Is there a risk in opening a document in Framemaker unstructured structured?

I know that it is not a good idea to open a FrameMaker file structured in the interface of FrameMaker structured, and that there is a warning about it when you try.

What has come down to us, however is whether there is a problem with people who use structured FrameMaker interface to change the unstructured files.

We have a machine put in place for people who are not experts or highly qualified with FrameMaker and since we both structured and unstructured documents, the question is if to leave it set as the interface structured or unstructured interface. They are just small content changes in the majority of cases, nothing more involved that they ask me.

So:

If it is set to unstructured:

  • If they open an informal document, all right.

  • If they try to open a document structured, they will see the warning. I can tell them what to do if they see. (This may mean telling them to change structured, or simply to give me this file to be changed instead).

If it is set to structured:

  • If they open a structured document, no problem.
  • If they open an informal document however - is there a risk if they change it like that? Structured FrameMaker economy won't change anything on the file?

In the latter case, opening unstructured in the structured setting, there is no warning, it just opens with an empty structure view window, if they have not even open this window.

I have to imagine that Adobe has separated the two interfaces for a reason, but maybe it has more to do with all the resources such as menus XML and DITA in just do not need when you're in unstructured.

I realize that the real answer is not to let unskilled people with use of FrameMaker to edit documents, but it is the way things are at the moment. If it is set to be unstructured, they will have to pass in order to edit structured files, and then remember to don't forget to switch back. She put are structured somehow seems the best choice, but only if it will not damage the files not structured this way.

Thank you

The only danger is confusion in forced to navigate the workspace of additional structure elements.

Structured tools will be nothing with a doc unstructured.

I work this way all the time, and there is absolutely no reason you worry not about documents unstructured suddenly change or become unusable in unstructured Fm.

    Hello ErikAtkinson,

You can try saving the PDF file on your desktop before trying to open it.
See if that helps with corruption problems.

If this isn't the case, then I suggest that you post in the forums Adobe for Adobe Reader. I have included a link below:

  • There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and cannot be repaired.

    Greetings,

I searched the forums, and this mistake has been examined in the context of how to treat a damaged PDF file.

My question is a little different. The company that I am working has a tool to create what we call "knowledge base articles", i.e. product XML authoring with us help topics. They used this tool from 2008. Files can be attached to a topic. The XML files and attached PDF files is stored in a SQL database. Using the TOC Panel or the search function, relevant topics are retrieved.

When there is an attached PDF, users can view the PDF in the browser or download the file and open it locally.

The knowledge base has been moved from an environment of database SQL 2005 in Windows Server 2003 and IIS 6 for an environment database of SQL 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2008 R2, IIS 7.

Now that we have the following problem: in some subjects the downloaded PDF can't be opened and one error

"There is an error opening this document. The file is damaged and cannot be repaired. "is displayed. The curious is that some PDF files published this error, while others open without a problem. Source file all PDF files open without a hitch before they are downloaded.

Any advice or pointers would be very appreciated.

    TIA, Donna

    Donna,.

as you have probably read in a lot of discussions on this matter, this error message is usually correct, and the PDF file is damaged. As for how it gets damaged, it's something you need to know by poking around in your system. Here are a few general things that always apply when working with corrupt files:

The first thing I would do is open such a file corrupted in a text editor such as NotePad to see what it actually contains. Any valid PDF file must begin with '% PDF -' followed by a version number. If you don't see that in the first line, then you are not dealing with a PDF file and you know why you do not get the file saved in your knowledge base.

If this string is there, then you know that there a PDF file and the issue is somewhere in this file, and is where it gets much more complex. You will need a good understanding of the PDF specification to parse the file to see what is wrong with him.

If you're lucky, you'll actually have a file of length zero (which means also no PDF header). No valid PDF file cannot be zero bytes long. Your second chance case would you find in fact an HTML error in this file (instead of PDF content), that tells you the reason for the problem (but again, this depends on your system).

  • Adobe Acrobat - 'there was an error opening this document. The file is not found.

    Guys,

I have a virtual layer to Adobe Flash player, with a point of entry to Internet Explorer. Apart from that, we used Thinreg to associate pdf files with a Thinapp copy of the Adobe Acrobat Reader 7 (using the allusers switch). We find that, while trying to open online pdf files, Acrobat Reader load then shows the error "there was an error opening this document. The file is not found. If we save the file and open it works very well.

I am positive that it is a problem of isolation somewhere in the config layer of Acrobat Reader, but have not been able to track it down. It is probably that the Acorbat layer not looking outside of himself for the temporary internet folder that contains the pdf file that IE has cached?

Everyone falls on something similar and has a solution?

    Matt

Try to set the modes of insulation for your temporary folders (%temp%, % internet cache) merged to your package of IE. In addition, in our environment, we put % internet merged cache%/contents.is5. Not sure if it makes a difference.

  • There was an error opening this document. Access denied.

    Greetings,

When I did my taxes last year (March 2012), I downloaded PDFs of the IRS.  Form 1040 was an accessible file for writing, and I filled the need.  This file was saved on a Vista on XP machine.  A few months ago, I upgraded this pc for Windows 7 SP1.

Today, I'm about to do my taxes for this year.  When I double click on Form1040.pdf of last year, I get the following error message:

There was an error opening this document.  Access denied.

Interestingly, I can open other files pdf, as the form 1040 Instructions.  I don't think I have my Form1040.pdf password protected.  The reason I think that it is not password protected is because I'm not be prompted to enter a password.

I copied the file in an old detached machine XP (XP Home Edition, version 2002, SP3) I have and it opens fine.  He did not ask for a password.  I have printed copies of forms of year last of this XP machine, so this isn't an emergency for me, but it's slightly annoying that I can't understand what is wrong.

I have Adobe Reader XI version 11.0.2 installed on two machines (the Windows 7 machine and the old XP machine).

To sum up, it was created on Vista, I can't open it with Windows 7, but I can open it with XP.

Normally I would consider loading the file in question, but in this case, I hope you agree that maybe it's a bad idea!

Tips to make it work on Windows 7 would be appreciated.

Access denied means that there is a kind of permission issues.  Check the permissions for your user id in this file.

I don't think that player had a size limit?  The file is only a few hundred MB.

Does anyone have an idea what could be causing this error?

  • Problem opening of PDF files (there was an error opening this document. Access denied)

    Hi guys,.

I understand that I will need to go through all the post before posting anything (and I googled and searched as well) but I really tried everything, they suggested in the mail but nothing works. I tried to reinstall the program it downgrade from version XI to 9. But really nothing works. I can't copy and paste else the file, the file will be having this error message (access denied), but if I copy/paste, it has no problem at all. Does anyone have a solution for this?

Furthermore, I use Window XP Service Pack 3.

    Thank you.

Indeed, it is a strange thing!  The only difference between copy and paste and cut/paste is not the original file will remain or deleted in the original folder.  There will be no problem of permission using the two methods.

Depending on your file system, you should be able to see the permissions of files by right-clicking on it, properties, and then select the Security tab.  See also http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/acl_set_per missions.mspx

How do you open the file by double-clicking on it?  Is that what you can open the file if you open Adobe Reader first, open, and select this file?

  • Can I remove "zero-byte" & "there are no ready application to open the document...". » ?

    As above.

    (1) If a Cache shows "zero-byte" in the list of information, safely remove it?

    (2) in addition, safely remove it ESPECIALLY if it says "Apple" in the name?

    (3) and, if "there is no set application to open the document...". "etc, can I safely delete that also?

I will soon migrate to another mac and see no need to take things with what I don't need.  I won't delete the above, if I need.  As long as they do not have a hidden need to exist, so I don't have need of them.

To be honest, when I click on read the information, I see nothing that I understand anyway.

For 1 and 2 OK to delete it.

What do you mean for #3? Is this a real file? A zero-byte file?

What are the names of files?
