Importing Photos iPhoto library

I watched the improvements coming from the Photos app for several months and I'm ready to take the plunge to move my 30 k iPhoto library more photos to Photos.  I do not use any storage cloud based. I have my iPhoto on my local disk library, saved on a disk external hard connected through time machine, as well as a complete copy on another external hard drive.  I spent a lot of time marking the faces; that is the most important for me and I want to make sure that they give.  What is the best way to get all my current iPhoto library metadata to the new photo library?

I know I ask a simple question, but I'm being too cautious with that.  Thanks for any help you can provide.

To migrate your iPhoto library to a library of Photos for the first time all you have to do is drag the icon in the Dock of Photos in the iPhoto library.  Who will migrate your iPhoto library to a library of Photos and place it in the same folder as your iPhoto library.  Should not be used twice the space on your hard drive for Photos uses hard links to access the photos used to create the iPhoto library.  These two documents describe how hard links work:

I use iphoto extensively for my company and I recently updated my OS to El Capitan and discovered that it didn't work anymore.  There was a note which directed me to download the latest version of the app store and when I did it it says there is no download available.

So I tried to go to the pictures.  I started the pictures and it prompted me to import my iphoto library, which is about 70 gigabytes.  Import ran for a long time and all images now appear in the Photos, but there is a problem.

Before the upgrade, when I downloaded photos in iPhoto, they went to a group and have been dated from and prepared accordingly. But I would add notes and/or descriptions so that when I entered a search for specific photos, they came to the top and I didn't need dates. Apparently, when photos have been imported into the new program, they are listed by date and descriptions are gone. Do you know if they're hiding, or if we can find them? Otherwise I have no idea where the first photos are and I have to visually through the 22 000 photos.

If not, is there a way to return to iphoto for El Capitan?

Apple sells iPhoto, is more then the tab update of the AppStore works is no longer.  You can update only by reinstalling, see user tip Barney:   cannot be updated iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store)

Apparently, when photos have been imported into the new program, they are listed by date and descriptions are gone.

Are the descriptions of the events?  If you open the sidebar with the albums, (enter the ⌥⌘S - command-option-S key combination), you will see a folder iPhoto events.  It will be an album for each of your events.

If you enter titles and captions for each photo, you will see them in the Panel information for each photo. Titles can also be displayed under thumbnails, if you enable it in the view menu > metadata.

  • How can I import my iPhotos library into the new application Photos?

My iPhoto library is on an external hard drive. When I try to import into the new application of Photos on my laptop, it is said that Photos doesn't have "permissions". I can't find a way to solve this problem, please help!

  • Opening, lack of masters after importing the iPhoto library

I have a large (about 14 000 pictures) iPhoto library, which seems to work correctly when opened directly into iPhoto 9.6.1 or directly in Aperture 3.6. When open in one of those, all the "originals" or the "masters" can be located, and there is no problem.

I want to merge this library in a large Aperture library. I tried to do this using file-> import-> library, who ran with no error message. After the work of import, most photos imported into iPhoto show an error icon, indicating that they are absent from their master. There are about 9 500 photos with masters missing, according to opening. I can use the tool to "Locate the referenced files", and then I see all these pictures with masters missing have "null" as the name of the volume in their way, and their path begins with the year of the import job. Path of the example:

    2012/01/03/20120103-185643/DSC02345. JPG

To reconnect the master, I can navigate to the iPhoto library container and click the 'Masters' folder in the library container. As soon as I click on the folder of "Masters", the tool referenced files locates the record (since the rest of the path matches). See the screenshot:

This method will not work for me, however, because the button "Log everything" does nothing. It will reconnect only one photo at a time, then the development of the upper part of the tool files referenced changes, and I need to re - click on the missing file missing, re - click the 'Masters' folder and click on reconnect again. I can't make that 9 500 times.

Then why Aperture loses these masters when it is important to iPhoto? Is it possible to reconnect all of this?

Then why Aperture loses these masters when it is important to iPhoto? Is it possible to reconnect all of this?

The problem seems to be the Masters folder offline state.

have you tried to repair or rebuild the iPhoto library before trying to merge into the Aperture library (Aperture 3 User Manual: repair and rebuild your Aperture library)?

  • Can I delete photos on my iPhone after them have been imported into iPhoto library?

    Hello!

It is at this time of the year when you wanted to take pictures of summer vacation right on your iphone, but you found out that you have less than 500 MB of memory space. Well, it's happened to me.

I imported my iPhone on my Macbook iPhoto pictures, and I would like to delete these photos on my iPhone. I would like to know if I could do it in iPhoto or iTunes.

In addition, it would be possible for me to re - upload photos from iPhoto to my iPhone?

    Kind regards

Assuming you are using iPhoto and not the new Photos.app, Yes.

You can bulk delete via Capture of Image (in the Applications folder)

Create a picture Album that you want on the phone and you can share them on the phone via iTunes.

Similar goods are available with Photos.app and photo library to iCloud, but work in different ways.

  • Photos app cannot import iPhoto library

My iPhoto library is quite large, 32 GB for 9 500 items.  I've recently updated my operating system and related applications, and when I use the Photo app to import the old iPhoto library, it shows 'Prepare the library' and starts the import process, but hangs up to 24% each time.  When I look in the pictures folder, I find a folder called "Photo library" normal which is fully navigable (I don't have to display the contents of the package), and find a file titled 'Masters' who is the same size as the iPhoto 'Originals' folder.  I then tried to circumvent the import process by default app Photos, creating a new library, and then import the file of masters - it finds about 9 100 files to import, short of 9 500 originals).  If I anything I'll miss 400 originals, not to mention the modified in iPhoto versions.

I found a lot of people pointing out the import problems, but none that hangs up the same and every time, and no one Ive seen publishes the solution.

  • If I import photos from iPhoto they will similarly remain in iphoto

If I import photos from iPhoto they will remain in iPhoto

Yes, your masters will remain in iPhoto. Items will make a copy.

You can import a library full iPhoto (v09 and above) including events or import individual photos.

  • Migration for photos gives 'unexpected error' iphoto library

I tried for a while to migrate my 50 GB in photos iphoto library. I already have

    • Restarted (several times)
    • Called the apple support

Anyone has any ideas on how to get this to work?

iPhoto is not removed from your hard drive.  It was just removed from the dock and is always in the Applications folder. In order to get iPhoto 9.6.1 from the App Store, you must first have a version of iPhoto 9.X on your hard drive. If you try following instructions of Terence Devlin this post to get iPhoto 9.6.1 from the App Store:

Go to the App Store and check out the shopping list. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If iPhoto 9.6.1 is there, close the App Store, drag your existing iPhoto application (not the library, just the app) to the trash and then return to the App Store.

Install the application on the App Store.

IPhoto is sometimes not visible on the shopping list. It may be hidden. See this article for more details on how to view it.

    http://support.Apple.com/kb/HT4928

A question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto, the application and the iPhoto library are two different parts of the iPhoto program. So, reinstall the application should not affect the library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

NOTE: the key of this procedure is to move the existing version of iPhoto 9 to the trash in the Dock (not yet empty) before going to the App Store.

  • import photos from apple?

I have lightroom and you want to import my old photos that exist currently in iPhoto, and photos by apple.

Went under file, plug in extras, import from iPhoto library.

But the plug says that he supports libraries with iPhoto 9.5.1 and later versions.  It says my library is older and errors may be encountered.

Before, I thought I'd see if anyone has a better way to do it.

    Thank you very much.

Import folder of masters as suggested above is the fastest solution, but it has a few drawbacks: it keeps all the metadata (location is particularly important for me) and more problematic for me - don't retains the structure of the album. What I want, it's essentially to convert my photo folder/album structure in the folder structure in Lr (each year is its own folder containing albums of the year where each album also includes the datecode in the form of 'Name of the AAMM-DD').

The only solution I found was to setup auto import Lightroom folder, then use it to export a photo album of this folder, go to Lightroom, wait until automatic importation was complete and finally to rename the new folder in Lightroom in the name of the Album. It had to be repeated for each album, so you can imagine that it is time consuming and not pleasure at least... But to help me maintain my sanity, I created 2 macros Keyboard Maestro, one for export a photo album and the other to take care of renaming in Lr. They work like this:

    1. first macro exports all photos in the album selected in Lr auto import folder and copies the album name to the Clipboard.

2 then when Lr moved all the pictures I launched the second macro that renames newly created auto import folder using the name of the previously copied album.

    3. after each year, I created the folder of the new year in Lr and then tweaked the auto import settings so that it has generated record auto import inside this new folder (it's optional, as it is very easy to manage files in Lr later too, especially since I use datecode on their behalf, but it is still nice to have created folders to which they belong)

That allows to import > 20000 photos of ~ 1200 albums for the past 16 years, preserving all metadata as well as maintaining the structure desired in Lr... Took me again some time, spread over two evenings, but at least the macros does all the work of painstainking of clicking, typing and pressing the buttons, all I had to do was throw them and wait to be filled. In addition, it's also fun going through old photos.

If someone wants to try this route, I can send them my macros for good start (you must own Keyboard Maestro https://www.keyboardmaestro.com/main/ (can't quite recommend it, use all the days for various shortcuts) - and you probably have to adapt your own workflow macros)

  • Import iPhoto Library after upgrade of the Sierra

I upgraded to Sierra and now try to import some of my photos from iPhoto library that I had saved to Time Machine. The Photos App says 'nothing to import' - everyone has figured this out? Thank you!

Belongs to the iPhoto Library always Time Machine backup?

Can restore to a different drive. You cannot migrate the library as part of a Time Machine backup or a disk Time Machine.

To migrate the iPhoto for photo library, drag the Photos icon in the Dock or launch Photos while holding down the button options. That will bring up a panel of library selector. Now select the iPhoto in restored library.

The Photos App says 'nothing to import' - everyone has figured this out? Thank you!

Photos cannot import libraries and merge them into existing libraries. He can't open a library to create a library of Photos converted.

  • How to copy an iPhoto Library AND photos

    Simple:

Go to your pictures folder and find the iPhoto library here. Drag it to the external hard drive. It will make an exact copy it

Are you running a Managed or referenced library?

A managed, library is the default setting, and iPhoto copies the files in the iPhoto library during import. The files are then stored in the library package

A referenced library is where iPhoto does NOT copy the files in the iPhoto Library when importing because you have made a change to iPhoto-> preferences-> advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files in the library to import) The files are then stored wherever you put them and not in the library package. In this scenario, you are responsible for the management of files.

If you have a library that is referenced, then it is much more complicated.
