Look at a RAW LUN attached to VM

I have several virtual machines that have RAW LUNS attached to them.  My

question: is it possible for me to view the LUNS are attached to what

VM?  I know that I can look at the settings of each computer virtual one at a time, but how can I can a

list?  I'm guessing a script?

You can get this information by using the following script: VMware v0.9.5 health check report

If you want to run something on the Service Console, take a look at a shell script called rdm.sh: repository of scripts vGhetto

  • How to backup VMs that have RAW LUNS attached with TSMserver v5.5 and TSMclient v6.1 in VCBproxy in a task (backup script)

    Hallo

I have several virtual machines that have RAW LUNS attached to them.

Question 1: Is there a way for me to use (free LAN) save those VMS with VCB + TSMserver 5.5 + TSMclient 6.1 - in mode (an automated task - script), which local VMDK disk backup is backup with FULL-level and fasteners LUN RAW to the VM backup files of the virtual machine level. Does the solution support?

Question 2: Is there a way in a task (separate in the 'pre' and 'post' script) as a single disc with vcb backup - for example when VM have a disk VMDK more attached, only a VMDK disk backup for is a primary partition on a virtual machine?

Note: Backup free LAN for backup of the VCB proxy any type (level FULL or FILE) is correctly and fully functional.

If the RAW format is really a ROW then you can do a virtual RDM and Yes, VCB will save help file or full. If she is not a ROW but a RAW, then only the VMDK can be saved via VCB.

Question 2: Is there a way in a task (separate in the 'pre' and 'post' script) as a single disc with vcb backup - for example when VM have a disk VMDK more attached, only a VMDK disk backup for is a primary partition on a virtual machine?

Not only a single disc that I saw that it's all or nothing. If you don't want to VCB to backup a drive, you can mark it independent or if it's a RDM make non-virtual.

  • Attached data recovery problem size Raw LUN

We have a problem with our unit of recovery to Date.

We have a matrix of about 12 TB discs intended to save our VMs.

So, I try to join VM recovery given as a raw LUN.

I saw 10.9 TB plug in recovery. try to format... it seemed to me that it works.
But when I ride it, it was presented as a 2 TB drive.

    Umount - 10.9 Tb
    Mont - 2 TB

The next step... I have connected to the computer of data recovery (I mean it's just a CentOS behind). And try to make a hand partion using parted and mkfs.

parted worked well (with TPG as the label).
    So I launched
    mkfs.ext3/dev/sdb1

It took a lot of time, went up to
"Writing Superblocks and filesystem accounting information.
and it seems that it crashes.

mkfs still present in the process, but it seems that it do nothing.

It's probably a problem with the ext3 file system.
    But
    (a) it seems I might have an ext3 file system larger than 2 TB.
    (b) ext4 is not available on CentOS of data recovery... so what could I do?

So... maybe someone has a tip for this problem?

    Thank you very much.

P.S.: Just for the record, we have 3 ESXi5 host with vCenter 5.

I'm not 100% sure why you see the wrong size RDM, but make sure you read the Administrators Guide.

    of http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-50/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vmware-data-recovery-administrators-guide-20.pdf

Data recovery is designed to support deduplication stores that are up to one terabyte of size and each appliance backup is limited to the use of two stores of deduplication. Data recovery imposes no limits on the size of the stores of deduplication, but if the size of a store exceeds a terabyte, performance may be affected. While data recovery imposes no limits on deduplication store size, other factors limit the actions of deduplication. So, the stores of deduplication are limited to:
-500 GB on CIFS network shares
    -1 to VMDK and RDM

  • Move a virtual machine that has a raw lun mapped to SAN

    Dear all,

I need expert advice for this case. I have a virtual machine on a host with esxi 4.0, but due to many machines same virtual host we are experiencing memory problems and have decided to move this virtual machine to another host with less VM and less use of resources.

I plan 1 HR time to perform this task, this virtual machine have two drives one windows partition and the second 20 GB as mapped lun on SAN. So when you move it to another host, what I'll do is tap to stop the virtual machine, go to another host and storage switch to VM folder and add the VM.vmx file to add it to the inventory of the new host. What about the case of raw LUN mapped, how to take care of it.

Please advise, it is little urgent.

    Thank you

I guess there is no vCenter at stake here and you have no option for vMotion? The RDM, I would like to stop the virtual machine, detach the RDM LUN, migrating the virtual machine and re - attach the RDM.  As long as the two hosts can see SAN/RDM, you should be good with that.

  • Try to use mapped raw LUNs to the new drive, but it is grayed out.

I have a volume set up on my SAN for my host Dataserver and when I look at the configuration for the storage card from the host (iSCSI adapter SW) it lists the unit, so I know that he can see it.

The problem is when I go to the Dataserver VM and try to add a new hard drive, it won't let me select "maps Raw Lun. I missed a step in the development of this device?

To ensure that this RDM file is pointing to the correct LUN, run:

    vmkfstools q - /vmfs/volumes/.../DATASERVER_VM1_4.vmdk

Usually you would remove a RDM disk by selecting "remove disc" when you remove it from the virtual machine (this removes only files hard and not the data on the LUN itself). However, it should work just delete the two files - the vocation and the associated descriptor file - browser data store. The data browser store will only show the name of the desctiptor file.

If you can afford a few outages, power off the virtual computer, re - join the mapping file and then remove it by selecting meanings reported "remove disc"

PS: No host reboot is required for this action.

  • How to find the virtual machine connected to a partical card RAW LUN.

    Hello

I love RAW map of LUN that I connected to several virtual machines on different hosts.

Its been a very long time. Now, I don't remember which VM is connected to the LUN of my RAW card.

I have a lot number of VM on each HOST so that it will take enormous time to search manually.

Is anyway find VM connected to my RAW LUN map.

    Thanks in advance,

  • How to get "Display Name" of RAW LUN with PowerCLI

    Hello

    I have a question:

We have several RAW LUN and I changed the name to display in vCenter.

How can I get all the changes in output in a CSV with PowerCLI?

    Thank you very much

    Try like this

    $esxName = "MyEsx."

    Get-VMHost-name $esxName | Get-ScsiLun - LunType disc |

    Select @{N = "DisplayName"; E={$_. ExtensionData.DisplayName}}, CanonicalName, RuntimeName

  • Added raw lun mapped as a new hard drive, but VM does not see it.

ESX 4.0 with two Windows Server 2008 virtual computer running.

Created with SAN volumes and put at the disposal of the ESX host.

I went in with my client vSphere virtual machine settings and added a new hard drive > mapped raw lun, stored with VM, physical and everything seems to set up correctly after hitting good. I also increased the size of the other two disks on this virtual machine. I rebooted the VM and connected to the server to find that he does not see the new drive, or he does not see the new size increases for other readers. I rebooted the host and yet, nothing new.

What have I done wrong? Why these changes are not recognized by the virtual machine?

After the increase in the size of disk or adding new disks, you must go the the VM Windows disk management and resize or format/partition/boot disks.

  • Cannot add raw lun if the host is connected to vCenter

I have MS cluster disks in HP EVA4400. They are presented to my guests. If I self host then I can add raw disks in VM but if I add host to vCenter then the lun of the bullies appear no more.

Probably, if I anyone these LUNS and present with different lun ID then they would appear but can't bring those LUNS offline.

Anyone have idea where I should start to investigate?

I think that what you see is the expected behavior.

In a cluster environment, you can add a unit logic as a ROW only one number. While adding, a mapping file raw device called (vmdk file) is created. On the other node MSCS, you must connect to this mapping file (via Add existing virtual disk) rather than create another ROW.

Access to the RAW LUN through multiple files for mapping (if you manage to somehow create them) could cause problems with locking and possible data corruption.

  • vs VMFS mapped performance raw lun

Here are two tests that I ran inside a virtual machine.  One is on the OS disc that is in a regular VMFS data store, the other is to a raw lun mapped.  Both are fixed on the same back-end (Equallogic iSCSI) storage connected via MPIO 1 Gbit/s.  Should I see this kind of difference and 37 MB/s OK?

    # dd if = / dev/zero bs = 9000 count = 100000 = test & & rm-f test

    100000 + 0 records in

    100000 + 0 records out

    900000000 bytes (900 MB) copied, 8,83205 seconds, 102 Mbps

    # dd if = / dev/zero bs = 9000 count = 100000 = test & & rm-f test

    100000 + 0 records in

    100000 + 0 records out

    900000000 bytes (900 MB) copied, 23,9424 seconds, 37.6 Mbps

    > I can't imagine which translates into the difference between RDM and VMFS

Difference between RDM and VMFS is negligible. The significant performance of vmdk less - reset default records (due to security problems).

  • Storage VMotion for a virtual machine with SAN LUNS attached to it. They are all going to?

    Hello

Don't know which section of this post, so sorry if its wrong.

We are eager to Storage VMotion of our SQL VM. These are our SAN 3040 of NetApp. In the virtual machine (windows 2003), they have also connected to the network SAN NetApp 3040 LUN.

What I need to know is, if we tried to do the other (NetApp 3170) SAN Storage VMotion problems due to the fact that its storage not only fast vMotioning of VMs its self, but also the LUN or LUNS will remain on 3040, and the virtual machines moved to the 3170?

    Who is?

If more info should help just shout!

    Cheers in advance...

    RDM's Raw card device.

As I posted earlier, you need to move data to the Raw LUN for LUN Raw new either through data copy inside the VM if you map the new LUNS brutes who him or copy.

  • device mapping raw lun change possible virtual mode?

Hello, I have a small question...

is it possible to change the raw lun mapping in physical mode in virtual mode without losing any files?

could you show me the right way...

    This way is possible?

    1. stop virtual machine

    2. change the settings

    3. open the raw device

    4 settings

    5. change in virtual.

    Thank you very much

Well, we are the problem with a virtual machine, that removed storage administrator the RDM physical mode for other purpose of maintenance, but after adding the RDM, its not are no longer available for the physical mode but only use virtual mode right now.  Yes, from the physical to the virtual mode does not remove your data is safe, and I still can't change back to physics for certain reasons.

  • In any case to the RAW LUN with VCB support?

    Hi all

I know that when you have a unit number logic RAW mapping for a virtual disk that you can take snapshots in ESX or take the snap shots with VCB however is anyway to take a level backup image to a virtual machine that has a RAW LUN with VCB mapping?

    Hello

If you convert the RAW LUN to a virtual RDM then yes VCB would work, but only for Virtual RDMs in addition to standard VMDK.
