iMac 27 in. storage upgrade

I plan to buy an iMac 27 in. (end of 2015).  The 1 TB SSD is definitely the best option of upgrade of storage?

Better to do what?  How do you plan on using the iMac?  The other options are possible within your budget?

  • mid-2010 iMac slower afer is upgraded to El Capitan

    Hi all

I ran EtreCheck (thanks Allan!); details below.

Also ran AHT & it showed no problems

I installed an SSD in December machine considered fast - then installed El Capitan and he slowed, & I think it's gotten worse in recent weeks.

    Symptoms:

    • delays of beach ball
    • Some applications and files are very slow to open
    • using bluetooth keyboard & mouse - cursor seems to get hung up in emails, etc. (& same jumps around tasks randomly once in a while - JUST started using the mouse & keyboard cable; so far, not sure they are better.)
    • using iCloud for most documents.  The files are slow to open, but Cnet speed test shows that 20-30 MB/s download speed.

I do not know is that a "clean install", but I had no problem (obvious) El Cap installation.

With the SSD and 20 GB of RAM, this machine should always work for some time, Yes?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and advice.

    David

The only obvious thing that I see is that your RAM is installed incorrectly. It should be in pairs, your is wrong in pairs. The Bank 0 and Bank 1 should have identical RAM installed.   You also have a very old version of Parallels installed. If you use Windows yet then upgrade of Parallels and if you uninstall according to the developers.

  • Trackpad will not iMac pair 2009 after upgrade to El Capitan

After the upgrade to El Capitan on a 27-inch late 2009 iMac I'm more able to match a trackpad from Apple.  The trackpad works properly, because it pairs with a newer iMac.  Any ideas?

If it is associated with something else, delete it from here. Bluetooth devices can only be associated with one thing at a time.

  • iMac 14.2 HDD upgrade SSD external / internal

I have an iMac of end of 2013 with a 1 TB HARD drive. I'm looking to upgrade to a Samsung SSD, because I believe that the HARD drive is really slow. I have searched online for the best solution for this.

Does anyone have the answers to the following questions:

How it would effect the speeds, if my boot drive has been installed on an external SSD and internal HDD is used to store files?

An external SSD Thunderbolt would be faster than USB 3.0? Where's the best price to buy these items?

How Apple charge for this upgrade? What's hard to do it yourself with the right kit from OWC, bearing in mind I have some experience by removing the PC? http://www.megamac.com/Collections/Components/Products/OWC-Digital-Thermal-Senso r-with-installation-tools-for-imac-27-20...

I really feel the drive HARD don't disappoint the computer and with the benefit of hindsight, I would have been for a different option.

Any ideas would be very appreciated.

I use an external Thunderbolt sled made by Seagate for a single SSD. Around $140, I think. Search on Amazon. I/O speeds are almost that of a flash drive SSD internal.

How to use an SSD with your HARD drive

If you want to use an SSD as boot with your existing HARD disk drive, as the disk 'data', here is what you can do.

After installing the SSD, you need to partition and format the SSD using disc utility disc. Then install OS X on the SSD. Once installed OSX boot from SSD. Startup disk preferences to set up the SSD as the boot volume.

Open the preferences users and groups. Click the lock and authenticate you. Or CTRL - RIGHT click on your username account list in the sidebar and select Advanced Options in the context menu. You will see a field called "Home dir: ' on the far right, you will see an Edit button. Click on it. In the file dialog box, navigate to the location in house now located on the HARD disk (disk HARD/users/user_name /.) Select the folder, click the Open button. Restart the computer, as shown. When the computer starts, it will now use the home located on the HARD drive folder.

Another more technical method involving the Terminal and the alias is discussed in depth here: using OS X with a SSD and HDD - Matt Gemmell configuration. It's my preferred approach because I can choose which records of the House, I want to on the HARD drive and I don't want to. For example, I like to keep Documents and library files on the SSD because I frequently access their content.

Make sure that you keep the bootable system entirely on your HARD drive where you need it.

  • iMac G5 a1058 17 "- upgrades - need help"

I have an iMac G5 a1058 8.1, which gave me

I am awaiting delivery of an upgrade to 2 GB ram and when I installed what I want to do a fresh installation of factory.

She has had an upgrade to leopard, but want to wipe the hard drive and do a fresh install of leopard - I have 2 drives, it said installation DVD, the other says upgrade dvd. It has already installed a bunch of software I'm not bothered about keeping or may re - install later, but I don't want to keep is garage band as after the installation of the OS I install Ableton 9.1 as this will mainly be used as a music machine (where why I want to keep Garage Band.

I learned Garage Band came with ilife, but can't seem to find a disk or the original disks tiger that accompanies it.

    SO, let's here the questions...

Can I use the installation dvd to format the new drive, then install leopard?

How can I transfer iLife and specifically the band garage located on the Mac now for the new installation?

I want to improve the 80 GB drive mounted at least 1 preference to a disc ssd hybrid 7200

will I need some kind of adapter fit that drive 3.5 in the G5?

There the mounted hard disk size limitations?

    Brand recommendations?

I just had my 2nd WD die on me so I'm them avoid! Seagate seems a reasonable option...

    Thanks in advance

I'll make sure I have a Time Machine current backup before doing anything.

Then Yes you must use the installation DVD to format the drive. Then you can install the operating system. After that, you can restore from the backup Time Machine as you wish.

BTW, I asked the moderators to move this discussion to the discussion area "iMac (PPC).

  • HP ENVY 17 t-j100 storage upgrade Question

    Hi all

Looking at the 17 t-j100 with these specifications. On sale for July 4 at a nice price. My only hesitation is not being sure what upgrades of storage are simple, feasible and cost-effective in this configuration.

    Data sheet:

    Hello

1 SSD is cheap worm now. I don't know why many providers still put new machines with HARD 5400 RPM disk. I bought a 960 GB SSD from Crucial for less than $500. It is very good but not the best in terms of price/performance,

    2. 16 GB is the way we go with more graphic work,

    3. cloning is the best option, it will save a lot of time from top to bottom. Pay about $15 more you can get a package of Crucial and it works very well. There are a few free products of cloning:

    http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-drive-cloning-software.htm

    Kind regards.

  • XPS 15 9550 - Storage upgrade Question

If I buy a new XPS 15 9550 pre-configured with a PCIe of 256 GB Solid State Drive and the small battery, a HD caddy will be included so that I can add a 2.5 drive "later?

I found this on Reddit about the second HD.  Kind of a process ridiculous to install something that the machine was made to accept.

    "

So I only this post to help clear what is involved in the installation of a 2.5 drive "in the new XPS 15. I had the model 9550 with the small 56whr battery and 256 GB PCIE SSD, intending to install a 500 GB 2.5 "Evo 850 for extra storage. Like others, I found the little sata cable to do this, has not been included, so I did a lot of digging for info. I understand that most this info is somewhere out there scattered on other posts, but here's what you need to know in one place:

    1. Models of PCIE SSD of XPS 15 do not come with the cable required to connect a 2.5 drive sata ".

    2. I bought a Dell official cable sata laptop off of Ebay, hoping it would allow me to plug the drive 2.5 "hard. I installed it into the laptop and the fit snug on the motherboard, but with this cable connector is connected, the laptop lights. Numbers of reference cables has been dc02c005s00.

    3. I contacted Dell and they confirmed that I needed a special sata cable (even in the shape and the design that I bought, to be just different wiring) which was designed just for this laptop. The cable you need for a 2.5 drive "is the XDYGX part number.

    4. I contacted the sales parts & accessories Dell, and they placed a special order for this cable. It is not just available on the Dell store, you must communicate with their parts for her Department. They charged me $9.99 for cable, with free shipping.

Maybe this will help clear up some confusion regarding the necessary cable to add a 2.5 drive to the new XPS 15. Once more the part number of the cable you need from Dell is XDYGX.

Let me know if you have any questions I would be happy to help you!

    See you soon. "
