed with the necessary service pack.  IIRC, if you start with 'Gold' (i.e. without service pack at all) and so must the sp2 and sp3, you must make a first slipstreamed sp2 CD, and then use it as source for wake sp3 (i.e., do not both at once).  Google for a guide; they are many.

If you have saved your whole Documents & Settings (or 'Users' since Vista) then you have probably already what you need.

  • Request for BIOS password after trying to wipe the hard drive?

Hi - I got a new computer and tried to erase the hard drive on my old Toshiba laptop for sale on. It is a Toshiba A-210 and is about three years old.

I put the "settings factory restore disk" and tried to follow the instructions on the CD cover. However, the instructions don't match the options given, I did something where I thought I was wiping the HARD drive. It seemed to go ok, but when I tried to start it again, it loads a black screen type "MS-DOS" asking for a password.

The password only I put up on the computer was for my user profile, and it's not accept that. If I try to go on without the password, the computer turns off.

I tried Googling and it could be a BIOS password, I think, but I've never been one of these. The only suggestions I could find for fixing involved by pressing one of the buttons "F" and move to Windows, but I can't get an answer using the 'F' keys On the Toshiba site it said that I needed to have it fixed by one of their authorized places, but I don't want to spend money on it, because I was trying only to erase the hard drive before trying to sell it on or scrapping it.

Does anyone have any suggestions? My hard drive was erased? There is nothing really confidential there, but I like it as clear as possible, I really don't mind if its working, I would consider it breaks to pieces.

    Hello Katy

After reading your thread I don't understand what you've done to lock your computer.
Still is it BIOS password cannot be set by mistake.

When the BIOS password to settle should be written twice before, it will be activated.

What to do now? Is that the BIOS password can be deleted by a combination of keys or something simple. BIOS password is the most important safety feature and must offer the maximum protection of the BIOS.
You can sell your laptop without HARD drive too. On eBay, I saw many laptops that will be offered without HARD drive for data protection reasons. HARD drive can be exchanged for less money and it is not so important hardware component.

In the history I see a problem only: BIOS password. You can offer a little cheaper laptop and the new owner can pay for password removal.

It is not easy to give you the right answer. I just want to be a little more realistic.

  • Recovery disks will still work if I wipe the HARD drive?

Hey everybody! I have a quick question and I hope one of you can tell me if I'm about to make a huge mistake.

My HP Pavillion Dv6 had serious problems and chkdsk deleted a lot of clues. I worked on the problem of HARD drive and looks is not default (no bad sectors, only of weakness). I read that zero-filling can help with HARD drive problems.

My only question is that I don't know if I'll be able to just reinstall after I have zeros, because the building programs will be wiped. I have an application and Driver Recovery CD and a DVD of system recovery that I have used before. These will still work if I have zero filling? Or I need something else?

Thank you very much for your help!

    Sadie

    Hi Sadie,

Yes, your recovery disks will work if set you to zero the whole HARD drive (they would also work on a new HARD drive if you need to replace the existing one).

When reloading the operating system, you choose the "Factory Reset" option will reinstall the OS and recreate all the original scores.

  • How can I wipe old hard drive from the laptop of computer death without jeopardizing the new laptop?
