  Hi I just got a time capsule airport which I backed up on my iMac.  I have an external seagate HD plugged on my mac via USB.  I have a catalog photo large library and adobe lightroom on the external hard drive I use and change almost every day. These files are NOT stored on my computer because they take so much space that I would like to keep the separate external disk.  It was my hope to keep a backup on my time capsule on a regular basis with my backup of the iMac.  I have time machine configured to backup from my mac, and then under options, I have seen the drive seagate showing as excluded.  I removed excluded readers and click Save.   The Seagate disk should be in Mac Mac OS extended (journaled)format, also known as HFS +, if you want that Time Machine to back up your Mac.

  Do you know how the Seagate drive is formatted?  If it isn't... . Right click on on the icon of the Seagate drive which is mounted on the Mac desktop, and then click read the information. In the window that appears, look for the Format.

  Your android slate will not recognize a hard drive that is formatted as NTFS. It will recognize the FAT32 and exFAT formats.

  An external hard drive must be powered externally. Do not expect the micro-USB port to power an external hard drive or an SSD.

  While HP does not support Apple products, there are tons of tutorials online on how to import photos from an iPhone to Windows.

  There is nothing special, that you should have to do to connect the two together.

  It is possible that the USB 1.1 and not 2.0 ports that can explain the problem.  In addition, sometimes USB ports out enough power to run an external device that is not powered separatelly.  I don't know if updating the BIOS will help, but if there is an update available for your system (and it MUST be for your system - big bad can occur if you install the wrong BIOS so get with the computer manufacturer, and speak to a representative to confirm that they are appropriate for your system AND your version of Vista) then by all means install it and see if that solves the problem.  You can also get the updated drivers for the motherboard manufacturer, at the same time and see if that helps as well.

  Have seen others try this and fail miserably. I also saw a few attempt to copy on USB stick with the same end result.

  Save yourself a lot of grief and borrow or buy a USB CD/DVD drive.

  I have a HP Pavilion P6635UK (using windows 7 home) that I have used with an external drive WD successfully for several months.  Now, he does not appear to recognize the external hard drive.

  I think I can solved this problem by myself (with a little research in the WD support forum)

  Go to start, right click on computer, select manage, select disk management. The next column on the left will show all readers with their corresponding letter. My external hard drive doesn't show any letter entrusted to him. Right-click on where the drive letter should appear and select the path and change the drive letter. Select any letter you wish to call, and then click OK.
