IP instead of DNS hostnames in vCenter 4.0

I have all my ESX host servers in vCenter with their IP addresses instead of their DNS host names.  How can I change that on vCenter?

FYI... in the tab Configuration-> DNS and routing-> Identification of the host, it displays the DNS name and the domain correctly.

I read a few posts for years for a different version of vCenter referred to either remove the vCenter host and by adding using DNS name instead of the intellectual property or edit the vCenter DB in SQL, but gave no details.

Also, I want to make sure I get the correct answer for this version of vCenter.

Hello.

See KB 1014030.

Good luck!

  • Best practices for active directory / dns / hostname configuration

    Scenario:

    DNS servers are not integrated with active directory and all hosts of VMS esx virtual environment have host names on the dns comain called inside.contoso.com - such as an esx server called "esx1.inside.contoso.com" and a virtual machine called "linuxvm1.inside.contoso.com".

    We have set up a domain active directory to manage authentication for the vcenter server.  This domain active directory must be a subdomain of the existing - such as dns domain

    'addomain.inside.contoso.com '.

    What is recommended in this scenario?

    In addition, the vcenter server should be designated as a member of the domain such as "vcenter1.addomain.inside.contoso.com".

    or should it be named 'vcenter1.inside.contoso.com '.

    We have currently a scerario, where domain active directory is not a subdomain - i.e. the AD domain is nwtraders.local and dns domain is "inside.contoso.com" when the vcenter server is added to the ad domain, its host name is "vcenter1.nwtraders.local".   When vmware customers to computers outside the domain of advertising then connect to this server vcenter, problems result from this AD/DNS/hostname design and some features of the vmware client do not work correctly as a result, unless the client vmware runs on a computer joined to the domain, nwtraders.local, which is not possible for all computers.

    Any comments or thoughts appreciated - thank you

    You have an AD domain that is used for your server vcenter only - which is pretty safe. Ms. do guides on building server roles such as domain controllers - you may wish to consider looking at these.

    Regarding the DNS to use - there is no right or wrong answer, this is which option is the best solution for your organization, given the technical, commercial, geographical or political demands.

  • Gaberlunzie in the terminal instead of the hostname prompt

    Hello

    I launched terminal today and instead of the usual "HOSTNAME: directory$ ' format, he says" Gaberlunzie: directory$.  I left the terminal and restarted and it was gone and I was not able to reproduce.  From the Windows world, this seems highly suspicious to me.  Has anyone seen this happen on their Mac?  I downloaded Avast Mac Security and perform a scan just as a precaution, but I thought that I would like to tender hand to the community to see if anyone had any ideas as to the reason for this strange behavior.

    Thanks in advance.

    JC

    The bash shell when the substitution therapy \h in your string of prompt PS1 taking your IP address of nn.nn.nn.nn and a loss by doing a DNS lookup.  If the DNS server returns a name, that name appears under your host name.  If this isn't the case name is returned, then your system preferences-> sharing-> computer name is displayed.

    Your DNS server gave your Mac this Gaberlunzie name because at the same time Gaberlunzie registered with the DNS server it name associated with the IP address you are using.

    It must have been a temporary situation as the next time that you start a session of shell bash that research did not return Gaberlunzie.  If I had to guess, I would say that gaberlunzie re-recorded with the DNS server under a different IP address, so the former association with the IP address you are using has been removed.

    If you do not want to be subjected to what the server DNS has said that your host name is that you can change your PS1 prompt string to use something like

    Ps1 = "$(networksetup-getcomputername):\W."

  • on AD and DNS requirement in vCenter server installation

    Hello, I am facing installation stuffs now. It's about installation vCenter server 5.5 under windows.

    I'm just in my lab. He went well when I installed vCenter server device and I can do the remaining animals vSphere.

    But this time I must try to use vCenter in windows. I'm stuck in the 'server URL search"in installing vCenter.

    Is it OK to install the vCenter without AD and DNS server as I do now. If this isn't the case, pls guide me.

    You must at least COMPLETE your vCenter server field cannot be resolved and if you do not have DNS server in your lab, try to configure the host files... and on the announcement, if you do not have Active Directory domain or the vCenter Server belongs to a workgroup, not all features are available.

  • change of hostname in vCenter

    I have an ESXi4 host that I just added to vCenter.  It was the license test.  I changed it to a registered license.  Don't think it would be a problem for my problem.   When I added it to vCenter he would not accept the name of ESX100.  So, I had to use the IP address.  There are in with the Ip address vCenter.  I want to change it to ESX100.   When I display the DNS settings, it is labeled ESX100.   Confused.

    ESXi only records with DNS, you need to manually add a host record for the ESXi host.  Once you have done this, and you can ping on the host by host to vCenter name, right-click on the existing host and select Delete.  Then add the host DNS name.  SMV will stay running during this change.

  • How to change hostname in vCenter

    I made a mistake when I configure vCenter.  Instead of using the host name, I put the IP address.  I don't see any option in vCenter to rename the host.  If I try to delete the host he says that it will remove all the VM.  How can I solve this problem?  Thank you.

    Yes, just cick on the HOST, choose disconnect, then remove.  The virtual machine is running.  The host 'Add' return with FULL domain name

  • Setup DNS - hostname question

    Hello

    In the Configuration (configure management network), for the DNS host name, is a name we give to the ESXi machine? Just to confirm

    For now, I have 'vm1.test.net '.

    TNT

    Yes, it is the name of ESXi and it is important that it should be resolvable, HA depends on DNS.

    Don't use a single word for servers ESX (i) domain name as 'esxi1.domain '. I didn't try with ESXi and ESX requires a "dotted" domain name like "esx1.domain.name".

  • Use instead of ESX ESXi with vCenter

    Hello.

    I wonder if I change all hypervisors to ESX 4.1, ESXi 4.1, some of the advanced features such as HA and FT are still available or not.

    HA & FT are permitted.

    Thank you.

    Hello

    ESXi has all the features of ESX when full his license.

    Although you no longer have a service console, you will still be able to use HA / DRS / FT / pools of resources etc.

    ESXi is not an ESX reduced in functionality, it just has a smaller footprint.

  • Console remote vCenter access (NAT problem)?

    Hello world

    I have problems accessing my VMRC via vCenter WebClient.

    My network config is as described in the title:

    my office LAN (say 192.168.1.50)-> firewall-> my server room (say 10.1.1.0/24).

    the ESX and vCenter are in the server room.

    To access the server room,'s done it through NAT (IE to access my true IP vCenter 10.1.1.10 I access from my desktop to 200.1.1.10).

    When I access the remote console hollow vSphere Client (so connecting directly to ESX without using vCenter) works (the console log shows that I connect to the NAT address).

    When I want to access a remote console trough the web interface, the console to it log shows tries to reach the REAL of ESX instead of the NAT one address.

    I hope that I was enough to get a clear answer

    Is - this repairable or y at - it a parameter that escapes me in vCenter to make this setup work (I did research all morning without finding a clue).

    Thanks in advance and forgive my approximate English.

    I finally find myself...

    I assumed that, as a result of posting here makes me think differently!

    Solution: Add the host whose DNS name in vCenter instead of IP addresses, then the VM consoles work properly.

  • vCSA vcenter service cannot start

    I use the trial version of the device of the VirtualCenter server in our lab are fine POC development.

    I can get the deployed ovf and the vcenter server has started.

    If I configure the vCSA without changing the hostname, the vcenter service starts and I can access the app from vcenter through VIC, connect my host, etc..

    The problem is when I go to change the host name of the application of vcenter just going down the Hill. The embedded DB cannot update tables, vcenter service will not completely start and the vcenter is inaccessible.

    I tried removing the drive and redeploying a few times now and not can't find a work around for this.

    Any help would be welcome.

    Notes: I used the following forum to help you, what helps me it to certain things.

  • VCenter VM backup

    Hi all

    I saw this KB to vCenter backup.

    Backup and restore of vCenter Server 4.x and 5.0

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1023985

    Can I just backup all vCenter VM?

    I am using standalone VMware converter to do.

    Any objection to this method? A better way?

    I'm on ESXi and vCenter 4.1

    Thank you.
    Fajar.

    Then your problem is when restoring, if you take a full backup of the server using any tool, the problem will be when you restore the server in case of disaster.

    You'll lose some of the configuration, statistics, etc...

    I would rather you take backup for the DB only and build a new server disaster and that it points to the DB restored instead of a backup complete vCenter (to save space).

    The best scenario is to put your DB on a different server.

  • Util::Connect() undefined subroutine

    Hi people,

    I would like to start this comment by saying that I'm not an expert in Perl. It's my first Perl script and it's especially cut-and - paste examples in the documentation of Perl VI and everywhere in the web. (Thanks xtravirt!)  This note is a continuation of http://communities.vmware.com/message/1201783

    I build a script CGI which I hope will do the following:

    • Be called from VirtualCenter as a tab attached to a virtual machine

    • Enter the session ID, the name of vm (ie: vm-xxxx) and other things

    • Assemble this information in a session file

    • Connect to VirtualCenter

    • Get the DNS from the virtual machine host name

    • Redirect to a report with the DNS hostname in it. IE: report_$ hostname.html

    The script runs on Windows IIS. I copied AppsUtil in the folder C:\Program VMware VI Perl Toolkit\Perl\lib.

    I got it to the point where I can analyze all moref, sessionid, etc... and it spits out using print statements.

    What I have trouble is with Util::Connect()

    This is a part of a test script.

    #!" C:\Program VMware VI Perl Toolkit\Perl\bin\perl.exe"

    use strict;

    use warnings;

    use CGI::Carp qw (fatalsToBrowser);

    Use File::Copy;

    use VMware::VIRuntime;

    use AppUtil::VMUtil;

    Use CGI;

    use strict;

    My $cgi = new CGI;

    my $server = ("virtualcenter.test.local");

    My $sessionfile = ("mysession.txt");

    my $service_url = " " https://VirtualCenter.test.local/SDK/vimService ";

    #my $vim = vim - & gt; New (service_url = & gt; $service_url);

    #$vim = $vim - & gt; load_session (session_file = & gt; "mysession.txt");

    Vim::load_session (service_url = & gt; $service_url, session_file = & gt; $sessionfile);

    #Connect to the CR

    #

    Util::Connect();  #line 21 where the error occurs

    My $host_view = Vim::find_entity_view (view_type = & gt; "HostSystem");

    print 'is the name of this host', $host_view - & gt; name. » \n\n » ;

    When lance of VC, I get the following:

    Undefined subroutine & Util::Connect called C:\Inetpub\cgi-bin\plugin-1.pl, line 21.

    Help please? (have mercy, 20 years, I've realized there are, I sucked it to write code, but sometimes I pretend)

    Thank you

    Mike

    You don't need the Util: functions at all, they are just there for convenience.  You can ignore them if you want, they mostly just help you manage script settings and provide some utility functions.

    In fact, you hit a bug in my opinion.  If you look at the code of the VICommon.pm module, you will find the following:

    open(SFILE, $file) or die "ERROR: Can't open session file \'$file\'\n";
             $line = ;
             $line = ;
             if (defined($line) && ($line =~ /\w*\s*domain=(.*).local/)) {
                Opts::set_option('server' => $1);
                $url = Opts::get_option('url');
             } else {
                if (defined($line) && ($line =~ /\w*\s*domain=(.*?);/)) {
                   Opts::set_option('server' => $1);
                   $url = Opts::get_option('url');
                }
             }

    The load_session function actually looks like a url with a .local suffix and removes it.  In your case, the .local is part of your FULL domain name.  Load_session code will delete the your server string .local, you like virtualcenter.marketing - test.local.  I don't know why they have thought to undress the server string .local.  What explains your error 500 appeal.

    You can probably get around this by using the IP address of your vCenter server when you run save_session.pl.  This is the domain of the cookie of the ip address and it will not be hit for the string .local regular expression matching.  Or you can use - url as a parameter to your script instead of - server.  From the code module load_session, the scalar you spend $url will be replaced only if you set a session_file argument.

    However, I try it on an example of code that I wrote and I seem to have become a quiet error.  Not to get all returned objects.  Can you see if the changes I suggested get your sample code work?

    (edit)  I found it, they call it Util::Disconnect in the desconstructor ManagedObject, just use a SaveSession script without anything else.  After it worked well.

  • Change of address IP UCS Central

    Hello

    Anyone know if it is supported?

    Thank you very much

    Hi Frank

    It's hard, why?

    -Register a domain UCS, does not support DHCP for obvious reasons.

    -You can not change or swap the IP addresses used by Cisco UCS Manager in a domain that is registered with Cisco UCS Central. If you need to change or swap this IP address, you must first cancel the Cisco UCS Central domain registration. You can re-register the domain of the Cisco UCS after changed or exchanged the IP address.

    -If you use a hostname instead of IP address, you must configure a DNS server. If the Cisco's UCS domain is not registered with Cisco UCS Central or DNS management is defined at the local level, configure a DNS server in Cisco's UCS Manager. If the area of Cisco UCS is registered with Cisco UCS Central and DNS management has the overall value, configure a DNS server in Cisco UCS Central.

    So maybe if you used a DNS hostname, instead of an IP address to register a UCS domain, you can change the IP address in the DNS (and IP address in the center of the UCS).  Question is: How can you use UCS Manager to do a reverse DNS lookup and choose the IP address has changed. Write off / registry is not the solution.

    Summary: I don't think that there is a decent solution.

    Walter.

  • SRM 5.5 service keeps arrived unexpectedly

    Awright people, I tried to get this working for days now and it's time to ask the experts.

    Brief fast on my lab: physical machine running 5.5, then nested multiple 5.5 systems running inside the physical box. I have two vCenter (one prod, the other DR). I have SRM installed on a separate virtual machine (I know that I can have it on the same machine as vCenter). The SQL database for vCenter is sitting on the same machine, the SRM database is located on a computer that is running SQL 2012 R2 (on R2 Windows of 2012). There seems to be no problems connecting to the database. The Windows Firewall is disabled on all computers. Everything else works a treat, it's just the MRS service that keeps closing every 2 seconds or more.

    What have I done already?

    -SRM reinstalled, same thing still happens

    -A generated a new certificate, the same thing. Notice that I use the autogenerated, not the .p12 one cert

    -Check the connectivity between the different components

    -I'm using the DNS name of the vCenter, not it's IP address. At first I tried with the IP address (thinking that maybe the autogenerated cert used VirtualCenter IP), I had the same problem - then tried the DNS of the vCenter and still the same issue

    -The SRM service runs under a service account with the account be a local administrator on the computer and have permissions on the database. (follow-up installation doco on the word). 2012 SQL is supported.

    I've attached the last log to this question too. Can someone please advise on where I'm wrong? There seems to be a connectivity problem from what I see in the newspaper, there is delay in waiting for something to respond.

    Help is very appreciated. Thank you.

    Awright, I have reinstalled client vSphere and he is now good. Thank you for reading!

    FIX: Used SQL 2008 R2 Express instead of SQL 2012 R2. Maybe 2012 doesn't fully work yet with MRS. 5.5 or maybe I made a set-config somewhere, I don't know because I'm not a guy from the database. So yes, with SQL 2008 R2 - no problem!

    Now, back to the fun stuff - SRM learn!

    I tried specifying "localhost" and even the IP address instead of the hostname, but that has not worked. Any ideas?

    Thank you

    Dennis

    what output you get the command "hostname"? This is the FULL domain name or just the short name?

    Check the configuration of the client of VI - ESX

    Home-> Configuration-> DNS and routing-> the two mentions (name):

    and domain name :) must be completed.

    Check your host file and make sure that you can resolve the name of the server correctly
