Import XML in InDesign Table

I'm creating a template file in InDesign for a program of the event which is formatted in tables in InDesign.  The XML data is not in a table structure.  Is there anyway that I can import the XML data into a table in InDesign?

In the program given there are several sessions per day; so, ideally, I would like to create a table for the 1st session and then import the xml file and have the data flow in this same format for the other days of sessions in the program, each session with the same tags.  A table would be a single session.

Is this possible?

Thank you - Ashley

You're welcome, Ashley.

You can opt for XML files to add. They will be placed in the order that they are attached. The good news is that if you choose to bind all XML files, any modification of these individual XML files, once updated in ID, will have reflected changes only to this XML file. In other words, ID knows where each XML file is in the file of ID. The links Panel will show all XML files that have been changed. As soon as it has changed the file is updated, then we still have to apply the table style that he will return to a flat table, despite the style

For example, if... This XML file has the "incorrect" date

ID shows the XML file being edited. Once updated, only the changes to the XML file are recorded in the ID file:

Note that I didn't notice that this thread has been updated. I got to go get in the list of threads. If it appears I'm missing, feel free to PM me.

Take care, Mike

  • < a > tag is creating error importing XML in InDesign CS5.5

    Hi all

    I do InDesign CS2 to InDesign CS5.5 update.

    I have the indt file. It was designed by using the CS2 and now converted this file using InDesign CS5.5 CS5.5 indt.

    But I am facing a problem while making the export as pdf in version CS5.5.

    I'm following steps below:

    (1) indt open the file.

    2) menu file-> import XML... [This XML file contains < a href = "Web site link" > html tag]

    (3) [no change-defalut option selected] XML import options

    (4) ideally, it should merge XML data with the indt file but this is ask me for feedback and show me "search:" dialogue [below instant check]

    Error.IDCS5.5.JPG

    I did some research and know I get this dialog search because of the < a > tag XML. When I removed the < a > tag XML, then it gives no dialog and XML imported without any problems.

    I get this XML system and I can't manually delete the < a > tag of xml.

    However I was getting any error while making import XML in the CS2 version.

    Please can someone help with this?

    When there is "http://" in the anchor tag, it will jump to the top of this entry window manual indd/indt export to PDF and it will be failed in export by the action script.

    I contacted Adobe software and it was bug. Adobe has confirmed that they would be realease the patch for even some time later, but I have not heard anything. I got the job by removing "http://" using java.

  • Newlines when importing XML in Indesign

    I import XML files in an Indesign template. The content comes from an Access database via a Word macro that inserts the XML tags.

    Everything works well except line breaks (soft carriage returns). I tried vbLf and & #10;  but they both give a paragraph break, while < br / > does nothing. I could use a separate paragraph tag in Indesign without space before and after, but it's a pain for other reasons. Another way?

    Try & #x2028. This is defined in Unicode as 'Separator line.' reference

    It is a pity that InDesign offers us an easy way to determine these things. When I need to understand something like that, my first attempt to export InDesign isto and examine the result. But InDesign exports the forced line break as a UTF-8 character with a binary value of three bytes of E280A8 (rather than an entity reference). I'm still not quite clear how to get between E280A8 and 0 x 2028, but it should work...

    You try to call attributes on a table of client access licenses. As a cal, Indesign tries to draw as a result to the specification of CLIENT access licenses. Do not know a thing about aid attributes: cellstyle.

    So if you want to use these styles in a tahnks tbal of importing xml, you must use a more user-friendly table InDesign XML syntax.

  • Table do not create lines when importing XML

    Hello

    I loaded my XMl file tags.  I have a text box on my indesign document. I have the tag in the tag of the 'Net.  I then drew a table in the text box with 2 rows and 3 columns.  All cells in the table are marked for 'Cell '.  I then right click on the root-> element-> ReportData tag now when I import it then everything is as should be.  That is to say 2 rows with relevant information populated in all of all cells.

    I hoped to do was to create a table and specify only one line with 3 columns.  When I import the XML file, I was hoping that the aid: trows = "2" would create the extra line.  But this isn't the case.  Instead remains 1 row, but there are 3 additional columns that appear (IE 6 cells in row 1).  Someone tell me what I'm doing wrong please.

    Here is my XML

    <? XML version = "1.0" encoding = "UTF-8"? >
    "< produitLogiciels xmlns:aid ="http://ns.adobe.com/AdobeInDesign/4.0/"xmlns:aid5 ="http://ns.adobe.com/AdobeInDesign/5.0/">" "

    < aid: table = 'table' aid: trows = "2" aid: tcols = "3" >
    < aid5:cellstyle of cells = "Red banner" aid5:paragraphstyle = "Red banner" aid: pstyle = "Red banner" aid: table = 'cell' > NET returns of funds < / cell >
    < cell aid: table = 'cell' aid: ccolwidth = "130" > < / cell >
    < cell aid: table = 'cell' aid: ccolwidth = "130" > < / cell >

    < cell aid: table = 'cell' aid: ccolwidth = "130" > 56 < / cell >
    < cell aid: table = 'cell' aid: ccolwidth = "130" > 1 < / cell >
    < cell aid: table = 'cell' aid: ccolwidth = "130" > 42 < / cell >

    < /table >
    < / net >
    < / produitLogiciels >

    I think that your xml is working as you are wanting him for me. Take a look at the attached screenshot.

    Here's what I did (in CS4, BTW):

    1. Create a new document
    2. Rename the tag root of "ProduitLogiciels".
    3. Create a new tag named "NetFundReturns".
    4. Create a unique text on the page and tag with the tag "NetFundReturns".
    5. Import XML

    How is this different from what you were doing?

    Is it possible to import xml into Adobe Muse to fill the content similar to InDesign?

    The only way I see that this would be possible through the use of JS that you can insert by using the object-> the option Insert HTML code, you can retrieve the XML to the HTML from here - http://www.w3schools.com/xml/xml_to_html.asp

    In order to check this, simply download the sample XML file from the following location - http://www.w3schools.com/xml/cd_catalog.xml and save it somewhere locally. Now to add this file to your Muse project using the file-> add files to the download option, then it appears in the active panel.

    Add the code to your page and update the path that references the file cd_catalog.xml to assets/cd_catalog.xml. Now on the preview of the page in the browser, you should see the HTML populated from the XML.

    Thank you

  • InDesign, Import XML, switching to and from possible design multi-column?

    I have a question that may or may not require a script solution. I have a data source external generation text referenced XML file that I will not flow into a book. Normally, the book is a two-column layout, but there are illustrations (and sometimes pieces of explanatory text) which should cover both columns. I've built examples of use of reflow smart text for simple and updated column in multi-column page layout. Using one of these with the active smart text reflow works beautifully.

    Ideally, I would like to a XML tag that says "start spanning two columns now", inserts a large illustration (could also be a piece of text however) and another that says "return to normal 2 columns. I did a number of experiments (all unsuccessful) I can't seem to get a working solution. I really like the XML import, but if this is not possible, I'm willing to look at other approaches.

    Has anyone had a similar problem?

    As a gross illustration...

    Harold

    Just to be clear, when you say:

    I have a data source external generation text referenced XML file that I will not flow into a book.

    you mean import XML, not the import of text containing the tag of InDesign, correct?

    Ideally, I would like to a XML tag that says "start spanning two columns now", inserts a large illustration (could also be a piece of text however) and another that says "return to normal 2 columns. I did a number of experiments (all unsuccessful) I can't seem to get a working solution. I really like the XML import, but if this is not possible, I'm willing to look at other approaches.

    Can't you just a tag that maps to a paragraph style that allows to span columns?

  • Importing of XML in Indesign text friendly "carriage returns.

    Hello
    I have a question regarding the import of XML in Indesign.  I have my text stored in Excel (Fig A) and intend to export to an XML file, where each line will represent each page.  However, my first attempt failed process "cart returns" I had considered:
    "Carriage returns" used within a cell in Excel (ALT + ENTER) are preserved during the transformation to a CSV (fig. B).  However, when converting a file XML, the conversion takes place on a line-by-line, and therefore, the XML file becomes incomplete (Fig C).

    So it seems, I need to make sure that the CSV file contains one line per entry, while maintaining the real transport returns in my spreadsheet source and for Indesign to recognize.  To do this, I'll need to substitute "carriage returns" in my excel column to be represented by a new set of characters.  My question is how can I let Indesign can recognize this set of characters to be converted to a carriage return, importing text.
    For example, if the character set has been ' %% ', then my new csv file would look like Figure D and XML would be produced correctly, as the Figure E.  Then import this XML file into InDesign, return transport would be automatically restored, if all goes well.

    I hope someone can help me because I am only starting in Indesign and feel Im running until I can walk by embarking on the XML/Indesign arena too early.
    Best regards
    Luke

    No, I don't think.

    The fact is that ^ is a special character to find/replace.

    so you should either avoid its use in search strings to avoid confusion.

    or if you agree the confusion, you must use ^ ^ n to search for

    (instead of ^ n).

  • Problem with InDesign startup script does not import XML images

    I'm doing an XML import automatically from a startup script when a document is loaded. I managed to get most of the content to fill, but the images are ignored. Everything works, including images, when I do a manual 'Import XML' through the user interface or a manual script.

    Here's my manual script:

    var myDocument = app.activeDocument;
    var xmlFile = File('/c/Full/Path/To/data.xml');

    myDocument.importXML(xmlFile);

    But the goal is to do at startup. Here's my startup script:

    #targetengine "session"

    app.addEventListener('afterOpen', function(myEvent) {
       if (myEvent.target.constructor.name !== 'Document') {
       return;
       }

       var myDocument = myEvent.target;
       var xmlFile = File('/c/Full/Path/To/data.xml');

      myDocument.importXML(xmlFile);
    });

    Here is the XML tag for the image:

    <Image href="file:///C:/Full/Path/To/Image/02.png" />

    I wonder there is a problem with the 'afterOpen' event reminder, and it is the reason why it works manually using the same method, but not in the startup script.

    I solved it by avoiding the event quite listener:

    main();

    function main () {

        // create a path for a file object
        var curFile = File('/c/Path/To/file.indd);
        var xmlFile = File('/c/Path/To/data.xml');

        // close app if files don't exist
        if (!curFile.exists || !xmlFile.exists) {
            app.quit(SaveOptions.NO);
        }

        // open the file
        var curDoc = app.open(curFile);

        // import the xml
        curDoc.importXML(xmlFile);

        // create a new file object
        var pdfFile = new File(curFile.parent + '/' + curFile.name + '.pdf');

        // export to pdf
        curDoc.exportFile(ExportFormat.PDF_TYPE, pdfFile);

        // close app
        app.quit(SaveOptions.NO);

    }

Scrolling InDesign tutorials I see two possible ways to do so. First - turn required available (XSLT) our XML document to the accomplishment of IDML format. Secondly - create in InDesign something like a dummy document requirements of start-up Guard, and then import XML document mode "merge content", to InDesign, making previously structure and vocabulary of transformation (XSLT, once again) reason to match a representation of the data in InDesign.

    My questions like: where is the wiser? Is perhaps a third way, better than two mentioned? If I decided to build the IDML format directly from our native XML, could I find all the tools to help me do this?

    I would add, our structure of the content and you are looking for available are not simple. On the contrary, they are quite complex.

    Thanks in advance,

    Konstanty

    Interesting work. The XML seems to be very consistent and can be compared to the current PDF almost page-by-page.

    I noticed, it seems there are no ligatures used anywhere in the file PDF - not only to typical an' Th' Minion Pro, but not for the almost mandatory "fi" and "fl". (Of course, it could have been both a design choice.)

    A direct path to XML, IDML is very, very difficult. IDML is not the most user-friendly format! Through intermediaries and the design of the target looking at, I believe INX would serve much better!

    Other than IDML, an INX file is a single file, and you don't have to provide specific values for each element. In its simple form, just plain text as well as an indication of what paragraph style to use enough! But everything I see in the PDF file, including notes, should be possible as well.

  • Problems importing .inx in InDesign CS3

    Hello everyone,

    I'm Luana and I'm a translator. Has been for many years one of my clients send me the InDesign CS3 files to be translated.

    I export to .inx and import them in Trados, then, after translation, I re-imported the inx file in InDesign and save them. Always successfully!

    Now, I'm facing a problem: when importing inx. in InDesign, the last two pages document is empty, but they should not (there is text in there). The text is in, I don't know because I translated it, but unfortunately I can't view in InDesign, it is hidden.

    Do you know how to view again?

    Thank you in advance!

    Kind regards

    Luana

    Check the story editor view and search a text right after the indicator of excess. It's usually something preventing a break line that is too wide for the frame, a too big for the frame table cell, or a Dungeon option that prevents the text to appear.

  • Importing XML that contains more than 1 sheet

    Hi all
    I'm working on a book that will contain 100 chapters, each chapter contained in a double spread page, that's why the book will contain 200 pages.  My book is currently contained in an excel spreadsheet and my idea is to convert it to a CSV file, then to an XML file, allowing me to import in a paper previously prepared containing 100 chapters, each containing the same xml tags and accompanying character or paragraph style.
    I was so hoping that import the xml file would flow into its respective tags and have then each chapter filled accordingly.

    To test this concept, I tasted a simple worksheet with two rows of information, each representing a chapter.  The resultant csv and xml, I could import my chapter 2 InDesign document, but only one of the chapters is populated.  So I'm pretty sure I did something wrong but don't know where in the process I was wrong.

    That's what I did (ties are screenshots of my source spreadsheet, xml and indesign import chapter);
    (1) install a document with a registered master page, the master page is the chapter format.
    (2) xml tags added to the document, as well as the hierarchical structure of the element,
    (3) assigned the XML tags to its space reserved to the respective text/graphics in the master page frame, however do not tag the tags 'root' or 'topic' since these are not holders of text.
    (4) paragraph and character styles assigned to each xml tag. Then re-recorded the new page master xml-tabs.
    5) added another chapter (using my tab master xml)
    (6) saved the document.
    (7) then imported the XML file (ssheet convert csv and XML) in my document and the first chapter is filled with the correct information and no police etc., the second chapter.

    As Im new in InDesign and XML, I suspect that I've set up correctly.  Does anyone know where I am wrong, or if not, is there another way more effective to achieve (John Hawkinson has suggested that it would be more appropriate "Data fusion").
    Thanks in advance

    L

    PS. Site is not allowing me to upload images at the mo. Once able to download.

    Yes, I think you should use the fusion of data (with the CSV file) and forget XML.

    You will still need replace the newline characters, but you already know how to do this.

  • Import XML... vs .importXML [JS CS4]

    I am trying to import an XML file programmatically, but the results are not what I expected.

    For example, consider this file sample.xml

    < people >
    < person pid = "0" >
    < name > John < / name >
    < 54 > < / age >
    < date string "birthday" = >
    <>day 14 < / day >
    < month > may < / month >
    < year > 1956 < / year >
    < / date >
    < / person >
    < person pid = "1" >
    < name > Sally Smith < / name >
    ...

    If I run this code, importSample.jsx

    a new document has been already created by program
    myDocument var = app.documents.item (0);
    myDocument.xmlElements [0] .importXML (file (Folder.desktop + "/ sample.xml"));

    I get this:

    But if I use file > import XML format... I get this, which is what I want:

    The examples I find to import XML script are all the same - most of the results for the script turn own Adobe PDF guides. XML rules examples in the Guide to Scripting InDesign CS4 PDF (Javascript) uses similar XML format in his example, but requires it to be imported already. What I'm missing here?

    At this point, I'm happy to let the XML experts...

    I wasn't the copy of your XML file into a new file and run the script in two lines to import it. It seems a settings that you set in the full script it makes go Goo-Goo. Maybe you can remove a line at a time until it works... (a.k.a. "debugging by exclusion")

  • XML with Indesign!

    I'm trying to set up an automatic import of XML in Indesign. Here is a list of long products price. But so far, I try with a very short excerpt to see the result, and I do not get the desired result.

    I would like to know what to do in Indesign, in my case, in order to place the data correctly, or if you see my XML structure is not the ideal XML for Indesign document (it has attributes in addition to the tags), you could help me optimize it.

    Here are two screenshots that I made that illustrate my case:

    http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/4848/screenhunter01may230742.jpg

    Notice that the three lowest tags (product, our_price, retail_price) light up on the same line, and I separated them with tabs.

    Any help would be appreciated kindly.

    If an element is repeated in the XML, where repeated items simply reproduce at the same level in the structure, InDesign will be 'clone' its equivalent, in the relevant part of its structure. So as long as the number of repetition of elements in the XML file is "arbitrary" (rather than the level of these elements in the structure), InDesign will follow, without any additional direction. This will become clearer to you more you practice import XML.

    That's the best I can do - good luck with it - Jeremy
