Lightroom & external HDDx2

I am currently in Lightroom 64-bit 5.7. Lightroom is installed on my laptop and my catalog and images are on a single external HDD.  I filled the external drive and bought another one, I wonder what I need to remove the old drive or is it possible to connect the new drive as well as the old and access to the images of both of them?  They are both 3 TB WD mybook...  If I can run both what is the best way to implement?  New album, new catalogue?  I currently have all the images as a single catalogue.  TY everyone, take care.

Hi limeblu,

Greetings.

Yes, there is a way where you can use the new disk, but also old.

  • As you said they are the two 3 TB, so that you can now you can keep the new images in the new player you bought and then import these images of this new external drive into your LR, in this way, you will have access to two readers in your LR.

Or

  • You can create a new catalog in this new drive and use this catalog to import new images of your new external drive, but in this case, you will have access to two different catalogues and you will have to pass the catalogs in order to access the images on the old drive to new drive.

Hey everybody, after a recent update for Lightroom (latest version) Despite me saying the prefs I want to open this file in Photoshop CC 2014 he continually ignores this and opens the file in the 2015 version - the option is there in the export dialog, but he simply ignores my instructions. Is Adobe trying to discourage us to use the 2014 version now? I really hope not that I need to use the version of 2014 due to the problems of brush healing in 2015 - anyone else seeing this?

Definition of the 'old' version of Photoshop is also simple to add to the list "of additional external editors" in the preferences.

For Ironman - The default Photoshop will be CC2015.6.1 and the 'additional external editor"CC2015.1.2

(or default CC2015 and additional CC2014 in the case of Andy).

When setting up the 'additional external editor"it is important that you choose the appropriate version of 'old' app/exe program file.

When you right-click on a photo and click [Edit-In] you will have two lists for the PS, one for each version.

In the same way, you can create several 'additional external editors"that point all to ch, but with different options for the type of file and profile (for example PSD, TIFF, JPG, etc.)

  • New Version of Lightroom/external Hardrive

I used an external hard drive with version 2.7 that I now have 5.7 and when I connect the external hard drive that Lightroom detects the hard drive, but not the photos that are on it. Any suggestions on how to access it please

Your new laptop with LR 5 can not see the photos because they are not in the catalogue LR 5.  Your old laptop with LR 2 sees the photos because they are in the LR 2 catalog.  2 LR catalog is on your old laptop, not on the JEP!  If you want it to work, you must find the LR 2 catalog on your old computer, as many of us have already asked several times!

  • Lightroom CC - edition in the external editor with images located on the external hard drive problems

I have recently moved most of my image containing folders on external hard drive. In general, everything works smoothly in Lightroom (running latest CC). However, if I try to use an external editor of in Lightroom, I managed opening image in Photoshop CC if it is chosen. However, if I try to edit in a NIK Collection programs (i.e. Viveza 2) or affinity Photo I get error messages. The copy of Tiff is generated within lightroom, but at the spearhead of the external editor the following messages are met...

    • Viveza 2 - 'News file. Plist could not be opened"
    • Photo of affinity - "'could not open the file - / Volumes/4Tb iMac/2015-10-20-202036/Macintosh of the castle of my book 2 Backup/Backups.backupdb/Neil HD/Applications/Adobe Illustrator CS5/Plug-ins.localized/Photoshop Filters.localized/Unsharp Mask.aip/Contents/Resources/he.lproj/InfoPlist.strings the file type is not supported.". However, if I move the folders containing images of problem on my desktop (iMAC 27 2015) in Lightroom external editor command change... works very well. The images open with Nik Collection and Photo of affinity and save in Lightroom when save. Everyone knows about this problem? And if you have, is there a resolution?

    Any help/advice greatly appreciated.

Looks like I solved my problem with Lightroom. I disassembled my external backup drive, but upheld the disk external drive containing the photos up and then restarted my mac. After the reboot, I open Lightroom and chose the image on an external drive for mounting in affinity Photo and Collection of Nik. Both image successfully opened in editors. I reassembled the backup drive and rebooted time machine and repeated the same opening picture in external editors. Once again, works great. Have no idea where the original problem. Looks like a bad path was stored in a config somewhere file.

  • How can I change lightroom 5 previews smart on the book of mac pro (mbp) when lightroom master image files 5 are on my external hard drive is disconnected from the mbp

How can I change lightroom 5 previews smart on the book of mac pro (mbp) when lightroom master image files 5 are on my external hard drive is disconnected from the mbp? So far when I try to disconnect the external hard drive the mbp, I get the pop following window: "external hard drive A" disc could not be ejected because it uses 'Lightroom '. Exit this application and try out this disc again. When I do that and restart Lightroom 5, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom - screen select catalog appears, but does not list my external hard drive A as a choice.

I've been reviewing Adobe's Lightroom Help | Smart web page Previews Lightroom 5 and still have not been able to understand what I am doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

    HI Thomas,

Thank you very much for your suggestions! They finally gave me the direction I go solve the problems I had. Basically, the Mac Book Pro based Lightroom irdata files still had thumbnails. Once I removed the and redirected Lightroom external hard disk, smart previews of the external drive work when the player is well off the MBP. Much obliged.

I was wondering if you have any suggestions on how to backup all the files content and related data of Lightroom that exists on the external hard drive to another external hard drive as a backup? Ideally, it would be great if I could be able to launch security HD since the Mac Book Pro and do the work of Lightroom with the backup image files and intelligent previews correctly. Thanks again. Your help has been invaluable.

  • use lightroom 5.  photo editing and forgot to plug my external drive in lightroom.  connected drive and now only have a twirly Rainbow

im a newer user of lightroom 5 on MAC, but have learned quite quickly.

I've been editing a series of photos, and while it picks up today I forgot to plug my Lightroom external storage drive on my laptop.

So without thinking, I plugged the drive in my laptop, hoping that the drive appears and synchronization.

Right now, all I have is a twirly on-screen Rainbow.

    Don't know what to do.

Can I close Lightroom and save all my changes?

I have to unplug the drive and restart lightroom?

Thank you in advance for any help, this is the first time that I made this mistake

Even if no one answered, thanks for looking anyway.

Problem solved.  It seems that Finder on a MAC has been frozen / broken so he did not see the drive.

I uninstalled the external storage drive, created a folder on the desktop and exported all the pictures that I was working on since Lightroom where.

I closed Lightroom (and upgraded to 5.5), killed the Finder and restarted my laptop.

Inserted my external storage of Lightroom and it has been recognized, grew up in Lightroom and everything was fine.

  • Lightroom 6 and 13 items

I used 13 elements in my Lightroom 6 as a Publisher.  I signed up for the trial version of the creative cloud and now the only option I have is Photoshop.  Items disappeared, but my NIK and ON1 options are always available.  How can I return items in the tab "Edit in"?  Can I have the PS and the elements at the same time?  I like elements because it's familiar and easy for quick touch-ups.

    Hi Sam-AmPhoto,

You can add elements and Photoshop as an external editor in Lightroom.

Please see the following article for information on how to add an additional external editor: using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom | External editing preferences

  • Hi all. How can I manage the preferences that LR do not take up space on my MAC hard drive and works only on the external hard drive?

Hi all. I am new and on a free trial right now.

How can I manage the preferences that LR do not take up space on my MAC hard drive and works only on the external hard drive?

    Monthly payment included cloud storage?

Peut I manage backups? And how?

    -Amir

    Hi amireos,

Yes, you can create your workflow where you can keep all your images on the external hard drive and the Lightroom catalog file as well.

If you start with Lightroom and then use the Destination location as external hard drive when you import your image of the external source such as a camera or SD.

If you already have your Images on the Mac HD drive, then play all your Image on the external hard drive first and then import images directly from there.

Finally, you can change the location of the Lightroom Catalog as well.

Default location: folder on the Mac Drive HD, there is folder called Lightroom that you can move on the external drive too (however catalog Lightroom can't memory space as its only import previews of the images is not the real image and full)

Once you move the file catalog Lightroom external hard disk, then you need to browse the catalog file when you launch Lightroom only once.

See thread: LR catalog moving on external hard drive

Let us know if it helps.

  • Activation of Nik Collection in the form of plug in

I just downloaded and installed Google Nik Collection (free today!). During the installation it asked 11 elements and Lightroom 6 to be closed and indicated later that the software has been installed as plug-ins for these programs.  However, even if it has been installed for the elements, it does not appear as a plug-in for LR.  When I try to use the plugin Manager in LR, Nik programs are grayed out and cannot be loaded in the form of plug-ins.  Anyone know how to get the Collection of Nik added to LR?  I use an iMac with El Capitan (OSX 10.11.3) and 6.4 of LR.

It is not a plugin in Lightroom. You won't find him in the Plug-Ins in Lightroom.

It is configured as an external editor for Lightroom. You must use the command change in to access the Nik Software. See in Lightroom external editing Preferences

Anyone know how to point lightroom external photo directory?

    Hi ben2e,

Yes, if your computer is showing / reading the two locations of storage of your phone then LR should also.

    Suggest you to reinstall LR

And if possible also see another phone to make sure that it is not a problem with the phone.

  • Lightroom5 to Photoshop Elements

Some time ago I downloaded Lightoom 5 and 6 of Photoshop as a trial. As I decided to not have monthly financial commitments and chose to opt out of the cloud. Instead, I bought 5 Lightroom and Photoshop Elements. Unfortunately, when I want to open my image from Lightroom to Photoshop Lightroom attempts to go to the cloud. My second option to edit images in other software that I use for Portrait Professional. How can I change the first parameter fixed in Lightroom 5 to open images in Photoshop Elements? I tried the recommendations in one of your blogs, but has failed to change this setting. Please help me with this problem. Thank you

The default in Lightroom external editing action is always Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. I think it is determined during the installation of Lightroom. So if you do not have the full Photoshop installed more, only items, try to reinstall Lightroom and it should pick it up.

However, you can set external editors as much as you want - in Edit - preferences editor - edit external tab - additional external.

    Solved!

In Edit > Preferences > Presets, I had ticked the box "save presets with catalog". Unchecking this box restored the content of the menu "Edit In".

  • Vista Business 64 running Lightroom 2.0 cannot remove the FreeAgent Go USB external disk images

I use an external drive FreeAgent Go USB for image storage. I have a XP machine who has no problem using Adobe Lightroom 2.0 for the deletion of images in the reader.  When I use my laptop with Vista Business 64 and run the same scenario with Lightroom to remove images, I don't want to, I get an error that does not allow me to delete.  I can download them to the desktop from the laptop and I'll be able to delete them then, but not directly from the external hard drive.  Is there a way I can do this using my Vista based computer laptop, or what I always switch the drive to my XP to achieve?  Thanks for your help.

This error message only your getting EXACTLY (Word for Word)?  Have you checked the Vista Compatibility Center to make sure that Lightroom 2.0 and the FReeAgent Go USB drive are compatible with 64-bit Vista http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-vista/Search.aspx?type=Hardware&s=FreeAgnet%20Go&page=2.  I could find several FreeAgent Go drives (I'm not sure you have) and all I saw were compatible, but I couldn't find Lightroom 2.0 (so maybe that's the problem - simply because that isn't on the list doesn't mean it is not compatible - only that is has not been tested and that often means it can be a problem).

Have your tried using the standard Windows Explorer to erase the images of the player?  That work, or is it a problem there too?  If Windows Explorer cannot delete images, then try to use one of the following free products to remove the file/folder.  Unlocker to: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/Unlocker.shtml or file Assassin http://www.malwarebytes.org/fileassassin.php (with or without forcing the deletion: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/12/27/force-delete-cannot-delete-locked-or-in-used-files-or-folders-with-fileassassin/). These programs often work when normal functions remove Vista not work correctly.  I know you prefer to use Lifghtroom, but I am trying to determine if it is possible that the Vista computer delete files from the external HARD drive without using Lightroom to see if the problem is with Vista or Lightroom.

I hope this helps.  Let me know how it goes and what these error messages.

    Good luck!

  • Lightroom - Initial Drive Setup (work out of an external HARD drive)

I am very new to Adobe Lightroom; It caught my attention recently as an ideal method to keep all my huge photo libraries organized and in one place, easy to use and locate, as well as to give me great abilities to edit, export, etc. etc. I'm running the trial for now, just to play and I love the software. Before you begin to enter too and import my hundreds of GB of photos in the trial version, I thought I should wait until I bought the lot and maybe reformatted my MacBook to start with this new piece of equipment.

My question is: can I use Lightroom from an external hard drive with ease that is have all my hundreds of GB of photo files on the hard drive with file LR if it takes a lot of space, so whenever I use it, I plug the HDD external, if necessary. Another quick question, is the file than Lightroom use (recording, projects, previews, etc.) take up a lot of space, or would it be better to run my Lightroom off internal drive 120 GB of my MacBook and my photo on the outside files?

In addition, there are many differences between Lightroom 6 and the new CC with the monthly subscription version. I really hate the idea of paying every month forever, would much rather pay a single fee of £100.00.

The ultimate goal is to speed up my Mac and leave enough free space on drive HARD single internal of my MacBook, as well as presenting all my photos easily accessible for manipulation in one place (on my external 2 TB HDD).

All advice or recommendations for the initial setup of the directories before me forking out fresh 12:00 would be well appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    LS

I thought that I should wait until I bought the lot and maybe reformatted my MacBook to start with this new piece of equipment.

It's really up to you. I think that it is optional, there is no reason to wait until you have made the purchase, and similarly, there is not reason to reformat your MacBook pro just for the benefit of Lightroom (you can have other reasons that may require a reformat...)

My question is: can I use Lightroom from an external hard drive with ease that is have all my hundreds of GB of photo files on the hard drive with file LR if it takes a lot of space, so whenever I use it, I plug the HDD external, if necessary.

Yes, keep the pictures on the external HD won't put on the first internal, then move them later.

Another quick question, is the file than Lightroom use (recording, projects, previews, etc.) take up a lot of space, or would it be better to run my Lightroom off internal drive 120 GB of my MacBook and my photo on the outside files?

Lightroom Catalog and previews can occupy a large amount of the 120 GB internal disk, you can put them on an external drive as well, but there could be a drop in performance when you perform this operation.

In addition, there are many differences between Lightroom 6 and the new CC with the monthly subscription version. I really hate the idea of paying every month forever, would much rather pay a single fee of £100.00.

The remarkable differences (not a complete list)

    • LR CC comes with CC Photoshop and Lightroom for mobile; LR 6 doesn't have a CC of Photoshop or Lightroom Mobile.
    • LR CC has features that LR 6 does not work: dehaze, local black and white adjustments, border chain, vertical adjustments guided...
