Install existing HDD

I have an internal hard drive from an old XP computer and I would like to install it in another with Vista. The problem is I want to get rid of Windows XP currently on the drive but keep my personal files. Media, Documents, etc...

I can currently view the files using an adapter SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 on my laptop and desktop, both with Windows Vista.

The pc, with that hard drive provided is more opperational, so essentially I would like to uninstall the XP currently on this subject.

How to do this.

Impossible to uninstall the XP operating system on it and just keep the files; It is necessary to wipe the lot

The files are installed/registered on the XP operating system.

Put your hard drive in the hard drive enclosure, plug the Vista computer and read/save was from there.

See you soon.

    Hello

It depends on the type of license you have, as to whether you can transfer it or not.

Pre-installed Licenses OEM (HP, Acer, etc.) and the Microsoft System Builder OEM licenses are tied to the first machine that they are installed on and channels of license when this machine dies.

    OEM licenses are not transferable.

If you have purchased your own license for sale retail of Windows and installed yourself, yes you can transfer it to another computer.

    Retail licenses are transferable.

  • Can I install a HDD IDE in HP A6700Y

I have a HP A6700Y (REF # NC686AA #ABA) who needs a new primary HARD drive. I want to test it with an IDE HDD I have on hand. Is it possible to install a HDD IDE in this PC? If it is possible, where the controller ports are located on the map? I couldn't see the cables in usual tablecloth or sheets of food for an IDE drive. I'm not familiar with the new SATA technology. Would appreciate some advice.

    Thank you

    Paul,

Thank you for your response.  The blue connector and one above and to the right are like connectrors IDE. There are four connectors of available power. Could you suggest a resource in order to confirm that these are indeed the IDE connectors? I don't see no labelling around them. I'll try an IDE Ribbon and see if it fits.

  • Install old HDD to the pc with the new HARD drive and operating system different?

Hi, I recently ripped my old laptop that no longer works, after buying a newer laptop 4 years ago. The new laptop has Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit installed while the old machine had Windows Vista installed. I want to put the old HDD in my new machine to extract some files that I want to keep and possibly use this particular drive as a disc of extra storage without having to turn it into a portable device. Would that work or would I meet problems with him? It would be just a plug & play this sort of thing (as the old HDD already has an operating system installed) or the old drive (vista) would cause the new drive (win7) fails at startup?

And sorry if this has already been covered. I searched through the questions asked previously and has not really found a similar job.

You can use your old drive, but you should check that the "Boot order" is the most recent Player listed before the old drive. If need be exit and save your BIOS boot becomes.

    Next

After you have started since the new drive, you may need to take ownership of the files you need to copy.

To take ownership of a file or folder

    1. open Windows Explorer and locate the file or folder you want to take charge.
    2. right click on the file or folder, click Properties, and then click the Security tab.
    3. click on advanced and then click the owner tab.
    4. click on edit and then do one of the following:
To change the owner to a user or group that is not listed, click other users and groups and enter the object name to select (examples), type the name of the user or group and then click OK.

To change the owner to a user or a group is listed in the change owner to box, click the new owner.

    5. (optional) to change the owner of all subcontainers / folders and objects in the tree view, select the Replace owner of subcontainers and objects check box.

Then use 'Disk management' to delete all existing partitions and reformat the old drive.

  • Satellite M70-151 - not possible to install new HDD

    Hello

I have a problem with my Satellite M70-151. bunch of old hard drive (100 GB Hitachi) reached the Windows XP screen then just ends with a blue screen a turn off laptop, immediately. I had to restore my data with an application file-rescue of another PC. It was not possible to start from old hard drive yet.

Then I bought a Western Digital SATA II 250 GB hard drive that put my Windows XP CD in DVD player installed and tried to start. The laptop turns off as soon as the laptop computer tried to access the HARD disk.
Thought, it was question of SATA II disk and tried a Samsung 160 GB Sata I - same result.

    BIOS recognizes the correct drives.

If I try to boot from old hard drive, it shows the issue I mentioned first, but as before it reaches the Windows XP Boot screen before moving on to the blue screen before turning off the laptop. So start goes further than the boot with new hard drives

The Windows XP CD I used is not the restore CD that came with the laptop, but a normal license.

The heat is not a problem, I cleaned the CPU fan there is enough space to breathe the cold air mobile, the temperature is ok.

    * My questions are: *.

Is there any special application running on laptops satellite, like special software of Toshiba, perhaps Backup, should I be aware of?
What I need to preformat the hard drive, Toshiba-Hardware will recognize the hard drive?

It would be great to get help on this issue, because I'm out of ideas. Thanks in advance!

    André

    Hello Andrew

This behavior is very strange. I have some old Satellite M70-159 with 100 GB HARD drive. I also tested how it will work with a 250 GB HARD drive and all is well.
On two drives, I have installed WXP using the Toshiba recovery image.

I answer your two questions No. to install Windows XP Home edition on this model of laptop you don't need some special Toshiba application or a piece of software.
HDD should be recognized correctly by the BIOS and the Windows XP Home edition installation procedure should work well.
What you can try is to set the BIOS to the default settings and try again.

The strange thing for me is that judgment. The blue screen tells me that there may be some serious hardware problem, the HARD drive controller might be. It's really not easy to say with certainty what can be the problem.

  • Install a HDD 3TO in an XPS 8300 gives me 746GB

I know it's a popular topic on the internet, but I have not found enough of my answer. Install a WD 3TO HDD in my machine XPS 8300 WIndows 7 Home Premium 64 - bit as a secondary drive. Not my bootable disk. BIOS, Dell A03, recognizes this. Intel RST sees it as a 3 TB drive. Initialized in with a GPT disk management, but it shows up as 746G. I would like to put my finger on it until I have start the download and upgrade system software. Any help is appreciated.

    Hi Tbob79,

You must update the Intel RST. It can't hurt to update your BIOS too.

  • How do I reinstall Windows (installed new HDD) 8

My laptop is dead needs a new drive hard of... My Windows 8 is an OS upgrade.  How can I get the 8 Windows installed if I do not have the older versions of the Windows ME/XP/Vista/7.  They were all existing operating system upgrades

    Hi Tinktoy,

If all the windows are an upgraded version, and if you don't have any DVD or product key, you will need to purchase a full version of Windows 8. You need not a previous version of Windows installed, and this would require the OEM System Builder version.

To install a Windows 8 upgrade version, you must already have Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP installed on your PC. If you have Windows 7 DVD and a product key, you can install Windows 7 on the new hard drive and later upgrade to Windows 8 later we can do phone activation.

See also the link that talks about the same scenario:

  • Help! How to install a HDD IDE on Compaq CQ5700Y (apricot MOBO - SATA all)...

Hi all. I read a ton of posts here about people who want to install their old drives in their new computers, but so far, none have addressed the specific problem I have. I have a Compaq CQ5700Y with a mini card mother (H-apricot-RS780L-Μatx) which is SATA ONLY and I want to install my old IDE hard drive inside.

The drive I want to put is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 Ultra ATA 250 GB and thought it would be easy enough to do if I just buy an adapter to connect the old hard drive. So I bought an IDE HDD 3.5 SATA Serial ATA converter adapter which I have easily set up power and data cables, set the jumper on the drive master and plugged cable SATA him on the unused port SATA3.

I booted up and heard the old HDD begin to turn: he was alive! But unfortunately when I entered the BIOS it did not there even if all SATA ports are enabled and should have automatically detected it. I thought that maybe it can just be the rider on it, so I tried each of the pin position, master, Cable Select and slave (no jumper at all) but still nothing.

In my recent successful attempts, I played musical slots with the SATA ports between the old HDD, new HARD drive and the DVD drive, but still nothing... I'm completely stumped. I know that the other option is to buy an external enclosure, but I'd really like to keep the drive in the case of the tower. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you

    Eric

I see your motherboard has two PCI Express x 1 expansion slots and you mentioned that one of them has a graphics card in it.  If you have another free location, have you considered installing a PCI Express x 1 IDE controller card?  They cost about $15.

  • Portege 3490, to install new HDD with windows xp ready?

My hard drive failed recently on my portege 3490. I bought a 20 GB seagate replacement hard drive. I installed Windows XP pro by connecting the drive (via adapter) to my office and ran the installation cd.

I thought that I could then just mount the drive in the Portege and be good to go. However when I turn right away on the system asks me to insert the disc system.

I don't have a floppy drive and my single cd is a USB and I can't use it to start.

Someone at - it any ideas how I can get this working?

I plugged my other laptop (Toshiba no) with the same drive and it booed immediately. Thanks for your help

[Edited by: admin on 27 June 05 07:03]

    Hello

Unfortunately I have no drivers list, but on the download from Toshiba site you will find about 18 different drivers for your device using BONE of W2000. Check it on http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com

As far as I know, it won't be easy to do something without floppy drive. I have no much experience with the Portege series but you can try to make two partitions on the second, you can copy the OS disk and start the installation of this partition. Even if you do this, you must start the unit with the startup disk.

  • Install new HDD - recover your drive work?

The hard drive in my L500-1DT seems to have a flaw.

I tested another a L500 HARD drive and it works fine.

It crashes when you try to start, use recovery to start (at the point it detects the HARD drive) and when you use the CD of recovery at the beginning of the process.

If I buy another hard drive, can I use the disk provided by toshiba again to install windows?

I think not I suspect the drive just points to a directory to install from the current hard drive, but some clarity would be great.

    Thank you
    Mike

    > If I buy another hard drive, I can use the disk provided by toshiba again to install windows?
Yes you can. There is no restriction to the HARD drive. Do it.

    Hello

I think the case is clear your phone isn't designed for a second HDD if you don t have a second HARD drive connector in the second HARD drive Bay.

The point is that some laptops A200 are designed for a second HDD and so not all models have a second connector but all a second HDD bay.
As I see in your pictures that you don t have a second connector HARD drive and laptop can use a second HDD.

How can I install windows xp on that laptop! ???

Most tried to make a version of win xp with drivers with nlite sata, but it did not work!

    Hello

I recommend the other discussions of the forum on the same topic.
    Found this one for example:
    http://forums.computers.Toshiba-Europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=26040

You need to install the Intel Matrix storage manager before proceeding with the installation of XP.
As the user above has already suggested the program called nLite can be useful to integrate the necessary driver for the XP CD.
