How can I identify the name of the invisible file for a backup file successfully to an external hard drive USB2 separate?  I use Windows Vista backup program (Service Pack 2), and I need to do backups plus two from other computers on the same external hard drive.  To do this, I think I would need to identify each backup file separate I know which file to specify if I need to do a restore.

How can I accomplish this? Hi Malcolm,

If you use a drive logical sector of a size other than 512 bytes, Windows system image backup and restore operations can fail with 0x8078002A error code

  • Is it possible to work on projects iMovie on external hard drives in order to save disk space on my macbook (the internal hard drive has little space)?

    Hello!

I have a problem working with iMovie on my MacBook Air... Drive HARD internal of the MacBook is unfortunately to small for the biggest projects iMovie... Is there a way to work on external hard drives or perhaps TimeCapsule?

Thank you very much in advance!

Yes, put your iMovie library/ies on a fast (7200 RPM) external hard drive to the Apple format is a good way of working.  Details of the setting up of libraries are covered in the help files to:

    http://help.Apple.com/iMovie/Mac/10.1/#/mov3fa25bae7

Note that you may need to consolidate the media in an existing library before you travel to avoid breaking links to media located in the libraries from other Apple applications.  See:

    http://help.Apple.com/iMovie/Mac/10.1/#/mov882dee351

I would not recommend using Time Capsule - you would need a separate partition above the used by time machine, and you could put some data on the same drive as backup.  Connection speed can also be a problem.

  • Windows 7 backup and restore not recognizing external hard drives

My laptop recognizes the drives external hard and other storage devices and I can read and manually copy files, etc for them. But the backup and restore told me that nothing is connected when I try to run it. Also, when I connect the external hard drive to a USB port, the menu that is displayed does not include the option of backup of the device just connect. Is there a setting I need to change in the backup and restore program? Or is there another solution that everyone is aware of it please?

    Hi Sally,

Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

    I understand that the backup and restore does not recognize the external hard drive, but Windows doesn't. I'll be happy to help you with your query. Let me ask you;

    1. Is - this happy with all external hard drives or individual?
    2. What kind of backup are trying to create, auto or manual?
    3. You did it recently no specific changes in the computer?

There may be several reasons why backup & restore does not recognize the external hard drive. Let's check out the steps below.

Step 1: Connect the device to a USB (Universal Serial Bus) and a different test.

Step 2: You can check if the services responsible for the backup of restoration & work or not.

Volume Shadow Copy and backup of Windows service.

To check the services, you can follow the procedure.

    (a) click Start.

    (b) in the Search tab, type Services.msc , and then press Efriendship.

    (c) now in the services window, locate Windows Backup service and Volume Shadow Copy services. Check if they are started.

Note: Check the services separately, and then close the Services window.

Step 3: Run the next Fixit and check if the disc is recognized.

Click here to launch the Fixit.

Step 4: You can try to temporarily disable the security software of the computer and check with the question. Later, re-enable the security software.

See: , disable the anti-virus software

Important: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you need to disable temporarily to install other software, you must reactivate as soon as you are finished. If you are connected to the Internet or a network, while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attack.

Hope this information is useful. Please feel free to answer in the case where you are facing in the future other problems with Windows.

  • Trying to backup Outlook Express on an external hard drive, the process fails.

I tried to backup my Outlook Express. Following the instructions of Microsoft works fine - until I try to copy the backup to an external drive! The copy procedure goes haywire when you copy the local files. It gets stuck, then the rest of the time continued to increase (I stopped when he arrived at the 20 hours!)

If this backup will not help me, if I need to move my mail to another computer!

    Any suggestions?

Unless you find a new Vista somewhere, your new machine will be Windows 7 and who do not use Windows Mail, nor that come with an email program. Windows Live Mail is the 'replacement' for OE and WinMail, but I don't care for him, me and use Thunderbird. So that leaves you with a few different options.

One thing you could do is to download Windows Live Mail now and see if you like it. You can use the side of Windows Mail, make sure just that both have this game.

Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Advanced - Check: leave a copy of messages on the server.

In a program only, check to delete messages after X days to meet your space, you get your server, but still give yourself time to get messages in both programs. If you do this, then all you have to do is backup WLMail and transferring to the new machine.

And a surefire way to save only the messages and get them in almost any other mail client is as follows:

Create Windows folders in My Documents or elsewhere. One for each folder in WinMail. Open WinMail and in a folder, select all the messages (Ctrl + A) and drag them to the new folder of Windows. They will always be in WinMail, but these copies can be moved to folders in Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird and many other customer e-mail.

  • How to backup my bookmarks on an external hard drive?

Original title: hot to save my favorites on an external hard drive

probably one simple question to others, but I would like to save my favorites on my external hard drive. How do I do that?

Assuming you are asking about Favorites in Internet Explorer, the following comes from Internet Explorer Help (and then search for "Export Favorites").  It describes how to export your Favorites to a file:

Import or export favorites in Internet Explorer

Favorites, also known as bookmarks, are a convenient way to organize and find webpages that you visit frequently. If you use Internet Explorer on several computers, you can save your Favorites from one computer, and then import that list to another computer.

    To export favorites
Follow these steps on the computer on which you export your Favorites from.

    Click to open Internet Explorer.

Click the Favorites button, click the arrow next to the add to Favorites button, and then click Import and export.

In the import/export settings dialog box, click Export to a file, and then click Next.

Select the Favorites check box, and then click Next.

Select the folder that you want to export your Favorites to and then click Next.

By default, Internet Explorer creates a file called bookmark.htm in your Documents folder. If you want to use a name other than bookmark.htm file or store the Favorites exported in a different folder, specify the new file and the name of the folder.

Click Export. If you already have a file of the same name, Internet Explorer will ask you to replace it. If you want to replace the file, or click on no and enter a new file name, click Yes.

    Click Finish.

    Note
If the folder you select cannot be written, as the Documents of another user folder, the export will fail. Repeat the export with another folder.

    To import favorites
Follow these steps on the computer that you want to import your Favorites to.

    Click to open Internet Explorer.

Click the Favorites button, click the arrow next to the add to Favorites button, and then click Import and export.

In the import/export settings dialog box, click Import from a file, and then click Next.

Select the Favorites check box, and then click Next.

By default, Internet Explorer is important from a file called bookmark.htm in your Documents folder, but you can tell it to import favorites that are saved under another name. Click Browse and select a file, type a location and a file name to import, or click next to accept the default value.

Select the folder where you want to place the imported Favorites, and then click Import.

    Click Finish.

    Notes
To share or transfer Favorites from one computer to another, export or copy the Bookmark.htm file to a disk or flash drive. You can then import your favorites of the disc or the flash drive on the new computer.

Favorites from previous versions of Internet Explorer can be imported in this version.

To print your list of favorites, open Bookmark.htm in Internet Explorer and then click Print.

  • Email Backup on external hard drive

When I try to export my email on an external hard drive for backup purposes, I get a message "the message export has failed. Help?

What registry fix program? I reread the article and didn't see any registry fix program there.  The export procedure is quite simple.  At what point is there fault and what is the height or doesn't happen when it breaks down?  You get the error messages - if yes, what is the EXACT text?

BTW, this article contains instructions on how to backup everything (your settings as well as your e-mails) which will facilitate the recovery if it comes to that.  Maybe you would try instead this backup of ob miethod instead of article that I provided before was only for emails themselves. http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/62560-windows-mail-problems.html.

Anyway, please tell me what is wrong and where it goes wrong that I can see if I can find the cause.  It may be that you need to do the initial export on your hard drive and then move this folder on the external drive - I'm not sure (in which case it is where you are running problems).

I have lookk forward to your response.

  • Best way backup external hard drives?

    SYSTEM INFORMATION:

    HP Pavilion PU131AV / a1050y, Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.20 GHz, 2 GB RAM, Windows XP MCE, SP3 32-bit, Nvidia GeForce 6600

CURRENT BACKUP METHOD: I have three external hard drives (200 GB, 300GB, 750GB) all connected via USB.  I use the 750Go to back up the data on my 200 and 300 GB.  Currently, I manually copy all the files from the 750 GB smaller hard drives to save them.  It's very tedious because it takes about 5 hours to copy 200 GB of data.

QUESTION: I've never used the 'Backup Now' tool (right click on the drive / properties / tools / backup now) to back up external hard drives.  It would be a better option for me instead of manually copying files to a post of h/d to another?  Can I automate backups?  How can I retrieve the backup should I need the data backup?

  • Windows 7 Ultimate, backup on external hard drive

    Mr President.

can I save my hard drive (250 GB) on an external hard drive
    then format my HDD,
and then restore from an external hard drive?

Also my computer does not work since the external hard drive
without restoring the internal hard disk.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Hello

Welcome to the community Microsoft and thanks for posting the question. I'll certainly try and help you perform the backup.

Windows Backup backup all folders selected the first run and then it only backs up files that are new or have been modified since the last backup was made. Periodically, Windows creates a new, full of back up. Each full backup is called in a backup. When you view your backups of files, you can see all the backup periods with date ranges.

    Meet your respective questions:

    1. Yes, you can backup your data to the external hard drive (250 GB) disk hard.

    2. Yes, after taking the back upward, you can format your hard drive.

    3. Yes, the reinstallation of Windows 7, you can also restore the backup of data from the external hard drive.

    4. no, you will not be able to start the computer from the external hard drive (hard drive backup).

I suggest you follow the steps mentioned below in the Microsoft article:

In the meantime, I suspect strongly I have some viruses and spyware on my laptop and wanted to try a system reset. If I back up my files to an external hard drive will be I might transfer of virus/malware to my computer when I put files on my laptop?

    Hi Cbx_ladyarabica

    Please contact the Microsoft Community.

I like to show you a point for Microsoft Security Essentials. Want to know if there is a possibility of virus being transferred on the external hard drive and back, as well as files. It's pretty simple and I'm here to help you. Thank you for taking the time to read this far.

It is a possibility that the virus may be transferred along with the files provided that they are infected, as well. To be on the safe side, I'd like you try to run a full scan on the computer by using various third-party programs (such as suggested by Andre) to ensure that the computer is virus-free.

NOTE: The use of third-party software, including hardware drivers can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from starting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the use of third-party software can be solved. Software using third party is at your own risk.

I tried an external hard drive to backup to iCloud and although it does not copy in iCloud. It also eliminates the same amount of available space on the hard drive of my iMac.
