Installed SP3 on a Dell E520, now problems...

Friends, I have a Dell E520 is my old computer. I've been putting it back for a person to use their laptop is under repair. I no longer had an effective anti-virus program and went to download MS Security Essentials. Was advised that I had to install SP3; It downloaded and installed very well and then told me to restart the computer. Stopped and re-started; ACHI BIOS says "invalid configuration information. I went into Setup and turned floppy on off (another view) and discount at zero hours, etc. POST Tester gives two beeps and 20 code. After I went through Setup, Windows support, shows welcome, then watch my wallpaper with no taskbar or icons and a notice ' settings custom-installation of the custom settings for: Internet Explorer 6. and that's where he stays. the keys are insensitive, although the mouse works. Anyone have any ideas on what I might face or able to do?  any help is greatly appreciated...

by "keys do not respond" do you mean that nothing happens when you press ctrl + alt + del? Windows that sometimes when you set up a new account. Maybe he didn't do prior to service pack 3. If you leave it alone for a while, he should complete and never show again

  • I have XP SP2 and am unable to install SP3. Problems with Windows install & download manager.

I rebuilt a laptop from scratch using XP Home.  Currently, no software beyond basic MS core apps.  Not even MS Office.  I am trying to activate the automatic updates.

The error messages that I get point to Windows Installer and/or MS Download Manager, but these same problems prevent me from deleting/updating install or Download Manager.

If I run FixIt to activate the automatic updates to download SP3, the following error message is returned:
    _Windows Installer_
The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed.
This can occur if Windows Installer is not correctly
    installed.  Contact your support team.

    If I try to manually download the SP3 (WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3 - x 86 - ENU.exe), the following error is returned:
    _Microsoft download Manager_
There was a problem opennig the Microsoft Download Manager.
Update your computer with Windows Service Pack 2 or later version to download
files using the Microsoft Download Manager.

I think I'll through in circles.   I need SP3 for automatic updates, but impossible to install SP3 since SP3 is not installed.  I must be missing something obvious, but I simply cannot get by.  I'd appreciate any help - thanks.

OK, I followed the link clicked on download, saved on my desktop, then tried to start the installation.  The returned message is:

  • Problem after installing SP3

I have family xp SP2 installed. After that I have sp3 insalled I can't get back on the internet, no matter how I try disconnects immediately. I tried a number of facilities and whenever I have to restore to an earlier date and remove sp3 to get back my internet connection! I have broadband wireless on a laptop. Help, please

    Thank you

First download the Service Pack 3 file to a folder on your hard drive. http://www.Microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5b33b5a8-5e76-401F-BE08-1e1555d4f3d4&displaylang=en

Next check the wireless (if external) or manufacturing of the portable computer of (if built in wireless) technical support web site and download the latest version of the wireless driver and software.

If external wireless and then disconnect the USB device and uninstall software. If it has integrated the use of Device Manager to remove the device driver.

Next install SP3 by using the downloaded file.

Now, install the device driver and the software that you downloaded, and then try to connect.

  • Just installed SP3 for XP - now many of my icons are generic "executable", including MS Apps

I finally just installed SP3 for XP and will have proplems with my icons.  Many of my shortcuts desctop now have generic icon for an executable file, and I can't get back them to the icon on the right, even using TweakUI.  This includes all applications of MS Office 2007.  Are still not working the icons to launch the application, but I can't retrieve the appropriate icon.

When I right click an icon of 'good', I get a full menu of options, including those installed with other applications (like adding a archive, WinRAR).  With a "generic" icon, I get only the default list.

When I choose Properties for a 'good' icon, the target lists the full path to the .exe file and is editable.  I can also click on the three buttons at the bottom.  With a 'generic' in the properties icon, the target is simply the name of the program (Outlook 2007 lists "Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007") and is grey, so I can't change it.  In addition, the "Find target" and "Change icon" buttons are gray.

Finally, the files associated with these applications have also lost their icons and now show just generic file icons.  However, double click on these files still brings the correct application and the 'Type' is always listed correctly.

Any ideas on how I could fix this?  Thank you!

OK, I thought about it... and feel kind of stupid but I did not before.  In any case, I posted the question, so I'll share my answer - the long version.

During my first install of XP on my machine, I did a 10 GB partition which would be fair for the operating system.  After a few years, it became clear that it was a little too small, this partition began to fill.  When I first tried to go to SP3, I didn't have enough space on this partition to complete it.  then, I moved some files on the main data partition.  One of the folders, I moved a C:\WINDOWS\Installer.  I didn't know that this file was required for some of the icons on my desktop .exe.

Anyway, I moved everything back to where it belongs, and now everything is back to normal.  Learn something new every day if you're not careful!

Reason: the title was too long

This problem occurs when an old version of Adobe Story is already installed on a system.

To resolve this problem, you must first remove this version and then install the most recent.

Now depending on what system you use, are the steps:

    MAC:

    • Open the "Applications" folder in Finder.
    • Move the application 'Adobe Story' to the trash and remove too much Trash.
    • Just to make sure that this application is not installed on a different drive, do a search for 'Adobe Story' in the spotlight. If it is present on a different location, then remove it from there too.
    • Now connect you to story.adobe.com and download the desktop application again and install it.

    WINDOWS:

    • Open the control panel and uninstall the Adobe Story app
    • Now connect to story.adobe.com and download the desktop application again and install it
  • Clean Install on old laptop Dell Inspiron 5100

I received an old Dell 5100 in perfect condition (nine years) and want to perform an installation to a factory State. I have the original disc, but also the additional disk supplied with the computer, the version is XP Home sp1a. There seems to be no recovery partition No. Updates have been continuous and now show installed Sp3.

My problems are when I started the clean install, he says: I am about to load an earlier version, it's cool, but I'll be able to continue through the updates to sp3 sp1a on my factory drive? I think I read that I may have issues and also issues with the pre-installed Norton AntiVirus again after I read somewhere that this could be a problem as well. I don't find a definitive answer to the question of Norton. Internet Explore on the original disc to factory is also present the update issues?

I'd greatly appreciate some step by step instructions, if someone could help me.

Thank you very much for your help!

There will be no problem goes directly from SP1a SP3 (only a not too install SP2).

I see you are using a factory restore disc which comes with pre-installed software (Norton).  Just pay attention during installation and if asked if you want to install the decline of additional software to do so.  If you are not presented with an option, then you will have little choice but to accept the process of restoration of factory and when go into Add/Remove programs and uninstall unwanted programs.  DO NOT click on, launch or start all the programs you don't want!  Opening of these trial or bloatware programs can complete or start a stub which initiates the installation of the software.

Tried to install sp3 discovered that I had to remove Microsoft shared computer toolkit then had

"There is a problem with this Windows package install." A script required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your supplier of staff or the package of support ".

A Microsoft site, said to resolve this issue, delete the registry key for Shared Computer Toolkit.

To do this, follow these steps:

Click Start, run, type regedit, and then click OK.

Locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products\C66E96CBED74E21478FD1D8B50A5A97F

In the right pane, verify that the ProductName registry entry contains the value "Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit" in the data column.

On the Edit menu, click on remove and then click Yes.

    Exit Registry Editor.

Doing this now, I get the error

  • PC running very slow XP after installing SP3, can I reinstall?

My PC is turned sssslloooowwwwwlllyyy both since the installation of SP3.  I do not want to troubleshoot SP3 for now, so can I remove and reinstall?  My PC is quite old in years of PC, but performance has been acceptable for me up until SP3 came.

    Thank you

    Bidwin

It is important to disable programs such as Webroot before installing SP3. Personally, I prefer to install the stand-alone version of SP3 while I'm offline and after setting up a clean boot:

    http://www.Microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?ID=24

    Also, have a look here:

    http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldron/archive/2008/05/08/Windows-XP-SP3-read-all-prerequisites-for-a-successful-installation.aspx

If you want to solve your problem of performance, set up a CleanBoot and systematically add back programs/process until you figure out the problem:

Also make sure your transfer mode:

You have Windows Search 4.0 installed? (It can be a nightmare performance!)
