  I suspect that the game has Digital Rights Management in there (i.e., copy protection) and it checks for you ensure that you physically have the disc so that he knows that you are not a thief.  Many providers of game assumes that you are a thief and you prove that you're not demanding that the disc is in the DVD player when the game takes place.  What I do is to use a program like Alcohol 52%, a free program that can make a copy of a DVD/CD and include in the image copy protection so that you can use a DVD player virtual to mount the image file instead of having the real DVD mounted in a real drive.

  I installed an external USB connected hard drive Seagate to copy some movies and pictures of my HP laptop with Vista, but it became a big problem. It slowed the computer and check the new disc repeatedly. Then it wouldn't start without the external drive at all but it was working fine once he was conducting with the external hard drive. So thinking I can outsmart the computer, I uninstalled the drive from Control Panel.   Please try the possible fix following first thanks to Carey Frisch:

  1. open the BIOS of the motherboard.
  2. find where it says Priority Boot Device, then select CD/DVD-ROM 1, 2nd Hard Drive and disable all the rest.
  3 find somewhere in the BIOS where it says BOOT USB, Wake on USB, etc. and disable all unnecessary options.

  And second if it does not help, you can try the following with Blue Michael:

  Local Geek Squad had me intentionally set the BIOS to the correct order, then re-order and SAVE.
  It worked, even if the list of the BIOS was always in the right order.

  Because the Windows XP installation CD does not have the necessary disk controller drivers.  You will need a floppy drive to provide the drivers of controller for the installation program, or you will need to burn a CD of Windows XP with the controller drivers slipstreamed into the installation.  A CD of Windows XP with SP2 included may have the necessary drivers.

  I note you have a desktop computer and you have posted this in a forum of the laptop, but I think I can help you. Here's the Quickspecs, incidentally:

  With a desktop computer (even a workstation like yours), it is much easier than with a laptop. Just put in the new drive (I guess you understand jumpering with drives ATA/IDE and ID devices if you're dependencies a scsi disk) and format from Windows XP. Now copy the data you want to save on the new disk. You won't be able to separate programs on the new drive if that's what you had in mind. just data files. For example, you can put all your Powerpoint presentations on the new disk, but you cannot move MS Office there. It is linked in the BONE and must be reinstalled.

  If you want to be sure just copy everything except the Windows folder and the Program Files folder to the new drive.

  Yes, you can install all the operating system on its own partition, but be careful to choose to install the new software on another drive top and you may want to move my Documents on the second drive for example.   You said that the hard drives are sata but your bios recognizes them as IDE depending on your position. You might have to set your bios to operate in sata mode or enable AHCI of have recognized them as sata. Regarding the error you get, look in the system BIOS to boot from hard disk command menu. This is different from the command menu of usual starting where you choose each time you start a cd ROM or hard drive ect... The parameter that I refer to determine which hard drive of your computer starts on the first. Change to the primary master 500 GB disk > save your settings and restart your computer. Even if one is defined as main and the other slave is not serious. Some bios have the ability to choose what hard drive to boot from. In other words, it is adjustable to start first on the slave drive.
