Installation of update - 8007371C error code - KB980248 default on Vista

The problem:

I'm having trouble installing the update KB980248 - considered important.  The computer takes a long time to start, because it checks the updates and freezes during use momentarily (from seconds or minutes), making it impossible to use for a job that I do.  After cleaning, it is much faster, but it still has problems.  I will describe the history of the problem and what I tried below.  In short, it has never installed correctly - it is impossible to install and failed on 30 attempts (just checked), which gives a C 8007371 error every time.

Background: I first noticed the problem with the update came at the same time I upgrade Avast version 5. XX (free version) to 4.8 (also free).  I think that the update KB980248 first attempted on April 29, 2010, a few days after the Avast update or maybe the same day - I don't remember.  The Avast update has caused my computer to slow to a level almost unusable.  First of all, I have assumed it was Avast and uninstall this program, substituting Zone Alarm Security Suite (trial) for about 3 or 4 days exactly at the point where KB980248 was released.  Things will speed up a little, but not enough and I thought that Zone Alarm was just more of a resource hog, but works better than Avast.  I then uninstalled and tried BitDefender (trial) with similar results for about 5 days.  After leading almost to the point of madness with gel and slow down in general, I uninstalled it and put Microsoft Security Essentials yesterday (May 8, 2010) on the computer because I had read it was the fastest antivirus solutions available and was now my focus on KB980248 as a reason for the problems.  I thought that a model a little faster I would at least seek solutions without too much pain.

Another attempted action: I uninstalled since all unnecessary programs - games, Apple scum, etc..

I did a disk cleanup and defragmentation to make it as effective as possible.

I note that my desktop software is a Japanese version of Office XP Pro since 2002.  My OS is the Italian version of Vista (32) with Service Pack 2.  You can probably guess that the reason is that I moved a bit during this time.  Last night (April 8, 2010).

I tried to turn off all startup programs and install manually (this was written as a solution on some website), but it did not work.  A restart, my computer just took a little more than 5 minutes to start and close to 6 minutes before it finally recognized my internet connection.  Needless to say that this problem becomes a major pain.  It seems more likely that the cause is the KB980248 update or a combination of it with my setup, given the other reviews here.  It gets worse (although the steps I've taken have helped speed up what works) and I need fixed so if anyone has a solution, I would really appreciate it.

My last choice seems to be to do a system restore (I have no date set for that in advance) or a complete reinstallation of the operating system, but I am reluctant to do so because of the time required.  At this point, however, he reportedly actually been less time I spent trying to remedy this situation.  The only problem is that I don't know even that will solve the problem and don't want to waste more time.  This issue must be resolved quickly to my work.

NOTE: Windows Defender calls for now it is not activated and gives an error message when I try to start it-0x800106ba.  I already reset the startup programs, including Windows Defender, that I had turned off above (all).  After my violin, my program activity and the Internet is now a lot faster it has been long - at least between him freezes.  However, the gel again cause it is unusable for a period of seconds or minutes, rendering it useless for the work, and will not install this important update.

Any help would be appreciated.  Sorry for posting this again, but I've been kindly redirected here and had formatting problems.

See you soon,.
