  I have a 2nd generation Ipod which is is disabled because of lost password. So I know no more iOS type.

  Turn off the iPod Touch. Press in and hold the home button while connecting to iTunes, make sure that you press and hold the home button before you connect and keep holding until you see the recovery screen, must look like the one below.   Cheap and good jovi...  That IS indeed a serious problem.    But at least the iPod still plays music, so its battery is OK.

  You use the USB cable supplied with 2nd gen iPod?  It is long with a cradle at the end of the shuffle.  The replacement of home cable shuffle Apple sells currently is to shuffle 3rd and 4th generation and does not work with 2nd gen shuffle (connector is different).

  There are third party replacement cables, but they must be described as 2nd gen shuffle.  And they tend to be cheap and of poor quality, then this might be the problem here.

  The iPod screen indicates that there is a link?  Does say 'Connected' or 'do not disconnect '?

  If the screen of the iPod does not indicate a connection, if possible, you should try different USB docking cable keys.  Your power cable may be defective.
