  I'm looking for help with my iMac. A week ago the display began showing scattered pixels and it froze when switching between desktops. At this point, I restarted and the screen came with vertical lines, made of strips of color slightly different at intervals across the screen. There are five of these lines. The internet says I should boot from my installation discs, which of course, I have more.

  I fear that the cost will be too prohibitive to repair and so far, each local repair company I called said that they repair the vintage iMacs.

  Any advice?

  Follow these steps and check if persists it to the question.
   
  Step 1:
   
  Problem could be related to infection of virus/malware or spyware. I wish that you run a full scan using your security software in order to remove the malicious software.
   
  Step 2:
   
  I would have you done SFC scan on your machine to determine if the problem related to the corruption of the system files.
   
  Step 3:
   
  If the steps above do not work, I suspect involvement of conflict of software of third party causing the problem to occur. I would like you to put your computer in a clean boot State. Clean boot helps eliminate conflicts of third party software.
   
  Note: Follow step 7 to your computer as usual.
   
  Step 4:
   
  If none of these suggestions/steps help, do a System Restore to the point (Week) where the computer was working normally.

  I posted this already in another view about a similar BIOS problem.

  To me, it seems that something was wrong during the process of updating the BIOS, and if you're lucky, the flashing of the ROM BIOS might help you.

  As far as I know that you would need a BIOS version of special rescue and the drive to reflash the module ROM that you do not and therefore, you will need to contact the ASP in your country for assistance.

  This isn't a real solution that you expect, but it s an advice how to get a solution
