1. what application or antivirus security suite has been installed BEFORE you reinstalled Windows and your current subscription?
2. what application or anti-virus security suite is installed now and your current subscription? What anti-spyware (other than Defender) applications? What third-party firewall (if applicable)?
3. do you have a Norton or McAfee free trial come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (No matter if you have never used or activated).

Try this fixit: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058
Then restart (maybe twice) like reboot Vista.
If necessary, do a clean boot and try the update.
http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/929135
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7You can try also to rename C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution directory tracking temporary Windows Update as follows:
1. start an administrative command prompt.
2. run the following commands pressing on enter after each line:
Net stop wuauserv
CD %SystemRoot%\System32
Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
Net start wuauserv
3. try to reinstall updates
Important the following symptoms occur when you perform this operation:
Updates that are currently downloaded but which have not yet been installed must be downloaded again by using Windows Update or Microsoft Update.
When you remove the Software Distribution folder, your download history is deleted.
If you currently receive updates from Microsoft Update and Windows Update, you will need to reselect this option from the Windows Update Web site.
Note: If the problem is resolved and you can successfully download and install the updates, you can safely remove the SoftwareDistribution.old directory to recover disk space.
Once more, note it is important that you restart (even two) to make sure that everything is re-created correctly.

Hi, I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and I have downloaded the Service Pack 1 (KB976932) yesterday. I clicked on install, and it took an unusual 4 hours to reach the stage that restarts the computer. The computer started to shut down, and a message indicating a setup windows or something appeared. He went to 100%, and the computer restarts. When he went to the Windows 7 start swirly thing, it says the update operation bonnefin off about 273038 application... at that time, it was already about 1 in the morning, so I left to update, thinking that the computer went to sleep after all has been done. The next morning, after pressing the power on button, the screen remains empty even after clicking the mouse and keyboard by train. I had to force close it. Then, on the windows to shake, he said applied operations update, then error C0000034 application update operation 252 of 273038 (_0000...), then after a few seconds, fatal error C0000034 applying the update operation bonnefin... Ive tried to do a system restore before I installed SP1, but once completed, it is said he couldn't copy an original file, and the recovery has failed... any ideas on how to solve this problem? Thank you.
