  We used PS CS5 Extended for 2011 and have it a license for 2 PC...  We recently bought CS6 to replace.  CS6 I installed on my PC, without uninstalling CS5.  After doing so, I registered CS6, thinking (and want to) the two would be available, so I could continue to use CS5 until I got all my plugins/actions/extensions installed in CS6.  Until about 2 hours ago I was able to use CS5 without problem.  I have closed the CS5, open CS6, so I could install an extension.  When I opened CS6, the dialog box allow editing to the PC user accounts has been posted.  I gave him.  But, CS6 never opened.  When I look in the Task Manager, it lists Adobe Photoshop Lite Portable, but that's all.  And now, when I tried to open CS5 once again, he gave me the 'trial' screen that invites for the license key.

I have now bought a decent PC, so I initially wanted to do a change of platform, but the office staff aide said that I could do only with CS6 so now I want to move to CS6 so I can perform the Swap of the platform.

  However, I would like to know, before elapse and buy the upgrade that will work... Is it important that I have the teacher version? I will be able to upgrade with it? If someone has been in the same situation? What do need me to upgrade?

  Commercial upgrades are the same. The gibberish of serial number will be set to purchase, including the platform switch.

  There are differences of 1 DOM version to another and they can and will break your script, if you have not designed to handle. For example:

  If you want to use script like me labels (because they are awesome) the following will break if you use CS5 or later:

  app.activeDocument.pageItems.item("myLabel").remove();
  

  So, you have to force the DOM to V6.0. But when you do so be sure to come back to the original version after you're done or you can create more problems. This can be done like this:

  app.scriptPreferences.version = 6.0; // CS4's DOM version
  app.activeDocument.pageItems.item("myLabel").remove();
  app.scriptPreferences.version = 10.2; // Current CC DOM version
  

  It is very annoying (for me at least), so I wrap functions that require DOM changes with a customized version changer to handle this for me. Regarding the list of incompatibilities?   Adding to what James said, this is true for Lightroom and Photoshop. In other words, do not necessarily install previous versions, but all by installing the latest versions, in this case 5 Lightroom and PS CS6, you key in series for previous versions as well with the current criteria.

  If it was me, and I couldn't afford to buy CS6, I would start looking to buy CS 5.5.

  The positives: you can get it for cheap because Adobe it sell any more, you wouldn't have a lot of money if you decide a newer version is required, it is software 64-bit (a big deal), it works well - particularly for the occasional user - and it has lots of nice features.  I use it myself at home.  Suits me very well.

  Disadvantages: it does not work on the latest Mac OS, her lack of features found in newer versions, Adobe is not update it any more and you could not open project files made in later versions.

  There may be some other pros & cons, but this isn't a blacklist for beginners.
