Licensing, transfer of licenses

I have Windows 7 installed on a portable computer, the motherboard stopped working and because it is old, I'm replacing it with another that I have. Can I transfer windows 7 on my other laptop as the former, can not be repaired and the pc / details deleted from the license.

Hi Pete,.

If you bought Windows 7 from a retail source... not OEM (coming pre-installed on a PC), then the answer is YES.

The main limitations are mainly with versions delivered OEM pre-installed on a PC. They can ONLY be used on the PC it came with. When the PC dies, does the Windows license.

Commercial versions can be installed on ONE PC at a time as OEM. But if this PC dies and is laid to rest, you can reinstall to a new PC.

License Office is a little different, you can install a Home PC/desktop and a laptop.

I hope this helps.

  • Can I transfer my license key of Windows from an old PC to my Mac?

    Windows license question

My PC crashed. I bought a Mac. Can I transfer the Windows Lic. for my new MAC? I will also go to the virtual machine on the MAC so Windows should work. Just not sure how to notify MS, my PC crashed and I need to transfer?

If the copy of PC comes with Windows preinstalled, you can not.  Windows OEM copies that come preinstalled on a computer chip when the computer dies.  If you purchased your copy of Windows in a store, just go ahead and install it.

  • Hi, how can I transfer my license windows from the old to the new computer

I have a windows xp system recently that the hard drive has no operatre. If I bought a new system can I transfer license windows to my new system...

I'll be able to down load the updates...

It depends on the license.  If you have purchased a copy of Windows XP retail, then you should be able to transfer it to another machine.  If you have an OEM license, however, your license is married to your machine and it dies when your machine dies.  If you bought a brand such as Dell, HP or Toshiba computer, and it came with Windows XP installed, then it is likely an OEM license.

Note that the same install a retail version of Windows XP on a modern machine can not be easy.  The installation CD does not recognize a SATA hard drive, and to install a driver so that he will see the player will require that you have a floppy drive.  The alternative is to integrate driver into your installation disk.

If you plan to buy a new computer, I recommend you go with the new version of Windows that comes with it.

  • Can I transfer my OEM license on another computer and throwing away the old pc?

I have 2 old PC without any hardware in them with the product key OEM on top. I want to be legal even with not having not the money to keep buying more licenses just to stay legal. I transfer these keys on my computer principal in VMS (Virtual Machines) and used to test and evaluate and be legal or licensing die with these computers? If they do not die with these computers, just buy equipment for computers to bring back to life? I want that some virtual machines to evaluate/test/etc. Also, I believe I read that even installing the same licenses on computer 2 times (partitions) is illegal? How can this be good? If this is true, then, no wonder that Microsoft makes so much money and it goes so hacking on. I n my questions I've seen where to transfer the license to another PC and throw, stills activate, (stupid question) but making them legal with MS? : P

-Geek Windows - 7 is better that any OS I have and never HAVE!

A Windows OEM license cannot be transferred to another computer.  A virtual machine is considered to be a computer.  In addition, you can only install and activate one 1 copy of Windows on a single

  • License transfer Vista OS from the old to new PC

I have a retail version of Windows Vista. I installed it on a computer a few years ago, and since then, this computer now has Windows 7 installed on it. I want to install the operating system Windows Vista on a new computer, I'll buy. I assume that the license of Vista is always related to Windows 7 PC. How to get the Vista license transferred from the old PC to the new PC?

If you did a clean install of Windows 7 on the old computer, you can still use your Windows Vista on a new.

Trying to activate it online first.

If this does not work, use the phone activation. Just explain to the officer that you need to transfer your Windows Vista on a new computer.

  • Transfer license to a PC 'death '.

As for the other questions in this forum, I want to transfer a license from an existing to a new computer.  Installed Office Student/Home on my kids PC last year and my youngest daughter (who had the old PC) has finally bit the dust at the end of the school year.   I can't even start up, and given his age, I'm opting to replace.   How can I transfer the license from the PC now dead for the new laptop when it arrives?

    Thank you

If the old PC had an edition of Windows Vista retail, find the original installation of Windows Vista DVD and product key and install on the new computer.  However, if the license is an OEM license, it cannot be transferred to another PC. Carey Frisch

    I bought and downloaded online.

Also how can I find the Product Code I used?

    Thank you!

    Laughing out loud

A single license is a single Installation.

How many times can I install Windows on my computer before I have to activate Windows again?

You can reinstall Windows on the same computer as many times as you want because activation pairs product key of Windows with information about your computer hardware. If you make a significant hardware change, you might need to activateWindows once again

If Vista is preinstalled on your computer, or you purchased a download OEM license, it is classified as an OEM license and is not transferable.

The license of Vista OEM is related to the original computer it is installed on and dies with the computer.
You cannot transfer it to another computer/laptop

If a license of Vista at retail, you can transfer it to another computer/laptop.
But it can only be installed on one computer at a time.

A single license is a single Installation.

If the Windows 7 Home Premium is an OEM preinstalled license, the answer is no. OEM licenses are locked to the system on which they are preinstalled. If it is a license purchased in retail store, then Yes, you can transfer and update Windows Vista license and reactivate by phone:

    1) click Start and in the search for box type: slui.exe 4

    (2) press the ENTER"" key.

    (3) select your "country" in the list.

    (5) stay on the phone (do not select/press all options) and wait for a person to help you with the activation.

  • How can I transfer a license of Windows 7 on a new computer? Step by step please

Hey guys, I just build my first computer and I don't want to use the HARD drive from my old computer to the new. I was wondering if there is some way I can transfer my Windows 7 license from the old computer to my new computer? I would be grateful if someone could answer with step by step instructions. Thanks a bunch!

    Hello!

If you have an OEM of Windows license (which is pre-installed when you purchased your PC) on the old computer and want to use it on a new computer (PC with another motherboard), it is not possible.

If you have a retail license (if you bought separately):

1 note your product key: use a program like Nirsoft Produkey to get
     http://www.NirSoft.NET/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html
    2. on the old PC uninstall product key:
Start-> Accessories-> right click on command prompt and select "Run as Administrator"
slmgr.vbs /dlv---> to display the Activation ID for the installed version of Windows.
slmgr /upk ---> where is the extracted string in the message box that appears in the previous step
    3. on the new PC use this product key during installation or change it after installation
in the product key from the old computer with:
slmgr IPK , where is your product key.

  • With regard to the transfer of licenses: are OEM and identical repairman?

I recently hooked up a computer with Windows Vista for someone because my helmet damaged his PC in a way I'm not ready to repair. Can I transfer the license of Windows 7 from the old computer to replace?

Two of these computers come of refurbishers, each with the above mentioned versions from Windows preinstalled.

Unfortunately not, because the licensed repairer is dependent on the license of COA (Vista) supplied with the original computer.

Download the Licensing Guide for refurbished PC.
