iCloud Drive and confusion of local storage

I'm quite confused on iCloud drive works. I had assumed that it could be used like any other option storage file, for example a connected locally external hard drive. But apparently not exactly. Here is my request:

I have a huge (hundreds of gigabytes) Aperture library. Since it is much larger than the storage available on the SSD in my Macbook Pro, I have it on a classic 1.5 TB external harddrive. But I want to save the library to a cloud off-site storage site so that if my house burns down, accidents of HD or someone steals, I have not lost anything. But as I copy files from my drive hard external to iCloud my internal SSD drive fills up completely and the backup finishes. It's a mystery to my as to why iCloud drive isn't teated by OS X like any other volume "attached" to which I can copy or download local files.

My first question, then, is it really how it is supposed to work? If so, my second question is: can someone explain the logic behind this behavior? My last question is: is there some way that I can install iCloud drive on both , my external hard drive and my drive internal, but both have the same account iCloud?

Thanks in advance for all advice and counsel.

iCloud is a synchronization system, not an external storage system. If you delete them from the computer/device they will be deleted to iCloud. The files are stored locally on your hard drive that you have discovered.

I can't explain the logic, but this is how it works.

Send feedback to Apple. They will not respond, but at least know that there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it can become the problem solved as soon as possible.

You can simply drag in iCloud reader, but I pass and move documents in their files app instead. It will probably take a while to download all documents.

It is not a way to sync without some third party software that synchronizes folders, or learn how to use rsync in the Terminal.

Instead of synchronization, simply use the iCloud drive in the 'Documents' folder after you move the files.

  • Confused about iCloud, iCloud Drive and save?

Hello everyone. In a bit of a difficult situation here, while in a fight with a friend of mine, they have permanently deleted all the photos of us. We want these memories back and it turns out that she has pictures enabled in iCloud and also the iCloud drive. She got an iPhone 6s. I don't know what this means or how to work with it, but could you please tell me how can she retrieve photos with the icloud? A maybe need a ripping software? Something will help you! Thank you.

    iCloud is not a backup,

But it can browse iCloud.com and connect on the photos to see if they are there. If they are not looking for and in the recently deleted folder. Other than that you have no real backup.

Yes, according to iCloud Drive FAQ - Apple Support:

You cannot use iCloud Drive on your devices until you update your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch to the latest version of iOSand your Mac to the latest version of Mac OS X. If you already upgraded and you need to use a device that does not support iCloud by car, you can still work on your documents locally, but they will not be aware of the documents on your devices up to date, or on iCloud.com.

In addition, the system requirements for iCloud - Apple Support should be useful.

  • How to configure and use the local storage dirve and usb

My company bought a server DMM cisco as well as 10 players of 4310 g dmp.  I tried to work on mine here to get it all working.  Let me expose what we would do first before to get into the details.

The cental DMM will it play any content and be used to create and manage the content here at company wehre I am.  However my boss wants to send dmp individual players (4310 g) out to our factories across the country.  He wants me to be able to creat content or allow a person managing the exact address to edit the content and then push the content from the server DMM to corporate local DPM record either on local storage or attached thumb order.  I guess my questions on what are the following.

    (1) is it necessary to push the content locally for playback?  Willingness to play the content of our dmm on the wan to do lots of traffic?  Presentations could be as simple as a welcome page based presentation playing images video and flash.

    (2) based on local content would be a wise decision I'll have to see exactly how this is done poorly.  In the settings of the dmp, I see the setting of local storage and turned it on and set to read/write.  In regard to the command of thumb gose exactly how I implement that so that DPM can see?  I plug to the back of the drive, and it seems that it is active but the management console of the player I don't see anyway to actaully see if she knows the USB.

    (3) how will push the content for local storage and control of the DMM thumb?  It looks like I can send things to the storage internal if package transfer and or advanced/DPM deployment tasks or server file.  What exactly is the difference between these two?

    (4) Lastly how I actually play the local content of the dmp?  Can I set this up on a schedule of the dmm just like I would if he played the local dmm?

I searched through the documentation, but I have not found any good docs who are clear to actually how to do these things.  So, any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Glen,

Here are the answers to your questions

    1) is it nessesary to push the content locally for playback?  Will  playing content from our dmm over the wan be to much traffic?   Presentations could be as simple as a basic welcome page to a  presentation playing video and flash images.

It is not required to push the content locally, you can also play the DMM directly. The main advantage of playing on the spot, is that you can transfer the videos several hours or days before the presentation begins to be played if you deploy content off hours and then, when he's ready to start playing the new presentation.

If you play directly the content of the DMM, the content will be transferred at the time of the DMP starts playback. This may fail if the WAN link is saturated at that time here.

    2) If pushing the content local would be a wise decision I am having  difficulty seeing exactly how this is done.  In the dmp settings I see  the local storage setting and have it turned on and set to read/write.   As far as the thumb drive gose how exactly to I set that up so the dmp  can see it?  I plug it in the back of the player and it looks like it's  active but from the management console of the player I do not see any  way to actaully see if it knows about the usb thumb drive.

You don't need to do anything to enable USB storage, simply plug it in. To confirm that the DMP is able to see it properly, the simplest way is to connect to the DPM via FTP and confirm that he has a «usb_2» directory This "usb_2" directory, where is the USB drive is mapped.

    3) how will I push the content to the local storage and the thumb drive  from the DMM?  It looks like I can send things to the internal storage  though the advanced tasks/deployment package and or file transfer to DMP  or server.  What exactly is the differnce between these two?

The task of "File transfer" will just do this, transfer a file to the DMP. The deployment package is smarter and will transfer all the contents of a presentation and organize them in a structure that can be used to read the content locally. You should always use the deployment package.

    4) finally how will I actually play the content from the local dmp?  Can  I set this up on a schedual from the dmm just like I would if it was  playing from the local dmm?

Yes, she may be scheduled as any other presentation.

I suggest you have a look at the link below. He explains the steps required to configure the deployment package and read the content deployed with it.

    http://www.Cisco.com/en/us/docs/video/digital_media_systems/5_x/5_2/DMM/user/guide/DMP/CDs.html#wp2188026

I hope everything is clear now, but if you have any questions, let me know. I'll try to answer.

  • vMotion and Shared vs Local storage

    Greetings to all

It does not say much on the local storage in my book by Lowe.

In fact its as if no one is using to vSphere5 without an external storage array any.

It indicates that 'the shared storage' is required for vMotion.

But I when I talked to a vMWare engineer said he local storage will work as a shared storage.

Kind of confused here. I saw that this mentioned anywhere.

We have two new servers Dell with ESXi5.

    They have discs SAS6 6 x 300 G each. It's our storage.

We want the ability to run vMotion between these two servers.

Can it be configured to be a storage shared in vCenter Server or when you add a virtual machine?

  • Why finder hide Documents and office files in the home directory of the user by activating iCloud drive? What about the behavior of Time Machine backup or third-party applications?

I'm under MacOS Sierra. I am connected to my iCloud account. I activated the option Desktop and Documents, but I did NOT activate the option optimize Mac storage, because I wanted to make sure that all my files would be available locally, just in case, I would need to work without an internet connection.

-J' noticed there now a menu iCloud in my sidebar in the Finder, with links to Documents and desktop.

-J' also noticed that Documents is no longer presented in my favorites in my side bar of the Finder.

-This last suggests that files saved in 'Documents' are not saved more on my HD... but only in iCloud, which isn't what I want.

-Then, sailing in the Finder Macintosh HD/users / 'My account' /, I noticed that my Documents and desktop folders are more visible, as if these files are not saved in my home folder most. Which raises the question: where are My Documents and files on my HD, so they are still?

-Using a shell session in the terminal and again navigate to/Users / 'My account' /, I noticed that my Documents and desktop folders are still there. Which suggest that records and records of office reside actually still in my home folder under users, but Finder actually hide it and present them as being stored in iCloud only disc. It's very confusing.

    This raises several questions:

-In the first place, why Apple hide Documents and office files in the directory? Why not view these folders in iCloud and directory?

-Whence the iCloud folder or drive, reside actually on my hard drive?

-What time Machine. Is it still back up my document files and folders?

-What games third-party app mirroring backup of My Documents files and folders? They still work properly? (I use Livedrive backup and Sugarsync for files mirrored across several macs).

-How can I understand that Apple is doing with my folders and files? Some users might be happy with the iCloud drive concept, without worrying about how it works, but I don't take chances, and I want to keep a good understanding about the functioning of my system.

Could someone explain what is exactly happening?

With office and selected Documents, access to these files are now in the iCloud Drive, not in your home folder.

My guess would be that they do not appear in your file because it would be confusing for many people to make them in two places.

If you want in the Favorites, open iCloud Drive and drag them in the sidebar here.

All about iCloud drive has been saved on your Mac. With the exception of the office and the Documents, they are in ~/Library/Mobile Documents. However, if you choose optimized storage, older documents are removed from your Mac. I don't know what is "old".

~/Documents and ~/desktop have new metadata indicating probably Finder does not display them in a Finder window, only in iCloud drive. They are not hidden in one of the normal methods of unix.

I have not tested Time Machine or any other backup program. The folder still exist in your directory home, and they still have all the files, I don't think that changes anything.

  • iCloud Desktop Drive and Documents folders

Just updated to Sierra and thought, it would be a nice feature to be able to back up desktop and Documents folders to iCloud. However, this isn't really what he does... Instead it moves to your desktop and Documents folders to iCloud Drive. Using your desktop and Documents folders disappear favorites. Likely, it erases the hard disk space, but this isn't what I wanted. I wanted to work on my files on my hard drive and for these to be synchronized / mirror in iCloud. As I don't do real work on the files in these folders on any other device than my MacBook Pro, having these files available by other devices was not important to me.

    Now my questions are:

    (1) Will Time still Machine back up these two folders which are now in the cloud?

    (2) if I want to recover these files on my hard drive (my computer > users > user My > Documents/Desktop), what is the best way to proceed?

    (3) is there a clever way to use iCloud in the way I intended?

    Hello tormod v.,

Thank you for your question about iCloud Drive and Sierra here in Apple Support communities. I understand how iCloud is important, and how the features can sometimes confusing, especially when things like the new macOS Sierra and iCloud combing Drive.

The first thing we want to make sure is that all your data is safe. You can perform a backup using Time Machine and an external hard drive. Some people recommend an external hard drive twice the size of your internal hard drive, because finally he fills with the backups, but as long as you have a car large enough to store all the data currently on your Mac that will suffice. Use this article to help make a backup of your Mac: use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac. To answer your first question, now that these files and folders are in iCloud drive, those who will be saved differently and separate Time machine. To do this, please open this help article: Archive or make copies of your data to iCloud under the first section, titled 'the Documents and files of the iCloud drive '. You will need to download them to the computer again and then make a Time Machine backup, display instructions.

To get these files on your desktop, go ahead and disable the function of the iCloud drive option in system preferences. Then, after the warning, go ahead and drag and drop your iCloud Drive, return to your computers local documents files and/or folders of office. Move this disk to iCloud files and put them on your computer.

You last question has been answered by yourself and the article I post above to make an archive or copies of your data to iCloud. iCloud and iCloud drive aren't backups. Yes, you can make backups of iOS and save them in iCloud, but to perform a live backup of all your files and folders, they must be located on the internal hard drive or external hard drive connected to your Mac, and that external hard drive is not excluded from backups in the preferences of Time Machine.

Thanks again and have a great rest of your day.

  • Turn off sync to iCloud drive to specific folders?

I have some files I've downloaded to iCloud Drive, which I rarely opened.

I know than iCloud Drive intelligently synchronizing files that I rarely opened, but is it possible for me to:

    1. mark a specific folder in iCloud drive to not synchronize my devices? I think that this as a feature of "cold storage"?

2 interrupt synchronization to iCloud drive everything as I interrupt iCloud Photos on Mac?

Since I'm in an environment where the internet speed is very limited and I often uses mobile wifi (MiFi) whereby data is very expensive, so I need to manage the synchronization manually by myself. I also want to save precious space on my MacBook Pro SSD, this is why I need this feature of "cold storage" in the cloud.

Note: This tip below might work for the interruption of synchronization, but y at - it another way to interrupt synchronization?

How suspend you iCloud drive sync?  It is using all of my mobile data!

My environment: 13 "2015 retina MacBook Pro installed in El Capitan, iPhone running iOS 9.3.5 6.

    Thank you.

Right now, iCloud drive will be synchronized snapshots of documents and data from your Mac.

macOS Sierra will bring changes to this.  See the preview.   Preview - Apple macOS

You will be able to use "Optimize storage" for iCloud Drive and include your desktop and Documents folder in iCloud drive.  Then you can choose to keep only the document new and used recently, all the old files and data locally in the cloud.

Get ready for the update on 20 September.
