"Last back up was cancelled because he couldn't finish" when you back up files to external hard drive.

Original title: backup of the files to the external drive process

I'm supposedly backup files for the first time on my drive external expansion. What is curious to me, is that whenever I try to backup my files, I did so more than once in the last days, I get a message that the last backup was cancelled because it couldn't finish. I checked the properties of the expansion drive and the disc itself has increased a large amount, so I know that there is something out there. But when I look at the contents of the disc, the only thing that indicates that there is nothing there's a folder name of the computer. I have files on the drive I installed manually. When I switch my pointer on the folder (name of my computer), it says that the folder is empty? Then when I open it there is a sub-folder called set back again several subfolders marked save the file with a date and a number. All these files are empty?

I thought when I backed up the files on my drive external, that they would be there on the screen and freely accessible, like the ones I put on manually? Would someone mind explaining the process to me... in layman's terms?

You can use a hard drive, but it is not the drive on which the system or the boot is running.  If you have a second drive in your system that contains system information or startup, you can use this disk for backups.  The wizard backs up (Start / Control Panel / backup and restore) will guide you through the process and provide you with the options you can choose to send the information - which should include this disc hard if it meets the requirements more fully covered in the following article.

I went in lightroom and can't find my photos. I lost the link before and did the right click to find and they have been found, but it's different.

I bought an external hard drive and copied some elements but did not cut their.  I did a back up on my external hard drive, but even once did not move them. I did the simple troubleshooting and it doesn't work.  I'm trying to find the original by right clicking the? on the folder LR and once I find the file it tells me that Lightroom has this file already in the catalog - and I want to merge. I tried one and it disappeared or moved. Help!

Use the file Explorer to see if the images are still in their original location. I suspect that move instead of copy them. This can happen if you drag you the.

I found that it is best to use either right click on a file or folder name and select copy then right click on the drive-destination folder and select Paste or use keyboard shortcuts to copy and paste folder and files from one disk to another. The keyboard shortcuts are the CTRL + key C to copy and Ctrl + V to paste in the selected destination folder-drive.

  • If I remove the permission to add back apps stored on external hard drive?

I'm selling my Mac. To help the sale, I wish I could say that it includes the iWork (Pages, Numbers, Keynote) applications that I bought when new and Aperture 3.  I ask because I don't mean a buyer they will have access to these applications, if this isn't the case. I live in a country where it is expected that when you buy a used computer, it will come with the applications already installed. These 'options', even if they won't use, contribute to the resale value.

I backed up everything to an external hard drive for x - fer to my next computer, including the applications mentioned. If I scratch out / reformat the hard drive and then the new owner create their own Apple to download Yosemite or El Capitan ID (I'm in Mavericks now) I was able to connect my external drive for Mac, and then copy the apps on his Applications folder so that he would be able to use? I care is no longer using opening myself, having switched to Lightroom and I know that if it is possible these applications would no longer under my ID and that he would not be able to upgrade, but since I've paid for them, I would be able to transmit with the Mac without having to use my Apple ID of the to do.

Unless you have records of installation for these applications, you can not legally include.

This applies also to any OS you downloaded from the app store.

In all cases, licenses for the operating system and applications downloaded on the app store are valid only for the Apple ID used to obtain them, and they are not transferable. If you leave these applications or the operating system, the buyer will not be able to update or reinstall the OS without your ID Apple and your password.

Thus, you will need to completely erase the hard drive and you can then reinstall the original OS, the computer came with.

  • I've just backed up with an external hard drive for the first time, but my profile with my folders for photos, documents, and movies are not there

    Hello

So, I finally got an external hard drive. I formatted for Mac (the device has been verified as being correct), and then he started to do a backup, which stated that a full backup would take 95GB. However, it only supported 19GB.  When I have my 'open' backup drive, I saw that only 'Macintosh HD' received support upward, not my user profile with all my folders containing documents, photos, movies, etc...

I'm quite confused, because I thought that it would save.  I plan on Snow Leopard update to El Capitan, but if something is wrong or I don't like, I'm afraid that I won't be able to restore all my personal files - but only the applications that are on my Macintosh HD.

Should I delete everything in my backup disk and try again?

This is an image of what's inside my external hard drive:

  • How will I know if my back up to an external hard drive worked?

    Hello

I completed a back up of my external catalogue of Elements12 of a hard drive but when I try to view them that they were recorded in all sorts of different ways. Some of them are from GOM media files that will not open at all.

Some say SYNCDB or CACHE or PREF files that tell me I need an application to open, others are for XML Documents that show only the lists of data. The list is long...

Open OK in program elements, but how can I know if or not he saved everything if I can't open or access these files that elements copied to my hard drive?

I'm completely lost. Before I had items that I simply copied my photo folder and video of my HDD ext and everything worked, not messages saying: this file needs an app or this video file could not be opened!

    Help

The most important thing to understand is that backups of the Organizer are not mere copies and they can only be used by the restoration of the Organizer function.

So, the simple answer is that you should see the message at the end of the process, stating that the backup was successful.

If you're skeptical, I fear that the only way to 100% is to do a restore and see if everything is ok.

One thing I always do (and recommend) is to see if you can find a file named "backup.tly". It is the last created and contains everything you need to restore your catalog and your image files, even if you choose to restore to an alternate location.

I'm completely lost. Before I had items that I simply copied my photo folder and video of my HDD ext and everything worked, not messages saying: this file needs an app or this video file could not be opened!

You can get a copy of your folders of photos, but this is not enough. You must also have a copy of your catalog records (location: menu help/information system). And if you are restoring to a different computer, which is not enough either: all your files will be shown as disconnected... good luck with the reconnection process. Believe me, use the backup/restore of Organizer system, at least when you want to migrate to another computer, disk or operating system!

Since we are never too sure about backups, a good solution is to use your preferred regularly copy or sync system AND to make the full organizing backups periodically or when you want to upgrade.

  • Do I need a specific external hard drive to back up an iMac or I can use?

I learn by an advisor to apple support I need to update the software on my mac. Before doing that I have to back up using an external hard drive. Can I use any external hard drive or do I need a specific which is compatible.

You can use the time Capsule's internal drive or one regular, but will probably have to reformat a disk that is not specifically intended for Macs. Except otherwise stated, Time Machine and other products that require that the backup drive be formatted as Mac OS extended will not be able to go back to a dedicated NAS.

  • How to restore a back up on top of an external hard drive

Hello.  I just got a new laptop from HP windows 8 and you want to restore a back up I took my old HP laptop on an external hard drive.  When I plug the hard drive, the ups return display in the file Explorer, but I can't find a way to restore the backup to the new laptop, the only option I can find is to know how to put in place to save on the hard drive and restore the files that I've just saved from the new laptop.  There is nothing really on the new computer laptop so it doesn't matter if I lose these (and they are now saved when even!), its mainly pictures and iTunes on the back up, a few old excel & word files I think.  When I click on Explorer the external hard drive in the file, there is a PC owner icon that shows a folder named Backup set & the date, he didn't save folders of files for various dates, in the most recent are the backup files 1 & backup files 2, from 2012.

How can I get these on the new laptop?  I can't take another back up as the old laptop crashed and lost everything, where the need to get this back up to the new computer.

    Help, please!  Thank you

    Hello Jacq,

Thank you for visiting Microsoft Community.

As described in the question, I understand that you are unable to find a way to restore your backup of the old computer stored on an external drive on your new computer windows 8.

In earlier versions of Windows (Windows 7, Vista), you can use Backup and Restore to back up your files or create and use a backup or image system repair disc. Windows 8 and 8.1 gives you choices on how you can recover your PC and backup your personal files.

You can use the file history to back up the files on your PC in Documents folders, music, photos, videos and office and the OneDrive available offline on your PC. First of all, you need set up a historical file player and turn on the history of the files. For more information, see set up a drive to the history file. If your original files are lost, damaged or deleted, you can restore them. You can also browse and restore different versions of your files. For more information, see to restore files or folders by using the history file.

As I was deleting some files from my hard drive, I came across some files that I couldn't remove with a message saying remove wite protection. Help!

This error indicates that an application is using this file at this point here. If you are unable to remove it, restart your computer and then try to delete it.

IF YOU ARE NOT SUCCESSFUL WITH THE above METHOD, THEN TRY to USE UNLOCKER, a free application that disables the application using the file that you want to delete.
    Download unlocker from here-http://www.filehippo.com/download_unlocker/
Click on the above link and click on download the newer version on the right side of the screen.
Download UNLOCKER from the link given above and install it. (you may need to restart the computer)
Right-click on the file you want to delete, and then click unlocker.
A new window opens showing all applications using this file.
Select all files, and then click on unblock.
Now right-click on the file you want to delete, and then click on remove.
YOUR FILE WILL BE DELETED SUCCESSFULLY.
If you are still unable to delete that file and unlocker shows no application, then follow these steps-
Right-click on the file you want to delete and click unlocker.
    A small window will appear.
In the drop-down list, choose delete, and then click ok.
Your file will be deleted on the next reboot of the system.
  • "My external hard drive does not appear in Windows Explorer and cannot open 'Help and Support', an error message" Windows cannot open help and Support because a system service is not ongoing.

    Original title:

Everything was fine until yesterday. Juice now, when I plugged the external HD into the USB port it does not appear in the 'my computer' window. It is recognized by the computer as it is present on the list of the "Disk Clean Up" and it also appears when I click on ' Safe Remove Hardware ' on the taskbar. But if she does not appear in the 'my computer' window I can't work with it or don't even know what it I have arquived in it.

Pops up a window saying that "Windows cannot open help and Support because a system service is not ongoing enforcement. " To resolve this problem, start the service named help and Support '. OK, I tried to open 'Help and Support' ' Start Menu ' and the same window appeared again to "not have a system service that runs". I don't know what her soul precisely and I have not the slightest idea of what I need to do to correct this 'disappearance' of Service 'system '. There is nothing without the appearance of HD in the window of thw work? Everything else works fine and the calculation is virus-free. What should I do?

    Hello

I had a scare last week and thought that my computer crashed.  In the end, everything was fine, but I decided I had to do a full backup of the system.  Bought 500 GB external hard drive.  Full backup of the system ran through the performance Wizard mode & maint.  When finished, he gave me a saying of the warning, something like "insert a diskette to run the system restore" something like that.  Does this mean that if I have a major failure which is on the external hard drive is null and avenue?  Floppy?  What is everything?
