  You cannot use the external drive as primary drive as the operating system files will be present on the internal drive.

  If the internal drive is full you can always use the external drive to install programs on the computer by pointing the disk as the location when you install the program and make sure that you do not disconnect the external hard drive if you have installed the programs on it.

  I would first go in "Device Manager" and check that there is not a question mark with "unknown device" beside him. If this is the case, highlight it and delete it, unplug your HARD drive and restart your computer. Check the Device Manager again, you will need to repeat the process without the connected HARD drive. Then follow the instructions of the manufacturer install the driver.
