Impossible to rename a folder after it is created in 'Favorites' found in I / E.

I have rights administrator, but after the creation of a new folder, I right click on it and click Rename, I enter the new name and left-click to keep the new name. Next, I get the message "the file or folder does not exist.

I have also problems with loading the programs on the net, I wonder to perform or record, and I save my file downloads. I then go into the download file and locate the program but its icon is empty. It indicates the size of the download, but when I try to open it, I get the message that I associate a file type or Protocol with a program.

I do not have the slightest but are my 2 problems related in some way?

I am running Vista, SP2, 32-bit system on my laptop.

    Hello

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forum.

The error "the specified device name is invalid" is displayed if you try to name a folder with a name that represents a limit of MS-DOS device name.

The MS-DOS device driver names cannot be used as file names in Windows. As a result, we cannot name as records con, zero, etc.

Microsoft MS-DOS booked these names for these system device drivers.

    • CON: Keyboard and display
    • PRN: System list device, usually a parallel port
    • To THE: auxiliary device, usually a serial port
    • CLOCK$: the system real-time clock
    • DRAW: Bit-Bucket device
    • A:-Z:: the drive letters
    • COM1: First communications port series
    • LPT1: First parallel printer port
    • LPT2: Second parallel printer port
    • LPT3: The third parallel printer port
    • COM2: Second communication port series
    • COM3: Third serial communications Port
    • COM4: Fourth serial communications Port

  • Impossible to rename the files in the folder "" downloads ".

I can not rename all the files in the folder "downloads" on my computer Windows 7 ". I don't get an error message, it just does not get renamed. Happens with new records and old folder that already could be renamed. Sometimes with the right click 'Rename' way and Captain F2. It happens also if I press 'Enter' or if I just click outside the folder after renaming it.

This is the kind of annoying to have three folders called "New folder (2)" etc. may not be renamed.
I saw 1 post this topic on another forum, but no solution, so I thought I'd ask. It has been like this for a long time, and I don't remember if a special event or a well triggered it.

Well, it happened to me and I just thought about it.

See if you use a shortcut to the folder. If you are, try to enter the folder path (usually C:\Users\*Name of the user\Downloads) and see if you can rename the things out there. If you can, just press Backspace and create a shortcut from there.
In my case, this problem happened because I accidentally deleted the shortcut I used for this folder, and to make the shortcut again once I used the fuction 'Search' to find and create the .encre. But when I did, the Windows 7 created the shortcut with the search path, being % search % downloads and so on. What is the fuction 'Rename' to stop working.]
Weird, for sure. But okay, I worked here. Heh

After you rename a folder full of .dng and. MOV files using LR CC, I now have two of each file DNG image with consecutive numbers providing unique names. . MOV files are not affected. I have Lightroom on Mac and Windows PC with local catalogues which are clouds synchronized (but never on at the same time). Could be the cause of this problem? It is possible that differ from the Mac and Windows version catalogs and their creative together via the Cloud technology synchronization can cause this duplication is obvious when all files are renamed by using a number of automatic sequence?

Yes, my default sort criteria is by file name as my beginning of file names with a reverse date followed by a sequence number. I think at some stage I must have reproduced all the files on the Windows PC and saved with a different range of sequence numbers after the element of date filenames outside of LR. Sometime later I have imported in the Lightroom. When I decided to rename all of them using this naming convention, I discovered the duplication hiding behind different file names. This turns out to be a lesson on the practices of workflow systems.

  • Impossible to rename folders on Vista Home Premium 32-bit

I can create a new folder in Explore, but impossible to rename.  My research indicates this is probably an error in registry, would have been in this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENT
    VERSION\EXPLORER\FOLDER_DESCRIPTIONS.
When I Open regedit, it seems that this key exists in my registry, however.

I tried to fix it through all the following options listed in my search:

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/949109
    http://www.Winhelponline.com/blog/unable-to-rename-or-move-folders-in-Windows-Vista/
    http://www.WinVistaClub.com/T46.html

None of these worked, even after disarming system keeps McAfee to ensure that he was not interfering.   Interestingly, I don't get the error "the file does not exist" typical that most relate to this problem.  In addition, I CAN rename new files on an another user account on the same PC, but not in the original administrator account.

Any ideas what to try next?

You have found most of the items good for repair this type of problem when it is the problem.  Maybe the problem is not the process of change of name, but with your profile (especially if the process works by using a different profile).

Your administrator user profile can are damaged.  To fix this use http://windows.microsoft.com/en-AU/windows-vista/Fix-a-corrupted-user-profile.  If that is the only available Administrator Profile (you need to be an administrator to fix this), enable the Hidden Administrator Account (HAA) using http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?&lang=en&cr=US&guid=&sloc=en-us&dg=microsoft.public.windows.vista.administration_accounts_passwords&p=1&tid=d20f9db4-7b2c-48be-a087-7835dc2a9055&mid=d20f9db4-7b2c-48be-a087-7835dc2a9055.  If you don't remember the password, try nothing because that's probably what you (or seller) did during the installation.  Once that is done, don't forget to disable the HAA to save it in case it is necessary once again and for safety reasons (since people often try to hack into systems using this account).  Do NOT use the HAA as your administrator account because if you lose the only administrator on the system account or it is damaged again, then you're watered.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

    Hi Peter,

Thanks for posting your question in the Microsoft Community.

From your problem description, I understand that you are unable to transfer files from an external drive on another drive. Please let me know if this isn't the problem that you are experiencing.

Before troubleshooting, I have little information on the issue.

    1. Do you receive any error or display message?
    2. Did you recent hardware or modifications to the software on the computer before this problem?

Try the methods and then check after each method:

Method 1: Transfer files from a drive to the location on the desktop or a temporary folder and then try to transfer them to the destination disk.

Note: make sure the free space on the disk in the destination drive.

    Method 2: Run the Fixit:

    http://support.Microsoft.com/mats/windows_file_and_folder_diag/

Method 3: Disconnect your player safely, and restart the computer. And then try to transfer the files.

If the problem persists, post your reply with results and questions above. We are happy to help you further in the advanced troubleshooting steps!

    It will be useful.

I do not see changes within a folder, except if I go up a level and then again enter the folder, for example, create new folder, rename the folder, rotate the image, etc..

By pressing the "F5" key would probably be to refresh the folder.

  • Why can't I rename a folder?

When I try to rename a folder newly created - after saving a file pdf (attachment Outlook inside) - I get this error message: unable to perform action because the folder or file is open in another program. I can't do seem to change it.  The file is not open in Word; Nothing in Word is open.  Nothing is open in Adobe Acrobat.  The folder I want to rename IS open. but I can't understand how to rename a file without opening it.  Other independent Win Explorer files are open.  This so-called open the folder does not appear in the Win Task Manager.  And the only file in the devinitely folder is not opened.  Should I give up and learn to love the name I tried to change?  Or is there another step I should try?  Of course, restarting the computer will certainly solve the problem.  But I wouldn't have this problem in the first place.

Thank you.  I solved the problem of the low tech medium.  The name of the original file was pretty close to what I had so I've ignored the problem, went and did something else in Word for a while and then tried to rename the folder again.  It worked!  Explains exactly the problem, of course, but who has time to deal with weird things in Windows?

  • Impossible to rename files in Windows 7 "cannot find this item.

Since the last batch of updates of Windows 7 (KB915597, KB3179573, KB3115475, KB3177723 and KB915597), suddenly I am completely impossible to rename the folders, even newly created. When I try, I'm greeted by an error message indicating:

    "Cannot find this article.

It is no longer in [location of the folder]. Check the location of the item and try again. »

I clearly see that the file has not changed, and hit the "Try" button again makes the error message disappears for a split second before returning again.

I am sure that no recent updates is responsible and this uninstallation of the update should solve the problem, but I don't know enough about them to 99.99969999503% (or how exactly the origin of the problem) to determine what. No one knows that one is?

    HI naderskhan,

The problem occurs only with certain folders or all folders?

Perform these steps and check if it solves the problem:

    Step 1:

I suggest to create a new user account and check if it makes a difference.

Refer to this link for help:
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/create-a-user-account

If it solves the problem, you can fix the damaged user profile.

    See this link:
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/fix-a-corrupted-user-profile

    Step 2:

Perform a clean boot to verify if a third-party program or service is the cause of the problem.

Refer to this article for more information:

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
