If I import something in iTunes 12.3 from an external HARD drive, as soon as I turn off the computer, or remove the external hard drive, he'll never find the files again, even if the drive designation is the same. Why? How can I prevent this?

Whenever I then tr to import something on my iPod, the program does not give me a warning that the files not found, instead, I drag-and - drop folders on the iPod, and the interrupted icon flashes 3 times, as it does when the transfer normally woks. If I look carefully on the row of the SECOND high, and no level of "work in progress" does not appear behind the file in the background, indicating that a transfer is in progress, then nothing happens, and no files are transferred. Then I noticed once I walk around with the camera. Given that I don't want to wait half a day for my library do a new import every time I turn on the new PC, I just use the old memory of the files, select what I want, then re - import only this folder on top the already existing folder. If I do that several times, I can finish with several times the files in the folder, all but the last loaded then have the exclamation make indicating that the file has been lost. This can last indefinitely (e.g. 20 identical files with the explanation marks and the other without if I imported the record 21 times). Of course, only the last import is transferred to the device.

It's not quite like that. If iTunes starts up and has reason to notice that a drive where other titles are supposed to be stored is offline, then it flags those followed with the exclamation point. If subsequently put you at the disposal of the player and import the same tracks it will make fresh entries in the library for them. If you close iTunes and then reopen it, you should find that the two entries of work. The perfect way to work with iTunes is for her to have a content library internal computer discs auto if there is room, or on an external drive connected normally. and in both cases keep a backup on a separate disk. See make a split cell library for more details

As stated in your feed to repress 'fake' lost files transfer when iTunes is unable to do what he is asked he often fails silently. The answer is to keep your library organized correctly there is no broken links and not duplicates.

When iTunes has multiple entries for the same file there is only one of them on the device. Broken entries are not copied over. It seems that you manually manage the device that takes the most effort than syncing playlists selected from a well-trained library.

Duplicates in iTunes are usually the result of re-import content located outside the media folder where your settings allow for the songs imported to copy in the media folder. iTunes is not keep a record of the external paths, so if you add the same record twice, you get two copies. If you start iTunes with the media on an external drive disconnected, then plug in the hard drive and then add files to iTunes iTunes can contain multiple references to the same files. If the reader has several times different drive letters, or you manually move media autour, then this can lead to broken links.

Official notice of Apple on the duplicates is here: find and remove duplicates in your iTunes library. This is a manual process and article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as the lost coast and membership of playlist, or sometimes the same file can be represented by multiple entries in the library as well as a removal and recycling the file will break all the others.

Use MAJ > view > show items to reproduce exactly to display the duplicates because it is normally a selection more useful. You must manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sort the list by Date added can make easier select appropriate tracks, but it works better when executed immediately after the dupes were created.  If you have several entries in iTunes connected to a same file on the disk hard then don't not send to trash.

Use my DeDuper script (Windows only) If you are not sure, do not want to do it by hand, or want to maintain ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this background thread , this post for detailed instructions and Please take note of the warning to back up your library before deduping.

(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to temporarily view or CTRL + B to keep displayed.)

The latest version of the script can put away the dead links as long as there is at least a double live to merge his stats and membership of the playlist and must deal wisely when the same file has been added through multiple paths.

You can also take a look at my comments in this thread Re: why iTunes double, triple or even quadruple songs I import there? and hhgttg27 for some more information on the Organization of the library and the effects of the different options in iTunes.

    2. what happens when you try to start the computer?

You must have the DVD drive to start the computer using the disk, you cannot use the external hard drive to do the same thing.

Also I suggest you to make sure you have defined the start as CD/DVD-Rom as the first choice option in the BIOS. See below the help link-

  • How to change the letter on the external HARD disk

My drive external hard was originally on drive F, and with that, I got all my music iTunes also. However, for some reason, my computer stopped recognizing the F drive; the following message appears when you try to open this drive:

"The drive or network connection that designates the shortcut 'F Drive.ink' is not available. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available and then try again. »

The problem I have now is that the external hard drive is now the G disk and iTunes does not recognize the path (G:\iTunes), I say to use, for example, my music is not loading properly and that a fraction is playable.

Can someone help me with this?

    Hello

I would recommend to change the external drive (g) to F letter.
Do you know how to do this?

After the external HARD disk is connected, you need to access the disk management and you will see the HARD drive (unique partitions) and other readers.
Then you must mark the external HARD disk and should change the letter F.

Perhaps the letter F was reserved for another drive.
In this case, you need to unlock the letter F by assigning another letter to the reader that uses the letter F.

  • Photos can work using just an external HARD disk and leave my only intern?

    (2) when I import pictures from my camera in the future, that the Mac them automatically in the folder of photos on the external HARD disk and not keep fill the space limited on my Mac small disk internal.

Is this possible? I remember that I was able to do it with iTunes years when I used a Powermac with 4 x internal HDD of various sizes. iTunes has been able to see the music on each disk files and present them to me as a single list of iTunes.

I'm not interested in using iCloud at all, I have everything on HARD drive and memory sticks and I am satisfied that, as it provides all the storage I need and I only use a computer for my work.

    Hello

    I have a laptop that has a built-in drive HARD Toshiba MK6021GAS.
I found the disk too slow, so I bought a Hitachi travelstar 7200 RPM to replace. That worked without problem.

The thing is the usb box works perfectly well with all the other readers, I tested (consuming more than my Toshiba) and the HARD drive works fine if I put it inside my laptop again. I tried to Master and selection of cable, same error.

  • Change the password on external hard drive

    Hi all

on my iMac 21.5 ", I recently updated my Mac HD internal to El Capitan 10.11.  There are now several major programs (for example MPEG Streamclip and Photoshop elements 11) which worked fine under Yosemite, but are not compatible with El Capitan.

On an external hard drive, I installed Yosemite 10.10.2 in late 2014 when it was the last version of OS X.  Only, I installed a system on the usual external drive boot on the internal HD failure.  All of these programs (also installed on the external hard drive) work very well in Yosemite.

When I start on the hard disc to access these programs, I had problems when I need to make changes for which the system requires a user and a password.  I don't remember what they were.  Is it possible to change the password (given that I can identify the user name in the "Users" folder), please?

    Best regards, paulranger1.

Please open the Startup disk preferences window and select the volume on the external hard disk. You must change this selection on the internal drive after the reset of the password.

Start in recovery mode. When OS X Utilities window, select

    Utilities ▹ Terminal

in the menu bar at the top of the screen, not one of the items in the OS X Utilities window.

In the window that opens, type this:

    resetp

Press the tab key. The partial order you entered will automatically end this:

    resetpassword

Press return. Opens a window to reset the password. Close the Terminal window to get him out of the way.

Select the boot volume ("Macintosh HD", unless you have given it a different name) if not already selected. You won't be able to do this if FileVault is turned on.

Select your username in the menu option allows you to select the account if not already selected.

Follow the prompts to reset the password. It is safer to choose a password that includes only the characters a - z, A - Z and 0-9.

    Select

    ▹ Restart 

    in the menu bar.

You should now be able to login with the new password, but will reset the keychain (empty). If you have forgotten the password for the keychain (which is normally the same as the password for the connection), there is no way to recover it.

  • [S1670CDS] "Cards bootable component snap": on an external hard disk

    Hello

This time, I would like to make this Satellite 1670 CDS booting from an external USB hard drive.

The BIOS setting "bootable add-in cards ' in the section 'Boot' seem to indicate that it is possible to boot to PCI devices.

Then, I want to buy a PCI USB 2.0 controller to do.
The motherboard is USB 1.0, so I don't know if a USB 2.0 controller is working, or if it will limit the possibilities in USB 1.0.

It is quite disturbing: I don't remember if there is any free PCI slots inside the laptop, and even if there is, there is no place to put the USB ports accessible from the outside (sorry I have no words to say Hmm).
But I'm ready to cut the plastic of the laptop box to create a space where the USB ports may be accessible.

One of the purposes of the present is backup data on another drive, if drive crash HARD to my laptop inside.

Finally, do you have someone has it already done this sort of thing?
Do you really think that this is possible?

Let me know ;) I have the saw to the left hand!

Sorry, that I have to disappoint you!

A PCI card is only for desktop computers, it does not fit into the laptop!

You can buy a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card to connect the HARD disk, but you cannot start it!

You wrote that your drive HARD internal fails, the only way to run Notepad is to change the internal HARD disk and install an operating system on it!

In my opinion is the best to change the internal HARD drive (a little is available on ebay), install the OS and more HARD disk space, you can use an external USB HDD!

If you want to read and write on this HARD drive you must format format HFS or HFS + MAC compatible.
But on this path you will erase all the files.
